Hello, came accross this old Mongoose for sale. Its in rough shape and needs work for sure. Its been stored away for many years and has plenty of rust. Anyway, I am looking for a whole new project, something different to work on and have fun with. Nothing to go nuts on and blow all my money on. I always wanted a Mongoose as a kid and now I think I have found one. But do you think its worth it? Would you restore this bike? Keep it as is? Or maybe pass on it?
Also what kind of Mongoose is this? And idea of year? How about those wheels? Any body have decals for this bike if I did go ahead and get it? Sorry for all the questions, I'll probably end up buying this bike. If anybody cares to add anything, please feel free to do so. Thank you

nice bike ..i like the yellow.....i guess being a motomag bike you need motomags....might cost you some money.......you can find new forks and cranks on the bay.....the rest is clean and paint. It all depends on how far you want to go on a (RESTORE).......me i don,t go crazy

I would guess that goose to be a 79. W/Out serial numbers can't tell but looks like it has a brake tab. It does not have to have Motomags, I have heard of lots of the "Motomag" bikes coming wit tuf's ordifferent rims. It is up to you but the concencus here is usally leave it alone and just clean up the rust (go to restoration fourm and search oxalic acid) and regrease everything.

That bike has character. The seat, sprocket, pedals and seat clamp show that it went right through the heart of the BMX era. I bet it was a good bunch of lawn mowing, staring in the magazines and wishing that finally produced those gems on that bike.
If the kid had any more savings back then you'd have found a tuf neck on that bike instead of the double clamp.
I agree, a good rust cleanup and regrease and she's a beauty.

I'd grab it. I believe that could be restored at a reasonable cost-especially if you do a "survivor" restoration and just concentrate on getting it cleaned up.

If you take that bar pad off, you will probably find a nice survivor top decal as well. Nice color scheme. Many gooses camed with tuffs instead of motomags.

If those wheels are original, the bike should be a late `81/early `82 based on the wheels & rear dropouts. Check out the `81 catalog & `82 specs in the BMX Museum section above. Bill's decal sets are the only way to go:

My 79 Mongoose came with Tuff 1's. To bad I don't have it anymore. I would go for it. Looks like it would be sweet all fixed up.

Here is a blue one I finished on Xmas eve this year... This is the bike I have been wanting to build for a while and yes the chain is now on. I decided to finish two more while I was at it - the blue one - powdercoat, the white one - powdercoat, the Blue Team - ALL NOS parts!
They are fun to build and will always be a staple of ture mass produced BMX. I think everyone had a Mongoose at some point!

Grab it! The double clamp and (possibly) Roger Decoster forks make it a better than average find. Should be an easy and fun restoration.

That bike is killer! I'd nab it.
I know I'm probably wrong, but that looks like a VDC sticker on the bars?
Addicks chainwheel, Kingsbury Nylon pedals, vintage Hunte Wilde grips. Forks and neck are nice too. Let's get a close up shot on the forks?

Hi, thanks for all the info. Its a nice little bike. I am going to see if I can pick it up this weekend depending on how work goes and with New Years coming up. The guy selling it seems to have increased the price a bit....I'm hoping to get it for 50 bucks or less. Wish me luck. If I can pull this off, I'll need to get in touch with some of you guys for stickers. This bike would be a very low budget restoration job as I don't have much to spend. Thanks for all the help. Wish me luck

That bike is completely bad-*** just the way it is!!! I wouldn't "re-do" anything, just de-rust it and clean it up.
Finding bikes like that is like opening a time capsule, to me anyway...

Nice find, looks like it has most of the original parts - including the wheels and grips maybe?
My good bud Jimmy got that exact same bike in '79 - brings back memories of he and I doing kickouts on each other in the slushy spring snow. We blasted each other until we were soaked from head to toe.
I would keep it like it is. That blue moto-mag looks pretty nice, but I'm finding that things are often better with the patina still intact.

Bad news dudes, its a no go on the sale of this Goose. The owner got greedy and changed terms of the deal and the price has skyrocketed to 1,500 USD for the bike. I was upset, but what could I do? So, I just walked a way. It was supposed to be an Econo-project bike. If I were to pay 1,500 I would have gotten a few more bikes or something truly rare. That guy is nuts. 1,500 USD for that Goose. Sorry I won't be working on this project as I was hoping to do and share with others. Maybe later on in the future, thanks again
Wow!!
$50 - $1500!??!
Granted, all told it would have been an absolute steal at $50. I might have even felt a little guilty taking it for that much. But come on... $1500? It's a cool old 'Goose and a good restoration project but maybe for a couple hundred $$$. I'd like to see the guy who agrees to the sellers asking price.
Sorry it didn't work out for you.

Now that Bill has the Mongoose decal spectrum covered, it should be a rite of initiation to HAVE to own a Mongoose to be a VBMX member. Nickel gooses rock

Thanks Reece, you got mail
I agree with you there BridgeCityBikes, A Mongoose is a bike everybody should own one time in their life. I never got my chance and always wanted one, so I was excited when this Goose showed up. At least there are some good people here who might be able to help out. Other bikes I have always wanted to own were a Redline, Diamond Back and a Hutch. I finally got the Hutch. Would like a few more to finish off my collection. All my bikes will be riders.
