As many of you noticed, there is a seller on ebay on in the PacNW area that recently offered a whole stack of NOS Browning 2-speed systems and Shimano tensioner as well as the Sturmey-Archer twist grip shifter (which you don't really need unless you use two brakes). The Browning units do not come with any instructions as they were only to be installed by authorized dealers bitd.

When I found a NOS 2-speed unit almost two years ago, I was lucky enough to get in contact with the modern-day Browning company and they sent me a copy of the manual that had been stored for 20 years.

With the manual, installation and adjustments are quite easy. The only troublesome things are to machine a proper spacer to mount it on a Profile or Flight spindle, to find a cable stop to be mounted on the downtube and to make sure that the steel tab sticking out on the large sprocket does not touch the crank arm when the sprocket is swung outwards. I had to do a bit of grinding on mine to provide clearance.

There is another thread on here showing pictures of the unit on my DY (which I have recently sold). These could help with your installation.

I scanned the 20-page manual (split in two files to reduce the size) and also the 4-page 'revision' and linked the .pdf format files below. Note that the revision manual shows a system design changes that allows the barrel unit to be rotated. This was meant to be used on frames on which the seattube was not aligned with the centerline of the bottom bracket tube. I have never seen any of those units. Maybe they never went into production.
