Full Version: a better than average score (much)

I've come to recognize that just because someone says they have an old school BMX bike, doesn't A) mean that it's old school, B) doesn't mean it's an old school bike that is worth having and C) doesn't mean that it's not rusted out with crappy components. So when I hear about a bike, I temper my enthusiasm, and when I heard about an "early 80's GT BMX bike," I didn't assume it was something worth having. I went to check it out, of course, and if it is was an early 80's GT, then, sweet. Unfortunately, the original wheels were gone (though the seller/original owner told me they had Bullseye hubs, but that he'd sold them a while back), and some midschool wheels had been substitued. Besides that, the original seat post had been replaced, the brakes were mid school and the grips weren't original. BUT, the chrome was as good as I've ever seen on a frame that's not NOS and not re-plated (with decals in good shape). The serial made it an '82. It had the lovely blue Redline Brute stem you see pictured below, in great condition and Shimano DX pedals in good (but scraped up) condition. But most importantly, it had the original cranks...Profile Box cranks!!! The chrome on them is really good, to boot. Life is good.

DAN
Now that is a good score!
AZquadrider
How much did that one cost you?

MORE MORE MORE Pics!

That's is a great Score!
John De Bruin
Nice. Are those the same as the early Hutch cranks? What would the difference be?
frazer
I gave him $200 for it, which was a lot more than he'd have gotten if he'd sold it at his garage sale (which is what he would have done, otherwise). I felt good about that, and he flet good, as well, so everyone was a winner.

Parts worth mentioning:
82 GT frame/fork
GT pro bars
Profile Box cranks/bottom bracket
Redline Brute stem
Tuf Neck post clamp
Shimano DX pedals

Here's some more pics. One is of a decal stuck to the bars that reads "Series One" Anyone know about that or what it referrs to?

I need to polish up the cranks. The chrome is a lot better than it looks in this pic.

Cheers,
Frazer

Someone else probably knows better than me, but my understanding is that the original Hutch cranks are the same as the original Profiles. I attribute these to Profile because they have a Profile spider, but I suppose they could be Hutch if you want them to be. Correct me if I'm wrong about that.
Brian P
sweet score, i too recently had an offer for a "early 80's gt" and kept it cool.............

only to find a beat to !$#@ mid 90's dyno vfr!

at least one of found an early 80's gt......
steef
Seriesone looks like a Haro number plate sticker?
cheez
Cranks alone worth more than the 200, nice score
Kurt.
That's just beautiful Frazer. Great score.

That has to be a HARO sticker. The Series One plate had exactly the same font, except it was molded into the plastic of the plate.

Very very cool score.
frazer
Ah, yes, Haro...thanks for the info.

And thanks for your kind compliments. I don't usually like to toot my own whistle when I pick up a new bike, but this time I couldn't help it.

I sold a pretty beat set of Profile Box cranks about 3 years ago for $725 (I'd been beating myself up about selling them until last night).
Bike Crazy.
I'd hit more garage sales if people would put bikes like that out more.
BMX2112
wow great score Frazer !!!
area211
Beautiful! There's treasure out there!... and probably a lot of it... just a matter of finding it. Wow, both inspiring and depressing at the same time. congratulations.

Here's a link to some info about the Hutch/Profile cranks (JJR's) with info from this site included.

Wow, to find the frame and fork is one thing, but the cranks, that is a major find!!!
AZquadrider
Definitely a "SWEET DEAL", I wish I had more time to hit garage sales more often.
John De Bruin
Frazer, I would be interested in buying the cranks if your plan is to sell them. According to JJR's web site, it sounds like the only difference between Profile and Hutch was the spline length on the spindle, which is hidden anyways. I already have the crank arm decals, so it would be a perfect match.

Send me a PM if interested.
geauxx4itbmx
Would you be interested in selling the cranks for 400...I will double your money back and you get the rest for free and a positive 200 bones!! Email me at jvanbuskirk@hotmail.com.....Jason

Holy Smokes! That was a great score!

Wow - nice score!

Those cranks are awesome (and yeah, worth a wad - yadda, yadda...)

You gonna take it for a spin?

No, I'm planning to keep 'em, not sell 'em. I just can't bring myself to sell stuff this good, because money is so fleeting. If I got a whole $1000 for 'em, that would only be half of my combined motgage/property tax for one month. I MIGHT (and I do mean might) consider a trade for something equally cool (don't know exactly what that would be, but it would have to be VERY cool. So if you're desperate for 'em and have something super sweet to offer up, PM me.
Keep_It_Warm
well done frazer...thats right up there with Scores Of The Year for 2007

Cranks are beautiful!

Those cranks are awesome!

SCORRRE!!! One of the best find this yr!!
John De Bruin
I'm not desperate for them, but keep me in mind if anything changes.
AndyDiamond
RIDE IT!
frazer
Yes Sir, Mr. Diamond. I will be redistributing things a bit (can't have wheels from 1996 on a classic Santa Ana GT, now can I), and then I will ride it about, gleefully.
RYAN-GT3540
WOW!!!!!!

Definately score of the year so far. Sweet find Frazer.
jfretless
hey there's a idea...

how about a scores of the year calendar?

you could even make it a addition to the current calendar... there are a lot of calendars that have blurbs on them along with a smaller picture on the page... my city's calendar has "did you know..." info on it right below the picture and above the dates.

I think that might work...

btw... Nice score Frazer. Couldn't have found a better home.

you're a luky man frazer! Add another one to a great collection...

Here are a few more pics, as I just finally removed the arms and spindle from the bike. Please note that I have done NO POLISHING other than wipeing the ams and spindle down with windex. As you can see, the spindle is splined all the way down it's length. It's been suggested that the goldish color and the full length splines mean these are Hutch cranks, but as best I can tell, what they are is up to the individual to decide, because there doesn't seem to be any good concrete identifiers.

I'm trying to come up with a good way to remove the bearings (alloy cups) without doing them any damage. Any ideas?

To everyone who's emailed and PMed me: Thanks. I'll get back to all of you as soon as I can (but I have a 9 month old, and there is never enough time).

OLDSKOOLPK
WOW!!! First Fully splined spindle i (personally) have ever seen!!! Very Cool Frazer...One HECK of a find!!!!

Jon
ol'phart
thems be hutch cranks matey - arg - and to sell at the G you mentioned would be a gross under-estimate .....

wouldn't be surprised if they sold at 3x's that plus, considering especially the og condition they flaunt

that was a score dreams are made of, nice one !
Keep_It_Warm
Yes, those are 1st Gen Hutch cranks....$2K minimum. Probably a bit more $ than that!

Beautiful original comdition. You've struck "gold" frazer!

I use a wood dowel or section of broomstick to tap out the bearings. Instead of hammer and chisel or hammer and punch, hammer and dowel. Maybe cover the end of the dowel with a piece of inner tube for extra protection.

Hey, at least we know there are at least 115 other sets out there. Let's get lookin!
frazer
Here's a final few pictures and a quick update:

I gave them a cleaning and a polish, but stopped short of really polishing up the spider, beyond just a good surface wipe down.

When I was polishing them up, I noticed a VERY faint area on the face of the crank that was just a bit shinier. Holding it just so, I was able to barely make out a letter. Then some other letters, as I tilted it (hard to see more than one at a time). Apparently there had been some rub on decals there at some point, but not for very long because the difference between the area where they were and where they weren't was subtle. Here's what the letters spelled: Drive side - "PROFIL" Yes, no "E" on that, because the person who put it on had run out of room for the E. And I'm actually inferring the "L" because it was too subtle to actually make out. Non-drive side - "OAYSS" then trailing off to something completely illegible, in fact, I'm not entirely sure the second S was there. When I say faint, I mean really really faint. It took me four days of owning them to stumble upon it, and you can't see it at all unless the light is right (I saw it under light from my picture window, can't see it at night with a the overhead light). There would be absolutely no way to photograph this except, maybe, one letter at a time, but I still doubt that there would be much to see. There was no evidence of this sort to suggest that they'd ever had either Hutch or Profile decals.

In the last picture, you'll note the only notable blemish in the chrome, though there are a few other pin prick pits.

I have decided to release them into the world, as there are a few of you who clearly will love them more than I do, and who have made rather astonishing offers for them. I know they will be wonderfully appreciate by whoever ends up with them.

Thanks everyone for your enthusiasm and interest!

Greg_Hanna
They are very very Early Profile cranks, that is what you have!!!
They were called Odyssey Cranks by Profile, even the early square armed ones with the sticker indent were called Odyssey. They had a black and white decal that said Odyssey rather than the traditional Profile decal. The traditional Profile decal came a little later but was also used on the square arms with the sticker indent.
They are Profile cranks not Hutch! Those Odyssey cranks were virtually identical to the Early Hutch cranks except for the spider.
Congrats on having one of about 5 known sets of those cranks. And getting them the old fashioned way.......SCORE!!!!!!
DAN
Well Frazer I'd say the house payment is covered this month! The amazing thing is this is the second set of these he's found!
frazer
It's true, Dan, I had another set (serial #141) that I came upon a few years back. They were virtually identical (same spindle and all). They were fairly beat up, but not terribly so. They came on a bike with a hodgepodge of mismatched era parts, and the cranks were held on by hex bolts (which, initially, I assumed to be hardware original to the cranks). So I was assuming that they must be some sort of crappy midschool things. Because the hex bolts were of the counter sink variety, they didn't hold the arms on very well, and I assumed that they were just messed up and that I might as well throw them out (I actually had them in my hand, considering whether to throw them into the metal recycling...). But luckily, I had the good sense to inquite with the allmighty mind of VBMX before making that grave mistake.
