Pat, STR-1 did a massive loopytail directory a few years back. I guess many of those frames have traded hands by now though.

The serial on the other looptail is #1121. It also has the letters "SPOTTS" on the bottom of the BB as well. Those are some initials of the original owner in Michigan.

Thanks Bob. I saw this and was getting ready to email you.

There is no pre serial number looptail quad, is there? I thought all looptails had a serial stamped (some very lightly) on the BB shell.
QUOTE:
"While we are on the subject let's discuss the forks on the loops too ie. Cycle Pro, 1st gen LG etc"
The mild steel frames in the beginning in 79 and the early chromoly frames up to 81 would have used Cycle Pro "BMX Innovations" forks as the "correct" forks. Landing Gear were introduced in 1981, so the 81 and 82 loop Quads could have used either forks as "correct" as the Cycle Pro were still available, but maybe not through SE with the "BMX Innovations" decals. The first Landing Gear were all unstamped through 84 (as we all know), but notice Andy Diamond's forks. The very first LG had solid dropouts before the std 3 hole drops we're all use to. I would definately say those forks are original to that frame. I too can't believe that guy powdered a chrome Quad, but it does look killer in white.
While we're at it, I think Pat (STR1) posted at some point the time difference in the braced and non braced chromoly frames. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the early chromoly frames were the ones with the crossbraces, that carried over from the mild steel frames. The later (81-82) chromoly frames were the ones with no cross braces. If this is right, then the frames I have& had, had the forks reversed as the one I got from Bob Bohlmann, now Waza's, has the cross braces but had LG forks with it and my other one (pic above) has no cross braces but came to me with the CP forks.

The other thing I have noticed is that the moly frames without braces have vent holes on the inside of the loop and the frames with braces don't have these vent holes. Interesting.

Yes STR-1 may have done this a few years back but by now many more have turned up into the hands of collectors or members. I cant see anyone that wanted their old bike back paying what some of these sell for. Im sure my chromoly as bmx dads among a few others unrestored that I have seen on ebay have turned up. So we wait and see how many response we get here. Thanks

Many Thanks to Mr. Hayes.
Looking at the photo, I will correct my prior statement about my STR not having been painted since new. The bike was red when I bought it in 79. When I got it back (in 81) from the scum bum who stole it, it was as noted in the photo, stripped of the red paint with spots of white and/or silver spray bomb marks and the broken off seat mast.
Now about that milk crate. That is an un restored survivor "crate edition"....
And behind that "SE Blue" garage door might be an item or two....

A friend of mine and I bought 2 new frames in late 79/early 80 and took them straight to the platers to have them chromed. Somewhere in Nor Cal(Vacaville area) there may be a couple of early chrome frames floating around. I don't know if they were mild steel or Chromoly, I think one was originally red and the other brown.

Rich, I stand corrected. WOW. If you look at Waza's there are no holes and his has the braces. Weird. Wonder when that started.
FL BMX COP, please tell me you are going back to hot pink for the color.
Curt, I'm pretty sure that broken junk frame is useless, so go ahead and send it to me. Throw in the NOS crate if you must.
#00157 - originally red under multiple layers of spraybomb. i plan to restore it back to red at ssome point, with the same parts.

There's one I have never seen before. Jeesh Tim................. nice. I'd have a hard time redoing that, though red was definately seen way less than SE blue.
So as far as mild steel frames we have Tim, Curt, Stevenbven so far? I know member "outfront" has a mild steel one too. I posted pics for him awhile back but can't find the pics now. Has anyone seen him around lately?

A note or two about forks.
I do not recall seeing the BMX innovation stickers on Cycle pro forks in 79-80. Is it possible that this happenned in 81-2 just prior to the release of the first gen landing gear forks?
And if so, and somebody was really ERA correct, the first gen (79,80) STRs,Quads and/or PKs would have either cycle pro or the earlier Skyway Tuff Forks but with out the sticker?
The BMX Action article above June 1980 might support this. I do not think the BMX Innovations fork stickers are/were on that bike.
Any thoughts? Photos? that I am on to something or just off base.

Well Curt. I have a whole slew of Stu pics from 1979 riding both a PK and his STR-1...all shots have the SE bmx Innovations stickers on them. I dont know why some do and some dont. I would think they would make sure to have the Innovations forks featured in their ads instead of the cycle pros, but yeah, they go back at least as far as 1979.

As far as the Landing Gear deacls on my forks - I would say they are wrong, wrong, wrong!
Likewise the die cut headtube decal.
Probably just Art21 repros.

In an attic?! I've been hangin' around this site for four years now and haven't ever "found" anything significant.

Curt, I've seem magazine articles with both the BMX Innovation decals on some (up real high like Tim's are on his Quad) and also have seen SE bikes with CP forks that still had CP decals on them. The Innovations decals were offered as far back as the Tuff Forks. My Tuff forks on my JU6 were originally white with Skyway Tuff Fork decals but , Tim's Tuff Forks on his JU were NOS with original paint and decals on them and they are baby blue with the blue BMX Innovations decals on them.
PKRipped, how come you have posted other bikes on this thread but have not posted your own yet?
akcuda, HOLY CRAP that bike is stellar. I seriously wish I would have went that color instead of baby blue. I struggled and decided baby blue. Who powdered yours?

n2o, Ya it's sick isn't it. You know how it unfolds. Some guy that his wife works with says he use to race BITD and thinks he still has a couple of his old bikes in the attic if Don wanted to check them out. He bought this Quad AND some other good stuff for less than what a nice pair of tires costs. (not at liberty to discuss that any further but I'm wayyyyyyyy jealous). He's a great guy though so I'm happy for him.

Alex and Brian, I was aware that the SE BMX fork stickers were around and on Tuff forks among others.
What I am curious about is did Cycle Pro forks come new (from SE as an SE fork such as how the Tuff Fork came) with those stickers applied or were they installed after purchase by SE riders and/or teams?
And Alex, That blue STR, (very nice). It sounds like it came that way as purchased with the blue cycle pro forks. Did they have stickers at one time?
Brian, I need to check attics more often, jeeez what a score.
AKcuda and Tim, very well done.

Brian,
Mine (1092), has the vent holes inside the loops if that helps at all.
I squirted akcuda's 1 day before Rockford '05. It turned out pretty good! Heheh!
Andy,
mine was built just after seracingman's, and I've always figured it to be an '80. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.
