well lookie what flopped into my lap today.. an untouched 1978 Team Mongoose. original owner rolled it into my LBS and took $100 trade-in on a new school something or other.

as tossed in the back of my pickup:

rear wheel is a Shimano hi flange hub laced into a 1st generation Araya 7B. front wheel is a Sunshine hi flange hub laced into another 1st gen Araya 7B.

non-fluted alloy seatpost - same post PK ran on his factory issued Team Goose.

Decoster fork - note the headtube decals used as fork decals.. and the Beaver's Bicycles decals on the fork legs, seatmast, and seatpost.

Shimano double clamp stem with Race Inc alloy bars.

couple more..

Wow! Simply, wow...

TIM, your collection depth is amazing. I am as jealous as I am in awe of your collection. That survivor is terminaly cool.
1azbikeman
Nice score what are the plans for it? Any idea on replicating the old candy apple color Mongooses had BITD?
TIM
i plan to clean it up and leave it as is. the decals and history lesson are too cool to dog up with fresh powder.
MNW
Beaver's Bicycles in Tarzana, CA... It's a shame that most will know that town because Britney Spears got her head shaved and got a couple of tats there.

Nice find Tim, cool addition to your collection.
Reilley1
Are those JT grips??

Nice SR stem too...
t nile
Thanks for leaving it as is TIM.
nintendoninja
looks like the frame was red at one point...
Randy
I'm suprised the lbs paid that much for it, unless they knew you'd be right over. Looks trashed to the untrained eye.

Shimano stem? I never knew that, I have a few but didn't know the maker, you sure?

it was originally candy red, as one would expect from a Team Goose.

Shimano stem? I never knew that,
as pictured in the 1978 Laguna catalog, page 28. Shimano MX Stem.

my LBS has been in biz since the early '70s, in the San Fernando Valley. he knows his bmx history.

Tim, I respect that. I have enough show bikes myself, and have already promised myself that I will build no more. That inspires me to add a few survivors to my lineup.
AndyDiamond
Cool grips.
What are they?

Candy red again?
TIM
this is how the archeological dig progresses..

"hello?"

"hi Tim. i took this old nickel goose in on a trade today. want it?"

"i'll swing by and take a look. thanks!"

next day...

*swing by bike shop.

*owner pulls bike out of back.

*hmmm. that's a Decoster fork.

*hmmm. 7Bs and Shimano hub.

*HMMMM. smooth alloy post (just like PK's)

*HMMM. i see red candy paint up in the gussett.

*BINGO. "T" stamped under serial# in bb shell. and yowza! it's an early one.

"what'd you credit the guy in trade?"

"$100. you want it?"

"sure. how about $200?"

"sold."
Bike Crazy.
The Race Inc. bars really make the whole bike, nice find.

Those wonderfully horrible JT Grips and Scot B stem. Nice!
Reilley1
76-78 almost anything that came from the JBM group was tagged as Shimano. Tange forks, Sakae Ryngo (SR) stem amongst others.
Dave Muggleston
I know I've asked you about this before, TIM, but how about walking us through the cleanup process?
pquinnbmx
I don't know about this whole deal. What if the guy who traded it in gets on eBay and checks prices....{ tongue in cheek wagging and making light of other posts I've see on here}
TIM
Reilley's got sour grapes! Reilley's got sour grapes!

the '78 Laguna catalog lists many Shimano parts, as well as many SR parts.

btw..

the bars have no decal, so could be plain jane Laguna "alloy super bars" (page 23)
Curt
Nice find.

As a minor point regarding the Beavers Stickers. The red on foil back was from the John Beaver Era. Ask Rick Twomey about John, A good man who past away about a year ago.

The blue on silver were the first stickers of the Bruce McConnell Era, which of course were followed by the round Beaver face in mid 79.

Who is your LBS? Customs, Pedal Shop, Europa??? Gus Dandos....just kidding.
Reilley1
Sour?

The 77 Mongoose catalog shows the stem as an SR stem
TIM
hee haw! so many companies wanting their name on a basically crappy stem.

go figure.

and that's when he's in a good mood.

thanks for the info, Curt. i was wondering, because the frame decal was applied at some point after the candy red was stripped off. your time frame tells me the kid wanted the red gone pretty soon after getting the bike. betting he wanted the polished nickel look with the team goose parts, rather than a basic motomag.

Bobby Encinas ran one of stems on his Redline.

I'm totally liking that stem actually even if it was crap. It was my first "double-clamp" stem back in the stoneage.
TIM
what's the time frame on those JT grips? i've never seen another pair.
caferacer
Hi tim if you look at any JT adds in 1980 bmxa's you will see those grips.
i visited j.t in 82 and dont remeber seeing them while there.
Jimmy
I like seeing non-original stickers that were applied on parts back when it wasnt old.
Curt
Regarding that stem SR vs. Shimano. I had one on my first goose and remember paying 13.95 (I think I still have the reciept) for a Shimano Stem (and like Rick it was my first doubleclamp.)

I had no idea (then) that it was anyrhing but that, and I did not think it was crappy LOL.

RE: the Europa Owner. BITD he actually was a funny guy, maybe not laugh riot funny, but funny. I am surprised he is still doing it, perhaps he is just all biz and/or not into as he once was or not getting laid or......???
Reilley1
Grips came out sometime in 79. A certain King has a few sets.
o.s.Luma
Real nice Tim. I too appriciate that you are leaving it as is. I am partial to survivors!
Socalbmxer
Dennis from Europa......my guess is that he's just burned out on the bike business. The problem is he let's his customers know right when they walk in, bad move.

It's a shame because Europa had an awesome race team back in the 80's.

Oh, and don't even bother asking him if he wants to sell his GLJ pit bike he has hanging in the back....he'll just about chase you out of the store with a broom.

Back to the topic. Nice close to home find Tim. If the LBS you're talking about is owned by Kevin, yes he knows his BMX history.
