here's a old school question for you. I am looking to build up 77 Schwinn Comp Scrambler. Did anyone use the 20 x 1 3/8 wheels BITD? as in, take wheels off a FAstback Schwinn? I know folks used to use the rear wheels off Krate bikes because they were wide(s-2) and had a freewheel. BUt anyone ever heard of using Fastback Schwinn s-5 rims? Also, DID you guys ever see 28 hole rims used? I have several vintage 70's low flange and high flange hubs but they are 28 hole. Also, one werid idea is to use the wheel off a exercycle-has a freewheel laced up to it and its all Schwinn parts(has a steel s-7 rim). I want to use ALL Schwinn parts(except use a Ashtabula fork...you know keep it in the family.

If you are building something around 1977 you are probably gonna wanna use 36 spoke wheels. The other wheel you are talking about I don't know about but I doubt it and other wheels were available.

BITD, My Kawasaki came factory w/28-hole rims. They lasted about 1 day before they bent! I replaced my 28-hole rim w/a Motomag I

I had a fastback with the skinny 10speed type tires on my conversion bike. but they'd have been trashed if I'd jumped or did kickouts.
at that time we were into time trials around the playground and who could wheelie the longest.
that huge front sprocket allowed me to smoke the other kids on the multi block races.

As soon as big jumps over the ditches and kickouts/bunny hops became popular in my area, the heavy duty femco's magically appeared, then tuff 1's and araya freewheels. who brought the femco's to town in used condition is still a mystery to me.

if it were a pre 74 bike I would say yes to the 28 spoke rims. 36 spoke wheels were not yet widely used by most kids. they just made due with what came stock on the sting ray until they were destroyed. otherwise 36 spoke S-2 rims front and rear. if you do happen to use an S-7 front I just happen to have some 20x1 3/4 Schwinn tractors for it.

this is how I roll!

Those schwinns are pretty sweet BUT, I'd like to see the rest of that JUDGE!! My friend's uncles in Megs county Ohio were Pontiac freaks back in my High School days. They got me hooked, cruisin the dirt roads in those beasts was so much fun.

I would think that the s-5 would be to narrow in 77. Most would have used s-2's or s-7's. S-2 were good cause you could get knobby tires easy. Is it my turn now?

my thinking is that it would be definitely out of the box thinking. All my days as a racer I was known around my town for different set-ups...not as nuts as say racing with a 3 speed Sturmey rear hub but a little out there. I want to build a "what-if" type racer. Think vintage 77 middleweight set- for a 10 yr old maybe? I know I would really need Araya 7a shouldered rims to be real race accurate...but I want to build a ALL Schwinn products racer that looks like it could have been maybe a company test bike/dealer special from the parts bin for a lucky son of a Schwinn dealer. I LOVE resto showroom floor restorations too but in this case I want to be different. I KNOW it'll have the Schwinn Approved calipers taken from 5 and 3 speeds(rear only) and a Schwinn solo seat from the Varsity...rear wheel from a Schwinn Exercycle-28 hole s-7 steel knurl rim with freewheel Schwinn Approved Normandy hub. and a regular Stingray s-7 front. box bars, varsity trap pedals, Ashtabula fork, diamond Varsity cranks, small Varsity front sprocket(used stock on Comp Scramblers actually) heavy duty Schwinn gooseneck( used on exercycles I think?)-flamboyant red frame. I NEED the Competition Scrambler decals..nyone know of these to be found??

Hell why not! it's your bike. using period parts it's a custom "shoulda woulda coulda been" kind of project. I'll look around I might have some scrambler decals. Now that I think about it I have some NOS Schwinn approved Normandy hubs. I can even upgrade the stock 5/16th axle to a 3/8 slot cut Shimano heavy duty axle. I used this set up on my orange Sting Ray. it works sweet!
Hey I even have some nice used diamond cranks around here too.

You guys have inspired me. I have had an old frame lying around for years, and haven't done anything to it. I got a set of Ashtabula forks the other day on a frame I bought and have a couple of other parts that could find their way onto a bile like this. Looks like time to start a new project.
