Full Version: skyway TA chrome frame

I have just discovered that one of my TA frames that is white, is actually chrome underneath the frame paint, does anyone else have a frame that was painted like this. The bike is a survivor and has never been painted, it has original decals and stuff on it. I am starting to believe that maybe skyway just took chrome frames and painted over the top of current stock they may have had sitting around when the white fashion started. Funnily enough, the forks are not chrome underneath, just bare metal. Does anyone else have a frame thats chrome under the white?

i dont have a skyway like that but i know alot of manufacturers did it.

cw did it in huge amounts. they took alot of there products and powdercoated the neon colors over chrome bars.

they also powdered alot of chrome bars black and white.

mongoose did the same thing in the mid 80's.

common stuff

Did you scratch off enough to see if it was nice enough chrome to stand on it's own?

unfortunately BridgeCity, i didnt, mainly because the white is still really nice, just a couple of fair sized scratches. The other problem is , the forks are white with no chrome underneath, so i cant make a complete all chrome frame and fork kit. I just noticed it under the frame scratches and thought it was odd that it was chrome. From what im seeing though, the chrome looks to be really good show quality, so maybe skyway did just grab the show chromed frames and coat em white ?

a lot of companies also painted over chrome if the frame had a significant blemish in the chrome. most common was thin spots in the chrome...the type where you could see the nickel or copper plate underneath.

Yup. What Mr Coasterbrake said!

Hutch did that a lot, they were real picky about their "show chrome" finish so they ended up with a Candy or other color finish.
