As cool as that bike is, I gotta tell ya... That's not a second gen P.K. More like a 4th or so, maybe later...
1st Gen = looptail
2nd Gen = no looptail, straight chain stays
3rd Gen = curved chain stays
4th Gen = built in seat clamp
I might of missed a generation or two along the way, I'm not a P.K. expert, but those are the 4 distinct varieties I am aware of.
Not knocking your build at all, beautiful bike, in fact that is the one I prefer most out of all the P.K.'s been looking to acquire one of those myself some day... I'd like to get a XL model with the built in seat clamp...

Nice. I just posted my same frame/fork combo down on the freestyle section. Did you have trouble getting clearance between the cranks and frame? I have flights on mine and had to get a longer spindle made.
Sprinter, that does look like a straight chainstay model, making it a second generation.

I thought it looked straight as well.
The second gen frames had a built in seat clamp.
Really cool ride!

Sprinter, your info is incorrect.
1979-1984 looptails
1985 (which this frame is) straight chainstays and integrated seat clamp. ALL PK's after the looptail from 1985-1999 had the integrated seat clamp. There was only ever 2 PK "gens". First was the looptail and second was the non loop with the integrated seat clamp.
1986-1999 curved chainstays with integrated seat clamp. The XL frames became available in the late 80's through 99. The 89-92 frames had the pitbull mounts. 93 had both the pitbull and top guides. Some 94's had pitbull and canti mounts. By 95 they were canti mount only frames and also in the 95-96 model years switched to the 1 1/8" threadless forks which ran through the end of American SE in 1999.
Fuji SE started in 2003.
As far as cranks fitting a PK, there should never be a need to have a longer spindle made for any three piece crank. With the Flights, you just have to use the provided spacers. I've had a total of 26 PK Rippers in the last 18 months, of all years and ran 3 piece cranks on all of them. Hope this info helps.

Actually, the straight chainstay 2nd gen PKs were considered the '86 model although production began in later '85.

Akcuda, is right they made the PK Looptail up til mid 85 and started the new design in mid 85 to 86. They also used the 85 vertical stamped forks with 3 holes on this model. They soon found that the chainstay design did not work with some cranks and late 86 changed to the Quad design chainstays. Also as for the forks they changed the stamping to horizontal two hole design. Just My 2cents

Just for clarification, the new design (straight chainstay version), first came with non stamped Landing Gear.

Yes, the straight chainstay model was 85-86 but only considered one model year. Sorry it was late last night when I posted. As far as the Unstamped forks, Iceman, I believe you are wrong. Yes the unstamped forks were used with all the looptails from 81-84, but mid year in 85 when the straight stay frame came out, it was introduced with the matching one year only vertical stamped SE forks. When the frames changed again to the curved (quad) chainstays, they switched the stamping to the horizontal stamped forks, which SE is still using today. SE Mark has pics of all three. Maybe he'll post them.

Iceman, I have a 85 all orginal one and it came with the vertical stamped 3 hole LG. Also the 85 Quads came in the same way with Vertical stamp. I spoke to OM himself on this when I was restoring my PK and he told me about the forks being correct.

SE Mark, I do believe yours came with the verticle stamped forks, and yes they are correct, but my brother akcuda has an original 85 straight stay that came with the unstamped forks.
All I am trying to point out, is that there are some out there that came with unstamped forks, even though there may only be a few.

Anything is possible from the story's I have heard about how everything was run bitd at SE. Mix and matching parts was common.

You know, Iceman. You could be right too. I bought a late 84 looptail PK that was built by the LBS for the owners son and it had the original forks on it which were the new for 85 vertical stamped forks. It obviously went both ways during the transition from loops and unstamped to 2nd gens and vertical stamped.

I would think each design change would be a diff generation... I just can't see lumping all P.K.'s after the looptail together as 2nd generation models. Granted they didn't change as radically as the move away from the looptail...
If that holds true for the P.K. Ripper, then does that mean all Quadangles after the looptail were 2nd generation as well?
I would think at least 4 gens on the P.K.
Looptail
Non loop - straight stay
Non loop - curved stay
1 1/8 threadless
Not sure if there would be multiple gens for the brake changes. But those 4 designs are distinct changes.
I'd think at least 4 gens of Quads as well.
Looptail
Non loop - Reynolds
Non loop - traditional Quadangle seat stays, not at the top of seat tube like the Reynolds frames
Aluminum fat tube
Just my 2 cents I guess...

sprinter, there are more Quads then you listed. There where 3 kinds of looptails, 82 chromoly Reynolds design, Reynolds 531,
85 Chromoly,Mid/late 80's w/canti mount brakes and Aluminum Fat downtube. I think with the PK's it's more that they are all Aluminum and they really don't have a Great design change other then 85/86 and that was the base for the whole 2 Gen of the PK's. Even the 93-94 changes with brakes, Head size are not a great big design change from the 87 2nd Gen PK.
Just my 2 cents on why they group them together.

Thanx for that little tidbit. I didn't realize it worked the other way as well. (Stamped on looptail).
