Ken is never one to sound anything but 110% up. He sounded pretty banged up when I spoke with him this am.

Thanks to Bill Ryan and Crisco (and others) for taking care of Ken's business while he's out of commission. Said he'd be there for a few days.
Stu Thomsen
Heres to a complete recovery. All the best.

Kirk Chrisco has also joined Ken in the surgery room with a broken elbow, he's enroute to the hospital now. Get well soon Kirk!

Apparently he fell in the rhythm while leading his quarter.

Ken Pliska
Hey Guys (just a quick check in with you since I just figured out that I could plug into my hospital room phone cord to log on via dial up),

Thanks for the well wishes, I certainly appreciate them all.

Surgery went well last night and I have been itching to get out all day. Needless to say I'll be here for a while. Tomorrow they'll evaluate me again and figure out exactly how to get me home. Seems they need to give me a blood thinning shot within an hour of my flight to be safe to make sure I don't have a clot in flight. They said I should be able to walk in about two months. This obviously wipes out the next four months of racing. Many of my trips are already prepaid with no refunds available, so I'll probably still limp over to Gary's Phoenix BBQ to hang out with you guys next month.

I won't bore you with all of the details but let's just say when I looked at my left foot and it was pointing the wrong way, I knew I was not going to be an easy recovery.

The most serious injury in this hospital right now is my good friend, Kirk Chrisco. My nurse is going to grab me a wheelchair so I can go visit Kirk a little later tonight. Kirk's elbow injury turned out to be his neck and back instead. He is waiting for his wife to arrive from La Quinta sometime tonight. Kirk was still in good spirits when he called me a little while ago. He said, "Hey Ken, let's make a deal." "Let's not race any NBL races, that is if we ever CAN race bikes again." His smile came right through the phone.

Please keep Kirk in your prayers.
bmxmom
take care ken and everyone else injured this weekend. be careful out there...
HinkDog411
Look at that. BOTH guys are in the same hospital AND calling each other on the phone cracking jokes! Will any of us ever grow up?

Ken, I hope you get better soon, man. I wish I had introduced myself this weekend, but I did see you a few times in practice and staging. I will def. intro at Gary's next month.

Kirk, get better man. I still appreciate that you helped me 2 yrs. ago in Prunedale and that you are just a genuine good guy, let me know if there's anything I can do, you too Ken.

What you guys are dealing with is making me feel like a wimp after my bronco ride on Sat. in 3rd round! But at least you guys have good meds to keep you comfy!

Take it easy, get well soon to both of you and I'll catch you next time,

Jon "HinkDog411" Hinkle

Ken- My wife had a conference in Vegas last weekend and I tagged along. I found myself wandering around the race Sat. and I saw your name on the back of the trailer. I looked around for you, wanting to say hello. Never found you and sorry to hear about your slam.

As far as the injury goes, I've done it twice. Expect 3 months of nothing much. When you get back, stick with the PT and work on your mobility and range of motion for your ankle. It'll come back but it will take a year until you start to feel normal.

I don't want to bum you out with the news but quite the opposite. I have come back twice from the same type break. As long as the determination is there, you'll be fine. Drink your milk for strong bones! Take care!

Prayer for a speedy recover for you both. Get well soon guys.

Ken,

When you and I are in the Old Folks Home we can open the photo albums and compare X-Rays!

I feel for you brother. Your break sounds a lot like mine from 1989. Both bones...foot pointing the wrong direction. It's a tough one to rehab, but you are the rehab King.

Hang in there Kenny.
Kip
Hope you're back on a bike soon Ken.

Hey Pliska, hang in there bro. i was in your posisition about 5 years ago. double break about 4 inches below the knee. i missed 3 months of work, was walking on crutches after about a month,(3 weeks of a hospital bed in my living room with the range of motion machine) and was back on a bike after about 4 or 5 months. so with all that math, i will see you at the canadian grands in sept.

Hang in there and if there is anything you need, call me.............

tell capt Kirk get well also, i hope the hospital can handle you two.

Monty

Jason,
Ken had some further testing to go through today and tomorrow AM. He was hopeful at that time to get on a plane and head home. I'm not sure if the hospital will be transporting him or not. We got cut short talking when his nurse was bringing him food. He sounded really good today given the circumstances.

Wow, this absolutely sucks. I was running (limping) at the gym yesterday, thinking about racing and thinking about how Ken just dominates our age class while holding down a real job, kids, etc. I admire Ken and respect him and wish only the best. Get well soon, buddy. Mind over matter.

Ken,
Always enjoyed seeing you at the Rock. Get better and hope to see you there again.

Any updates on Ken?
ziggy1
Ken, been there on that one so I totally relate with how you may be feeling. Do not let minor set backs get in your way or caws you to loose focus on the tasks at hand. Please do all you can to keep the mass and strength normal, it will help your return to full speed.

It’s honorable to se you concerned about someone ells when you are hurting. That’s part of what sets people like us apart from e masses. Get well soon and stay away from the pain pills.

Ride on my friend..... Ziggy

Well there goes your coming out party in 41-45 in Pasco....I was looking forward to getting back on the track with you this year... I heard from a bird that you had been training real hard this year and was going to make your mark. Now who is going to put me up in Rockford again when I am homeless? or load my bike after separating my shoulder? I do hope you have a speedy and good recovery and if you are not on too many pain meds or any other meds in Phoenix I will buy you a beer (you are allowed to have one now that you are not training for a few months)...Good luck, take care and will see you on the circuit soon enough.

I spoke with Ken yesterday as he was getting ready to leave the hospital. He was back to his upbeat self.

Did you make it home?
Ken Pliska
I am back home in Portland now Thanks again for all of the positive thoughts. You guys rule!

Its no secret that I live my life a bit differently than most of the general public. I haven't had a drop of alcohol in 25 years, I don't smoke, do drugs, or partake in any of the socially acceptable vices that tend to take years off of one's life. I haven't had red meat in 19 years and overall, I am a pretty healthy guy considering I am a 41 year old Real Estate Broker.

I have raced all of my life. We had a track set up in our huge garage as kids for neighborhood skateboard races when we were eight. I raced BMX bikes all over the country from ages 12-18. I raced Drag Cars, SCCA sports cars, Pro Solo, etc., during college. Raced road and mountain bikes during those college years as well. These days you can still find me on road bikes, DS, DH, MountainCross, and of course BMX bikes as I travel around the country having a good time and keeping young.

Even when I have a little setback (we often call broken bones setbacks), I fully understand that I assume all risks the second I throw my leg over a bike and gate up. In the whole risk vs. reward debate, I will never second guess myself. I am a cycling enthusiast. Nothing will ever change that.

If I had to live a sheltered life, I honestly don't think I could stand it. If I seriously had to worry about what "could" or "may" happen doing this or doing that, you may as well just lock me up and take away all of my bikes and toys. I could just as easily break a neck, leg, back or ??? on one of my quads or three wheelers or making the wrong move on the racquetball court. Just two months ago, after a full day of snowboarding and messing around with my kids, I fell off of our snow covered front porch on my way to a racquetball game. One inch either way very well could have resulted in some nasty broken bones or more, but I dodged a bullet on that day.

Last Saturday in Boulder City, I obviously didn't dodge a bullet and ended up with some nasty breaks in my left leg. I had flown in solo and was very fortunate to have many members of my team on hand to help out and take charge of everything that was going on with all of my things that were there at the time.

Bill Ryan, along with his son Lincoln, followed my ambulance to the hospital and made sure I was checked in and relaxed as my surgery details were being worked out. The entire ride in that ambulance, I could see Bill calling folks and giving information on both his and my cell phones as he followed us. Kenth Fallen and his wife, Laura (even though Kenth had just broken his collarbone and thumb earlier in the day) were right there with me on the track as the first responders tried to keep me from going into shock. They even grabbed my phone and ID from my rental car so I would have everything I needed at the hospital. Bill even dialed my phone to let all of my family members know what was going on as I was being tended to on the side of the track.

Snap's Bob Coover was extremely helpful as he was one of the first guys to reach me on the track. He made sure they removed my shoe before the swelling became too severe. We worked together to get my point across that I needed my gear carefully removed as quickly as possible. Nothing needed to be cut off that way the scissors happy crew wanted to. Pretty funny trying to get that point across while you are going into shock. The only things they ended up cutting off of me were my socks and Lycra tights that I was wearing under my race pants.

I'll be out for a while with this setback and I may not return to the track until much later this year or sometime next year. One thing you can count on is the fact that I will return. You cannot keep me away from my bikes.

Take 'er easy Ken. Get well.
