I know there are a handful of national #1 and world champs here, which is way cool.

For the rest of us that raced, what it the best national ranking you ever had when you raced and what class?

As an amateur, I was in the 20-40 range in 14-16 expert and cruiser. I turned B-Pro and Pro Cruiser and got to as high as 5 in pro cruiser points, eventhough it was May. I ended up going away to college that summer after a separated shoulder and never actually earned the plate.

What is everyone else's National story?
Randy
Never raced enough Nationals in one year to rank if I recall but I was ranked 100 something-or-other in the 1983 ABA Pro standings, 96 buckaroos I think....can anyone look it up?
John Piant
Here is one in the middle. Even with some great amateur results (81,82). My best Pro ranking was NBL #11. Backed up with NBL #12.
Bryan_Esser
BITD:
NBL National Number 15 / 15 and over '78
NBL National Number 9 / 16 and over '79
NBL National Number 4 / A Pro '80
NBL National High Point Champion / A Pro '80
NBL National Number 17 / A Pro '81
(I think the years are correct!)

Didn't race enough NBA, NPSA, to earn any national numbers. My NBA number however for 1979 was 53F and for 1980 was 75F. When we did race NPSA races they made us run goofy numbers like 135 and 229 (two that I remember). I never raced a single ABA race throughout my career.
Cash Matthews
During the NBA days, one ranking system was the BMX News Top 25. I made that in 1976. Stu was recognized as the #1 rider and there were 24 others like myself who had accolades, but nothing to match Stu. I don't recall if they were doing actual national numbers then, or if that started in 77 with Breithaupts National # 1.

The BMX News Top 25, while very gratifying, was very skewed. It made sure to list people from each region leaving off way too many SoCal guys. Matt and Ruminer and I made the top 25 thingy while David Clinton was listed as honorable mention! I fully recognize my spot in bmx. Guys like Stu and DC were truly the rulers of the Golden Era of BMX. It was a cool thing to be part of.
Brad Dalbec
I only raced 3 full seasons until an injury in '84 sidelined me for good as a 16x.

I had WWBA #6 in '81.
NBL #13 in 13 Cruiser in '82.
NBL #14 in 14-15 Cruiser in '83.

I never really tracked my points, I just concentrated on making mains. If I would have, I'm sure I would have gone for better results in my motos and would have been inside the top 10. I won a few mains, so no regrets.

Here are some of my racing videos from '82-'83.

My best was #4 in Cruiser. That year going into the Grands Richie Anderson, Jarrett Justice, me and someone else(sorry can't remember his name) were w/in a few points of each othergoing into the Grands. Unfortunalty, after getting perfect motos 1-1-1, I got crashed (got bumped after the line and handlebar hooked fence and threw me on the ground) in the semi AFTER the finish line and broke my collarbone. I spent my main event in the hospital and ended up #4. I think I got #8 that year on 20". I got #12 one year too. CAn't remember the years though.

NZ No.5 in Pro Cruiser for 1984-85. I had lost interested in 20" bikes by then
Mark 'Gonzo' Summers
I finished national ABA pro at #31 back in 1980. That was back when one dollar = one point, and AA Pros and A pros were all lumped together. I also finished NAG 15 in ABA 31-35 Cruiser one year in the late-eighties.
Mike Kiniyalocts
Let's see (Years might be a bit off:)

Never raced ABA - Southern Ohio was primarily NBL back in the day

NBL #7 1985
NBL #4 1986
NBL #4 1987 Also got 2nd at the IBMXF Worlds in the Superclass (This was the only year I raced a few cruiser races and ended up #16)

My brother Tom was NBL #1 in 1986
My dad was #2 in 35-40 cruiser 1987 as well
Bryan_Esser

I totally remember the names Mike Kiniyalocts, Chris Kennedy & the others that we always battled... Tatton, Cullinan, Carter, Milwee, Foster, LaBerge, Riblet, Dean, Callihan, Lierley, Breverman, Hadan, Butler & the list goes on of very fast dudes... Fast Class!

Numerous #1 State NBL & ABA Plates...

Mike Kiniyalocts ,

Not sure if you'd remember me as I think you were a year older, but we did race together countless times in OH and at nationals. We traveled with Billy Au's family. My name is Chris Cline.
Chris C.
Bryan Esser - did you have a brother or relative named Kurt? I found some pics of me and Kurt Esser was in one of them, I believe riding for Thruster?

Hi Mike-

I'm not in the same league as those mentioned above but my last year I raced the CABA (Canadian arm of the ABA) I made the top 50 in Canada for points overall-ranked #14 in Ontario.

Mike K. - good to see you on the site. Tell your brother I said hello.

1981 - NBL #3 9x (Jensen #1, Jason Kick #2)
1982 - NBL #2 10x (Jensen #1)
1983 - NBL #7 12x (Leon Williams #1)
1984 - NBL #1 13x; #4 13 Cruiser
1985 - NBL #1 14x; #1 14 Cruiser
1986 - NBL #1 15x; #2 15 Cruiser ('Ultimate Sin' above was #1)

Notice how I got 2 years older between 1982 and 1983... the NBL changed the way they judged your age from race your age 'as of Jan 1' in 1982 to race your age 'as of the day of race' in 1983.

I came so close to winning the the NBL #1 in 1982 and 1983. In 1982, I finished 5 points back of JJ (which was one spot in the main)... I won the main, he finished second and won the plate. In 1983, all I had to do was win my three motos and make the main. I fell in the first moto, then fell in the semi and did not make the main. DANG IT!!!

Good memories indeed.

Hello all!

I am an occasional lurker here. It is incredible to see some of my BMX heros posting.

Chris Cline, I definately remember you. How is everyhing? Have you seen or heard anything about Billy lately? He was always a great guy and an awsome racer. For a few years in the late 80's, we could show up at a local race (remember Hilliard Indoor in Columbus?) and have 3 or 4 guys in our class who were nationally ranked in the top 10...

Crehan - YOU ROCK!

Bird - I will tell the family that you said hello. Aren't you in the Cincinnati area? I work downtown Cincy for a local law firm.
Bryan_Esser
Chris Cline - Kurt is not related to me but I have met him a long time ago. Another fast Esser!
Racer
Man, one of my biggest regrets is never racing alot of nationals. I don't think I ever raced more than two for any one sanction in any year.
So my best woulda been
National #77 Cruiser USBA 85 or 86

LOL I may have gotten in ABA top 1,000 in 89 and 90.
Be cool if the ABA and NBL put up past years databases.
Mike'Ultimate Sin of Bmx'Crehan
Good to see you on here Mike.. I hope that this post finds you and your family well. Mike C
Chris C.
Mike Kiniyalocts,
Yeah, I remember Hilliard and always like racing there. Great place to keep in shape and have some fun in the winter months.

I saw Billy late last fall and see his mom and dad several times a year. In fact, they were at my dad' b-day party last weekend. Billy was working and couldn't make it.

He seems to be doing pretty good. You are right, he and his family are simply some of the nicest people you'd ever meet.

Looks like a few of you are in Cinci. I work for an insurance company and used to call on some larger agencies in the Cinci area. Spent many overnights in the area, going to Newport for dinner or a Reds game.
Steve Hoffman
NBL #4 Florida (forget the year and class)
NBL #44 National ranking-haha (again, forget the year/class)
SkyKing
1989-#12 NBL 18 & Over Expert

Whitey Williams and I were tied for the spot after the grands that year (from what I was told, I never verified this) and I got the spot because his last name came after mine alphabetically. I don't think we ever actually raced a moto together and I know he got farther into the elims than I did at the grands. I got a quarter or something with Kenny May, Mike Ellis, and Steve Dillard. Never had a chance. I was never a big power rider like that track favored.

Maybe Whitey knows if this is true about the tiebreaker. Boy did I luck out though.
bmxerpete
My best effort was NBL National #3 in 28-33 Cruiser in 1990. I went into the Grands in a 3 way tie with Dugan Niel and Mike Long...Dugan won it, Mike got second, and I got fifth...in my semi. Poop.
Towerguy43026
Last place, but at least I was consistent, holding the title three years running.
pquinnbmx
I don't think we had national rankings BITD. If we did , nobody I knew of cared about it. The local plate was what people were riding for.

1980, National #2 Cruiser (ABA)
1981, National #4 Pro Cruiser (NBL)

Towerguy,
Did you race in the Columbus area in the 80s?
tedr
In 1986 I got my first credit card and went to some Nationals. Got #2 in ABA 22-30 Cr. Took me quite a while to pay off the bill but it was fun. Got a top 10 in 87 too but cant remember what#?

NBL 28-33 Cr in 1991 and 1992 got #5

In 1993 went from the NBL Grands to the Hospital, took a while to pay that bill too.

Each one of those years Dugan Neil got the #1 in our Class.
whitey
SkyKing - you might be right. I never realized that we tied that year. I looked it up and we did tie -1391 pts. Tough competition that year for sure. I made it all the way to the main that year so it would throw out any qualifier tie breakers. Could be that you did better in your motos or maybe it was the way of the alphabet. Either way nice job....

I remember the name but can't picture you....

1989 National #1 21-27 Cruiser
1989 National #13 18 & Over Expert
1991 Natioanal #1 21-27 Cruiser
1991 National #6 18 & Over Expert

Whitey
The Loper
1984 NBL national #2 17 cruiser-I lost the title to Richie Anderson (Torker at the time) by 10 points.I only needed to make the main to sew up the title.........last place in the main would have been 12 points! I won all my motos and my qualifers throughout the day until the semi........where a dumb crash kept me out of the main and broke my shoulderblade in the process (still somehow managed to race my expert semi after that).

That same year I won my expert class at the Murray World Cup (1984 / 16X).

Never did enough races to be ranked or I missed the grands. Made mains and got everything except a win. 5th at ABA's first Worlds(1994), did well all day then choked the main. Hope to give it a shot again and get a NAG top ten.

1985 #27 14 cruiser. That was it. I saw a lot of names on the back of jerseys thou. Names like Crehan, Birdwell, Jenson and Williams. That was a lot of fun..................... NOT!

Hi Fellow 80's BMX'ers, It's been many years but it's funny how certain races and certain riders pop in to your head. Some may remember me, Mike "Mongo" Stinson, Pittsbugh, PA, Factory Raleigh, CycleCraft, and Profile over the years. My brother Jim rode for Huffy and CycleCraft .It's great to hear comments from the Jersey Boys and the Ohio crew. WOW, memories between Howell, NJ and the old local indoor track freezing my butt off in Columbus, OH.

My best national ranking,
#2 13x, #4 13 cruiser same year. ( 1983 Grands )
The ironic result is that I jumped several spots that weekend to grab the #2 spot, I think 8 spots. The tragedy was dropping from #1 going in to the grands in my cruiser class and choking to I can't remember the rider from California!

Hope all is well, now living in ABA country, Phoenix, AZ

Mongo
The Loper
Mongo,
Whats up brother? To re-fresh your memory...........Danny Steplight (CW) and Mike Scott (Race Inc.) were the 2 guys that snuck in front of you that year in cruiser.I think Kurt Esser (Thruster) may have been the other guy to finish in front of you in the points. I remember you winning just about every cruiser main you were in that year.Still remember how bumbed you were.

Hope all is well..........drop me an e-mail.Tell Jim I owe him a phone call.Just been super busy.

Hilliard indoor locals were the best. Cold, but all the fast midwest guys would show up. Those locals were as tough as a National.
Chris C.
Hilliard was always a great place to keep tuned up. You are right, some of the race quality there was national calibur. Especially for those who were 14-17 years old in the mid-80s.
Mike Stinson
Thanks Blue Max Lopez for the update, you are so right Steplight was the guy. I think that cat only raced the minimum races that year to qualify for the Grands!! You have a great memory, I think I'm still bummed! hahhahahaI e-mailed you over the weekend, did you get my 10 e-mails????

Hilliard was very COLD, but several national ranked guys were there!! Au, Pahud, DK, Kinelotkis, Lyons, the list goes on and on!
Florida Vaughn
No , ranking but made the Main at the 1980 War of the Stars 3 or 4 at Orlando out of about 110 riders, I got forth against Gary Slater, Vince Asbury Kerensky Bullard blew his start and was 8th if my memory is correct

Shoulda made my 16 expert main but blew my semi gate and ended up 5th by half a wheel....
