I rode a Sting back in the day and have been lucky enough to collect a couple.
1. 1979 chrome Factory Schwinn display cut-away Sting frame.
2. 1980 Sting F/F-- to become my Poulson CLONE project.
3. NOS black Sting frame and fork.
Please check out ebay auction 110082048116. Can anyone give me any information on this frame? I think it's a Paramount/Chicago built custom frame for a factory rider in 1976 or 1977. If you take a look at the Joe Kid Sting-Ray moving you can see Rupe, Jackson, and others riding this frame during that period. It's got a center to center 19" top tube and a euro bottom bracket-- strange combo-- but maybe custom for a team rider. It's also got Campy track drop-outs and it's all fully brazed like the Sting. Is this a pre-Sting proto type? Schwinn never prouduced this frame. The serial number is MH023043. It's cool and I plan on restoring it! It looks like most of the Schwinn riders in 77 and 78 were riding the Mongoose re-labeled forks- What do you think?

If that was the bead blasted one that was once owned by a Schwinn engineer, and sold about 7-10 days ago, I remember the serial number dating it back to 1973. Does this sound right?

Yeah, that's the one-- the guy's that sold it said he got it from an Schwinn fabicator and that guy died in 1976. The guy was thinking it was made around 1975 to 76!
Send me a photo of your MP clone if you got one? I am planning on doing a white 82'sh clone.

the serial number dates the frame to December 1972.
of course it could have been constructed later with odd lots out of the scrap bin. Schwinn stamped the serials into the headtubes before the frames were welded up.
pretty cool find, Troy!

That's one of the early team frames, very trick piece for it's time!
Eric Rupe or Greg Hill may better fill us in on it. Those were mid 70's frames when the Competition Scrambles was the big gun in the schwinn line up.

Indeed, Rod is correct.
That is an early Team Schwinn frame.
I'll try and rustle up the pix from the catalogs.

Thanks for the information guy's. I have been wanting to do a mid-70's build and I finally got something strange! Any idea on the forks. In photo's and catalog's all I can see is the Mongoose forks re-decaled as Schwinn and some other type of leading edge fork-- any idea if it's a Tange or maybe Redline re-lebel? It also appears like the decal's used on this frame would have just been the plan red and white water slides? Maybe a red and white head tube badge? I think it would be cool to also do a Paramount Olympic rings decal on the seat tube. If anyone has any further information please let me know-- It looks like this frame was painted and not chromed-- can anyone remember any of the colors?
Thanks
Troy

Troy,
Don't know your plans for it but it were mine that bad boy would be chrome and this would be the final look!
One of those Rupe boy's in 77' that bike rocks and notice it uses the mongoose style fork and has that decal on the seat tube. Also looks to have those black weinman brakes schwinn sold with the weinman knob adjuster.
And by the way who could that be flyin by with that BEL-RAY jersey on..............STU!

Yeah it is a cool frame for sure!
I know I jumped on the Team Schwinn right away, and I am anxious to look for the catalog pix asap.
The only thing that has been gnawing at me is the serial number on it. As far as I know the Team Schwinn carried the Taiwan badges, and serial numbers too.
With a Chicago serial number, I am anxious to find out if it might not be an early Competition Scrambler. The S/N, leads me to believe it was fabricated in the Paramount room, not Taiwan.
Both had short head tubes. Both were brazed. Both had the large seat post. The Paramount room was known to use things like Campy droupouts, and other things like that when creating their stuff. Those campy dropouts are leaning me towards a Comp. Scrambler after thinking more on this too...
The serial number thing is going to make me look at this one some more. I love a good ID project once in a while.

I purchased that frame off a custom frame builder named Ron Boi. He was good friends with Charles "Spike" Shannon-- one of the real old time frame builders at Chicago. The frame was built and rode by the team in 1975/76 ish! One of the riders ran the chain ring into the frame. Spike Shannon pulled it out of the trash and took if over to Ron Boi's to fix. Spike Shannon died in 1976 and that frame was on a hook until I purchased it last week. Ted, thanks for the info-- can't wait to see if you can did up any other shots!

Those forks are actually Schwinn forks, copied from Mongoose of course.
Their in the old Schwinn catalogs right next to nickel DeCoster forks, the Schwinn copies were chromed.
