Gangster Garage
Greetings All,

You don't know me, but since I discovered this site a few months back (and rediscovered my passion for BMX), I've enjoyed reading many of the threads. The collective BMX knowledge of the members of this site is amazing. Also, it's just waaaaay too cool that many of the racing legends found in the pages of BMXA are also members here... Rad!!!

One of my New Year's resolutions is to get back on a BMX track after a 30+ year absence. While I rode my bike practically every day on our local dirt trails and home made plywood jumps, I "officially" raced at a real BMX track only once BITD, when a friend's Mom drove us out to a track in Vallejo, CA... she was a pretty cool single Mom... she bought Paul (her kid) a red anodized FMF w/silver Arayas... not a bad set-up! Anyhow, I finished 3rd in my first moto, 1st in my second moto, made my main... and upon landing the first big jump on the track, I had a gnarly beef when my bars slipped aprox. 90 degrees fwd. in my Tuf Neck stem (I thought that wasn't supposed to happen!), resulting in one very ugly (but probably pretty entertaining for the spectators) DNF... Sheesh!

Fast fwd 30+ years...

My current local ABA track is Santa Clara, CA PAL (Police Athletic League). I'd like to race my same old 70's Mongoose Motomag (with Tuf Neck bolts torqued down corrrectly this time! LOL) I hope they'll let her/us on the track. I'll be sure to give her a top to bottom tune-up first. She has her same exact parts on her from BITD, and she's still hanging upside down from a rafter in my parents' garage... untouched since around '79. I need to redeem myself from DNF'g during that main... if not for myself, at least to make it up to the bike!

Sorry for the long post and my rambling... I'd just like everyone to know that you have all, in some way, helped rekindle a BMX flame that is very dear to me... it's truly my privilege to be a member here.

BTW, I was poking around in my parents' garage the other day and I came across a dusty old box that I had pretty much forgot about. I took a few pics... Enjoy!

Wishing everyone a gnarly New Year!

Ronnie

Welcome Ronnie. Sweet Mags !! Put some pics up of your ride .

I can fully relate to your comment of ""I'd just like everyone to know that you have all, in some way, helped rekindle a BMX flame that is very dear to me... it's truly my privilege to be a member here.""

I found this site over a year ago, it it all came back too me also. The mine was more of a kick in the butt then a rekindling . In the past year I've revisited my past , in a sick way ,

with two more builds comming this year (another Floval Flyer, and another Profile ), the sickness has run deep.

Thank you all
Reilley1

Thanks for the warm welcome! It's my pleasure to be in such good company. Special shout out to Reilley1 (Rick). Over the past few months, I've totally enjoyed every single one of your OG builds. I'm always amazed at how much knowledge from that era you've retained.

Okay, I went over to the parents' house tonight and took down the ol' Goose from where she's been sleeping in the rafters. Unfortunately, by the time I got her down, it was too dark to take any decent pics, so it'll probably be a day or two before I have pics of her to post.

I was able to her out for a couple of quick laps around the block tonight, and it was "just like riding a bike"... The bike felt really good (at least, to me) and the handling was exactly how I remembered.

BTW... I posted a question in the BMX Racing section the other day (here, on vintage), and someone brought up an interesting point regarding my idea of racing an old school BMX bike.

I respect all the advancements of a modern day BMX bike (materials, technology, geometry, etc.). That being said, I was hoping to be able to take one or two of my old school rides out on the track. I'm not super competitive, I'd be happy to be the last person out of the gate and finish in last place, keeping out of everyone's way. The last thing in the world I want is to injure myself or a fellow racer... especially, using equipment that's outdated, and perhaps shouldn't be on the track.

Advice/opinions/suggestions from any of you would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your input, and my apologies for the long-winded post.

What the...? Magnesium burns an amazing bright glowing light. I know because my buddy, Dave Sieber, decided to find out with his front Webco Mag one day when he was curious after we told him that Magnesium was highly flamable. That was around 1977 or 78. Glad you didn't burn yours. Heck you didn't even use yours! ....but I shall now digress and just say, "Welcome to this rad site my friend".
