Full Version: My new Mongoose Motomag

After working a deal through a middle man (RLPaulie) I met up with a guy who is part of a organization called "bikes for the world". Apparently they collect bikes and I guess spruce them up a bit and then send them off to needy places around the globe. I guess they came across these Mongoose Motomag and offered them to the BMX Community (RLPaulie) first before they sent them out. I met up with the guy in Paramus when he traveld through the area, saving $30 or so in shipping and got this bike. It's tough to read the serial # due to heavy paint on the BB but I think it looks to be a mid-81 (F1****) Goose. Paint is flaking pretty badly in some areas on the frame and fork, the Motomag IIs are in great shape, the pads, seat, stem, bars, clamp, are all in great shape. The chainring, BB and headset are stamped Mongoose and in nice shape. The pedals and grips are in decent shape.. so all in all I made out really well.

Good shot of the MotomagII and the paint flaking:

Montgomery County bike license:

another view: Seat is low and the post is pretty stuck, gonna take some elbow grease to remove it:

I think I'l ltry to take it all apart and clean all the individual parts, maybe give the matte parts a new coat and the bars too. My first thought is to keep the frame as is since it has the bike license and Gaitherburg bike shap sticker on it. Maybe I can get touch up paint and hit the bad spots with it. Or just remove the decals get the whole thing repainted and put some Motomag replacement decals on it. Decisions...decisions...

There is a difference here...Mongoose is the frame/fork set...Motomags are the wheels. There was the original Motomag and Motomag II's.

Hey, I'm glad you're happy with it. That one and the two others were about to be sent to Panama.

Admittedly I'm a neophyte at Vintage BMX as well as Mongoose BMX Products. It was described to me as a Mongoose motomag (I think?) please educate me on what the differences are. The Ser # is F13171 as far as I can tell, although some of the serial # might be obscured with red paint.

there are 230 ways to get goosed, at least thats what the 1981 Mongoose brochure tells us, technically speaking that is just a Mongoose, your model is commonly refered as the Motomag Mongoose....and a nice one at that, I'd leave it alone, your only missing 2 1/3 reflectors to make it 100% original.

I just passed the guy who runs that organization. Running towards the answering machine isle at Staples....he was mumbling something about the huge amount of calls he's recieving about Vintage bikes...Just kidding..LoL!!!
Nice survivor, glad to see the ol bike saved.

Just ask me. I'm the bike finder!
...actually there isn't a whole lot left. That last shipment to Panama pretty much depleted the remaining 2006 stock. Back to working collection events.

I would LOVE to find one exactly like that to hang on the wall of the bike shop, AS-IS. Very cool!

Excellent score! There is alot of history right there with the bike in 'as is' condition. I'd personally keep it just like that.
