I'm trying to determine the production year of a 20" Aluminum frame Serial Number NR DG 259 on the dropout.
This frame has not been repaired and came to me with the early Bologna cut Landing Gear Forks.
If you can help me, I also need to determine the correct decals to be placed on this frame.

As a final note, I have another frame set with Bottema race forks and even though I dont have the Serial number at reach, It called my attention that the letter D is backwards.

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Here's my Nomura, which I built last year - the dropouts were redone by Rod Miles, when owned by Brian Hayes, so I don't know the serial no.

It is in the process of a re-build, with M1 Bottema's, DX Cranks and Araya 7B's/Bullseye Hub combo. Pics soon hopefully, but here's ones from last summer.

Monkey, the serial on your frame was on the bb not the dropout. They were originally on the bb but they were getting scuffed off so Wade moved them.

Juan, email Bob Matherly. His email is in the first post. He is the expert on Nomura and has regular contact with Wade Nomura. Haney will also be able to help you.

Thanks Brian, I was able to contact Bob and got pretty much all the info I was looking for... smile.gif

Found a couple of old pictures. A dork in his racing gear and Wade Nomura

Nomuras are very cool and rare collector's items. I can remember interviewing Weldon and Wade for the BMXer back in 82.

Bobby, one thing you may want to run through the fact checker is:

"Wade Nomura's frames have won more Nationals races than any other aluminum frames in the history of BMX racing! "

More than PK Rippers or Floval Flyers, GTs or Redlines?

They were a rare sight. I only ever saw one at a race. My guess was it was a factory rider. Super clean uniform and all. The bike was stunning polished aluminum model.

Three days in, the seller pulled the auction so we'll never know who ended up with it until it appears somewhere.

If I remember correctly, some slimeball placed a big bid then retracted it so he could see everyone's max bid. I hope he wasn't albe to buy it directly from the seller.

This is why it was pulled. The owner and the eventual buyer were already in contact and buyer got spooked by that so bailed. The seller contacted him and they worked it out. It has been built up very very well. Couldn't have gone to a better cat.

That's good to hear. I happened to look in on the auction a couple times and it wasn't hard to figure out some jerk was playing games. Glad he screwed himself and it's too bad he wasn't called out by name.

hey guys..

new to this site. living in santa barbara, ca (nomura's birth place) i thought i would share a little information:

the original shop was on the corner of de la vina and alamar street in santa barbara. the serial # NRDG XXX stood for nomura racing (nr) and the letters dg stood for donny greene, who did the anodizing. he worked at neal fey, a company that specializes in metal finishing.

my bike is # nrdg 161, (20") and is purple. it has an interesting story:

back in 82 (or so) my friend william light raced on the nomura team. at the time, i had a supergoose, which was the all chromo version of the mongoose. i had wanted a nomura, but at the time, the frames alone were over $350!

he and wade were friends, and william had bike #17 (all polished). william loaned me 17 while his bike was being built. (#161) i was so in love with 161, that william sold it to me, and had another purple bike commisioned. (i will get that # tomorrow). he had both 17 and a purple bike for a long time.

sometime in the 90's william moved to seattle. 17 was stolen from his appartment. if anyone knows where 17 is, it belongs to my friend and should be considered stolen property.

shortly before he moved, i sold 161 (around 1986). in 1998 i saw an ad for an old bmx bike. while the picture was fuzzy, i could tell it was a nomura. i went to see it, and sure enough, it was an old nomura, that had been purple. somebody tried to strip the anodizing off, but didnt do a good job. when i saw it, i told the owner (an old man who was selling this "piece of crap" bike because his son went to college) that the serial # was nrdg161. he checked, and was floored that i knew. i told him it was my old bike from my childhood! i gave him $100, and 161 is now back at home, waiting for restoration!

i build chevy impalas, so as soon as i am between cars, i am going to restore it to its condition when i had it. it still has the one piece redline cranks, uni seat, and tuff neck stem!

i will post some pictures soon. after reading this topic, i am now super motivated to get 161 restored.

donny greene was the welder. neal fey company did the anodizing. (its late and im tired!)

Cool story Jason.

Great looking bikes Zoo! Don't think I've ever seen a green one before, either. Mine's all in pieces in the garage right now. I took it apart and started cleaning it up last year but never finished putting it back together. Gotta find a new seat post, too.

I currently have one Nomura, NRDG 275, it is a Purple Alloy frame and it is my third such bike. It is equipped with Hutch Pro Forks, GT Cranks, GT Expert Bars, Odyssey stem, Ambrosio rims, Suntour Track Hubs, a 14t rear sprocket(a velodrome freewheel training sprocket)

I still ride it, though not on a track, and it is still quick and a joy to ride.

My other bike, Which Jason pointed out was stolen(actually in late 86) in the Seattle area was NRDG 0017. I am still looking for it. When stolen, it was equipped with Graphights, First Generation Proflie cranks, Bottema light forks, SE Pro bars, Torker stem, and Shimano DX pedals. The frame was a first generation Nomura frame, with the narrow diameter chain stay brace, and the smaller diameter seat post tube(11/16ths if I remember right) it was a polished frame, and had race damage repairs on the Floval down tube at the head set( cracked and re-welded, with slight deformation on the lower side of the down tube)

The serial numbers are slightly filled in (from the first time it was stolen, but were still recognizable.

If you find it please contact me on this board, no questions will be asked.

Chris, we started with the Tange TRX's, those are just as authentic as Bottema's for an old school Nomura! A little elbow grease and mothers polish and that frame will be looking sweet again!
ChrisHunt
Thanks!

I have polished the frame and it is awesome now. I know the TRX's are period correct like the Bottema's and will use them until I get the Bottema's I just bought re-chromed. I just like the extended fork past the drop outs... they just look cool.

I remember going to pick up my Nomura Serial# NRDG279 20" as a child directly from Wade's house some 30 years ago I suppose. I have had it in my garage ever since. The Crank Tioga Pro Neck,Pedals VP707 (don't know the brand), Goose Neck SR MS-422, Forks (no name),Brake Lever Dia-Compe MX,and rear brake caliper are all original. Not original: Araya 20 x 3/8 chrome rims, and GT Pro Series chrome bars with Toadstool grips should all be period correct. I remember doing all that stuff a year or so later. The only thing that is more recent is the DK seat that I put on years later because the original seat cracked around the mounting bracket. I just wanted to share a bit of bmx history with you all.

Beautiful!

I could keep on re-reading this thread, amazing machines...

Just a quick question, out of the 350 (roughly...) Aluminium 20" Nomuras does anyone know the colour breakdown, eg, how many green were produced, how many golds etc...

Cheers
