Full Version: My Christmas miracle...

...So I know I was born in California, or so I thought because of my decals. Okay maybe the idea of me was born there....and I was constructed in Japan? That is irrelevant right now.
I really came to life when I was completely assembled. I felt alive as soon as the last bolt was snugged up. Excited and happy I waited in anticiaption of a great new life.
Repairs would come into the place and tell me great stories of how they were raced. Others would come in and say how their owners would do tricks on them. It did not matter to me what I was to do as long as I was out of here.
Man enters and explains that he needs a good quality bicycle for his son. I was chosen after many minutes of careful consideration. Overjoyed I jumped into the back of his pick-up truck heading to my new home.
Billy was excited to see me and imediately showed me the way around town. A few days later we went out again. I was a little dissapointed as our riding was just careful short trips to the local stores and to see his friends. I really wanted to race....
I was hung up in the place where the cars parked and was reminded of this as they entered and excited daily. I used to make this a game to see how many days in a row I would sit. From single days it went into what seemed like many more. I would loose track of how many, to be woken up only occasionally.
Man enters...same man that purchased me a while ago. Seems a little odd how the man is definately older, much older. I wonder how long I have been sleeping? Takes me down from the wall...I'm thinking we are going for a ride! Sitting by the curbside I can't figure why I'm just laying here?

I arrived home the day after Christmas and imediately checked the phone for messages. Chris this is John...I think I found one of those bikes you like. Give me a call when you get in.
When I returned Johns call he informed me that he found a GT(good call Paulie) Magnum in the trash. He then proceeded to tell me it is chrome and blue. I jumped into my truck and headed over to Johns....

I had to correct John and let him know I am not a Magnum..... ...I am an 85 Mach One!!!
I know it sounds crazy but for me (Chris) this really was my Christmas miracle as many of you know I have been actively trying to find this bike for a long time. To find it in the trash is crazy!!!!

Whats the bike thinking now??

I know I will need some new decals to be as worthy as the other GT's hanging around me. That should be easy from AJK. I would like to consider getting my original dark blue 890's and Tech 3 levers back...anyone consider a trade for the used Nippon rear with NOS lever in the pic? Chris could throw in a front NOS matching caliper without the lever?? Other than that I have some new grips on the way... a more thorough cleaning. I would also consider trades for darker blue axle nuts as Chris only had the light blue available(3/8th's 26T).
Thanks for reading as I know this is not an exciting bike for some. For me I eyeballed this bike bitd and should have bought it back then and almost did. Just glad to have it now.

...and that's an all Chrome-Moly, USA made frameset, being an '85. Nice score!
rob_lewis
Fantastic find!! For an '85, I think it would also have a front brake.

Wooooooow!!! Rad bike and a great story!!! I know squat about GT's, but I've always admired them. It's still early in the morning (out here in California), and I'm still feeling groggy... but, if my eyes aren't playing tricks on me and the tread pattern on those tires really do say GT, that's just too sick!!!

Thanks for sharing!

That is an amazing find, and in the trash no less. I guess that old saying is true:

"one man's trash is another man's treasure"

That era GT's are my favorite, anything from 84-86 reminds me of my old ride and the good times we had together!
