Great Scot, what would that chain wheel size be on the blue mini?
Awwwwwwwwwwwsome collection indeed!

the mini has a large freewheel so it's not as big as it looks.

You all have your eyes open. The gearing on the Pit bike and the Blue Mini are equal to a 45-16 20" tire. Not too bad, but very easy to push a bigger gear, less resistance, light weight chain. Big boys couldn't use this type of equipment. It allowed many wins on these bikes. I have to thank Dr. Frankenpeper for posting the pics for me. These pics are the set that is not on display. They just hang around in my house. There are a total of 16 in the collection. Did you see the pedals? We used to fly to many races- the JMC Bike Bags allow to find your gear at any airport, curtiousy of Jim himself. I still think that the DY is the best designed bike I have ever ridden. Remember to keep your eyes open, I just bought that cruiser for $1000. It came with a Factory helmet and some other parts that I have sold. Net price in the bike $650. Thats a deal. I will be sending more pics later, as the collection grows. Like stated before, nothing JMC is for sale from my family. God bless Jim Melton, he's the best.

I noticed the pedals on the AP (Drool)! Are those just the cages or are they complete with the bodies too? Would really like to see more pics and hear a little more of the history too! Thanks for sharing!

My little sister wanted to add that she won the ABA Grands on that blue one. It was the last race she rode that bike before going to the next size up. My dad was a machinist and made a lot of the parts on the bikes. Custom 7075 axels, drilled out cranks, homemade bottom brackets. I have his shop now and still make many custom parts for others. My dad believed that speed was directly related to weight and resistance, but what did he know? Kelly was National #1, World #1, State #1, etc. all on JMCs. I won a few races myself.

what kind of pedals are on that blue mini?are they custom?
BMX TEACHER
Dec 3 2006, 07:12 PM
The blue mini has "Hare" pedals w/ 1/16" roll pins added for traction, the AP has original Titron Bear Traps, and the DY & Cruiser have Demcos. Not a bad collection themselves.

I've gotta ask...how did you arrive at $1,000 for the cruiser, helmet and 'other parts'? That seems like an in-between price to me. I mean, if the person KNEW what they were selling the price would have been triple that....and if the seller was clueless, then he would never dream to ask for $1,000.
How did you arrive at that sale price? Just curious...
ULTRA-cool stuff!!!!

Wow Tommy & all the times we talked we never talked about old school bike collecting!? Now that is strange!

How was the question? My family helped this rider and family out when they first got started in bmx. We also was there when they got this bike in '84. He always told me that he would never sell it to anyone but someone in my family. I ran into him when I was buying my new Avalanche. He was in charge of the finance Dept. We got to talking and he asked if I would like to buy his old bike. I offered $1000 cash and he dropped it off that night. I was not expecting all the other stuff. He didn't want the other stuff so he through it in. Total price for both $31,500. I stold them both and I am proud of it. LOL
As for collecting, most people believed that my dad and I had a stash, just nobody ever got to see it. JMCs are not the only thing we collect.

$31,500?
Typo?
I've been in a few situations where I had paid for one bike or part and the seller has kindly given me 'other stuff' they had laying around for no charge, just to offload it.
MikeStevens
Dec 4 2006, 04:56 PM
I think he is saying $31,500 for the JMC Cruiser and the Avalanche he was buying when he ran into his old friend.
If not that is alot of coin for some "other stuff".

Although... if you made it into his dad's basement, it might very well contain $31 k in JMC's.
Funny Tommy, I was looking at these pics, saying, I remember that bike, and that one... and, etc. Good times.
People if you can pay attention to the pedals, the gears, the cranks, everything is precision machined. Tommy's father 'Doc' was the local genius who helped many local kids at the tracks, and dropped bits of zen wisdom all over the place.

Mr. S, you wouldn't know where to put them all. Ken, you should see some of the new stuff I have been able to make for the bikes since I took over my Dad's shop. You should here Kelly and my mom when they come over. "I remember..., Oh I remember when I won... on that..." The memories come rolling in. Remember that we had to write down every race/ result? Well I have my mom's old log books. At one point Kelly had won 92 races in a row. The bike is not pictured here, it was the orange JMC w/ the 52 tooth front sprocket. Was it the rider or the bike? Let the voting begin.

Does Kelly still have that squeaky voice and still always try to fight with the boys? Just kidding, I'm just going reminiscing.

I was going to ask about the Orange JMC.
Yeah, I certainly remember the log books and all of the races. I think my father still has some in house. I'm sure he would find a place in the house to put the bikes. He was trying to track down my old frames, JMC's Bandito, Cook Bros. he wanted to have a little collection.
Good Times.

The family says hi back to you all, and Kelly wrestles with the girls these days. If you have to know th '57 vette is now in the barn. Remember I moved to the outside of town. 3 Acres, hills, trees, grass, lots of room to play with my toys. Of course I moved Dad in with me. Life is good.

57 Vette? Is it a Fuel Injected car? Been into 1956-57 Vettes since I was 6. My family has owned 3 Fuel cars, and now a tube framed 57 with a ZR1 motor.

That's a motherscratchin good lineup there.
I remember seeing a JMC mini or 3.1 featured in BMXAction that had the drilled out gear all over the place. The article mentioned that the dad was the moto maniac behind the machining etc., any connection? I think the frame had a black/blue two tone fade front to back.
Nice one RIPPER, way to bring this batch to the front. And Tom, nobody asks the tough questions like you man! LOLOLOL

I remember that article, the one with the blue two tone finish was a shadow. The drilled out one was a separate bike/article, I think Jason Roos bike, not sure.

I don't remember the article, but I do know that many of the JMC riders' dads used to inquire info from my dad about what they could do to lighten the bike without loosing the strength. 1985 is when Jim started building the Justin Roose mini and many were trying to see why Kelly went so fast. They started copping the drilling out of many parts on their bikes. But, we were the first to do it. Oh, my vette has a 350ci w/ 350 hp from a '70 vette, w/ 15" wide tires all the way around. There were modifications made here too. LOL

I think PK Ripper is right about that ride being a Shadow. That bike was just riddled with bore outs as I remember, like Sonny Corleone couldn't find a driver.
Good to see that family of JMC all together, good to "meet" you Teach, and yes God Bless Mr. Melton.
