Everyone keeps asking for more...
Same hill, different player.
I used to go to Saddleback on off weekends with my friends just to jump off this hill. I couldn't get enough. Could you?

Here is some video that has Ramo, Stu, PK and others that have piped in on this thread. Old, but I still enjoy it. BTW - I had to break it in two parts fro youtube...

Yamaha Gold Cup Pt 1

Yamaha Gold Cup Pt 2
Mike Welsh
Thanks Ben. I appreciate it. The Yamaha Gold Cup was my first race ever and I was completely clueless. I raced at the qualifier in San Diego and I forget which high school it was held at(Clairmont or Kearny?). I think I was 12 years old. I had those really short Schwinn cranks on my Stingray and ran a 36/18 for gearing (lol). I got smoked needless to say. Great experience though. I got fully into racing after that.

For the record, the Yamaha footage came from Scot B's company via Dave Clinton in 1999. It was not copied from Joe Kid or Jox/Jag which both have used footage from this event. The exact footage (in much higher resoltuion) is available for sale on one of the Jox Jag DVD's over to the left.

Isn't that lil ol Greg on the outside,#75. Or did you loan your helmet to someone? LOL
That almost looks like Liz on the inside. Wouldn't suprise me, she's headin fo rthe lead!!

Dennis, Bottema says "Hello". He says he saw you in the Orange truck recently.

His Dad found his Webco Frame. It was pre Webco Factory and was bought when he rode for Two Wheelers (Norwalk Biker Days). He wasn't a fan of the square frames.

You just can't hardly beat MM1s and Ashtabula on any given frame for cool. 417C looks like he has the magnesium versions.
The Red Baron
Ben, so Bottena is still in this area. I'm not sure what Jeff saw but it wasn't me. I still own the orange truck, but it has not been running for 3 years. Tell him to get to AZ in March and he'll see me for sure.

Dennis - I have his contact info. Email if you'd like it. He says he'd like to make it out there. Hopefully he does.

This is an amazing thread.
I started racing a little later in 1978.
The raw freshness of BMX.
Makes me wish I was 8 years older so I could've experienced this time period.
RAMO
So are we going to get confirmation #75 & #351? Greg, what say you?
Reilley1
Hillage and Liz Torres?

Edit..sorry didn't see DD's response

I think the guy in the bottom pic in the Moto Pro jersey is Dave Gane, he lived in Pleasanton Calif, same town as me, we used to ride together all the time though he was a year or 2 younger than me. He was always sponsored, I never was. he also rode for Panda for awhile at the same time Dave Busby rode for them.
The Red Baron
That picture of the starting hill from the top brings back fun memories. Spent the night there at a race, and after dark a bunch of us used the plywood from the starting gate to "surf" down the hill.
The start hill and 1st turn were cool, but the 2nd turn was wild. You crossed an old asphalt road and the track dropped away and turned left at the bottom. Very different and very cool.
Greg Hill
Hey guy's that's a cool pic but it's not me or Liz..Not sure who they are??
spike
BUMP!
Cash Matthews
Back on page 5, I think # 295 is either Benny Del Carpini or Mike Schmidt from Norwalk. Greg Hill, do you remember him? For some reason, when I think about old school, I think of Stu,Greg,Ramo,DD, and BDC!!!
The Red Baron
Cash, I do believe you could be right. That could be Benny. I think his career peaked right there at that moment in time.
Freeze frame and retire as the giant killer.
You also have to remember that Robert Fehd was a speed demon at WSA. He either helped build the track or showed up the next day because I think he was there from day one. He lived only a couple of miles away.
I don't think Robert earned that #8, I think he was the 8th person to sign up.
DD
Cash Matthews
That is a cool pic. #8x is about to experience the joy of catching a rattrap pedal on a rubber tire. He also is leading Stu at that moment. His helmet and jersey say B&B Racing or something like that. Any clue who 8X is? Wait, is THAT Rob Fehd?
Greg Hill
Rob Fehd was there from day 1 he was always 8X as far as I remember. Benny Del Carpini, man that guy was fast! So many fast riders from WSA BITD it was amazing. Schmidt or Schmitty as he was called always had a big smile on his face, you knew he just loved being there. Im talking as a 10 year old kid that took so many mental notes growing up racing WSA. I have never really said this but Dennis Dain was always there always helping me and teaching me. If there was a riding session going on everyone would be having fun and DD would always come over and give me direction both in riding and life..I love this guy! God bless you Red! BA

I got word Rob Fehd is realy looking forward to seeing you guys in AZ. Real busy guy but wants to take a step back in time with some old friends. Confirmed showing.
RAMO
I remember Benny Del Carpini by name, don't recall him being a terror on the track though. Was he in the older class with us?
Cash Matthews
Ramo:

I met him on our first Cali. trip in 75. He raced at WSA but I remember him being in the class above mine with Tinker, Raymer, and the rest of the guys. I was always one age class below the big guns back then. I remember Matt Raymer beating Tinker in his first moto at WSA in his first race on the track. I think Benny raced with you and Stu and DD back then.
Cash Matthews
So, I just got off the phone with Benny Del Carpini's mother. I love the internet! She was extremely cool and remembered all of you guys and said she had lots of pics from back in the day.

I called Benny personally and left a message. I hope we have another new member shortly!
Greg Hill
Right on Cash, now that is proactive..Make it happen man!
Greg Hill
Benny raced for Whitney Marine, Don Bradshaw was the TM..
Cash Matthews
We've been iced in for 3 days. I have time on my hands!!! Next I am going to find Pat Ryan and Randy Olsen!
Gary Haselhorst
Hill, Cash, Ramo, Stu and Dennis as for gathering and inviting anyone to AZ you guys got the OK, go with it. I gotta start working on the details for everyone.
Reilley1
How about Dan Loftus? I contacted a few unnamed WSA/Yarnell dinosaurs and should get a response soon
BenOr
I think Loftus was at the Perris event in 1999.
Greg Hill
How about Brian Lewis? Utterback you can get in touch with Lewis huh? LOL
Reilley1
Utterback can bring the hair brush...
Gary Haselhorst
Utterback is supposed to be in Tucson. Is there any update. I've seen him in here but have not seen him post.
Jeff Utterback
Still waiting to hear from a car owner (damn owners, always leaving the driver hanging).

Funny thing is the owners all say that about us drivers...

Muxter had Brian Lewis' contact info. saw him at a Gonzo BBQ a few years back. still buff, still arrogant. I still gave him ****...
Cash Matthews
I spoke with Benny Del Carpini tonight. What a nice guy. He came onto Vintage and had a look around. Come on in,Bennie!
The Red Baron
Cash, you mentioned Pat Ryan. Is that the Pat that raced against Steve Skiebel and Ronnie Ames? If so, I have a great story about him...

DD:
Yep, Flyin Pat Ryan. He was in the White Whale for the 76 tour and he was a funny little kid. That was when Kenny Roberts made a bmx frame and Pat was co sponsored by them for that tour. Did he ride hacks with Greg at some point?

It is hard to figure that Pat is around 40 now!

Let's get some more cool pics in here....please.
