Cyclo-Cross was my first sponsor and that front suspension add on was a lemon. I think the only time I ever had it on my bike, unfortunately, was at the first state championship race at B.U.M.S. in 1973 (?). Side note, owner of Cyclo-Cross was Ben Holt former husband of Elaine Holt who started BMX News and the company's main product was full size gas tanks that acted more like a top tube bar protector.

Yes, some of the Jurrasic frames look like Huffy's and probably just as strong. How long did that weld last behind the seatpost?

I laughed back then and thanks for another laugh on the Moto-Glide. Glad to hear it was a lemon...what standards did they have?

Raced MX but when on my Stingray I made a ton of MX sounds...thought it helped me clear those triples once!

On Any Sunday coverted me from MX to BMX since my Mom couldn't afford MX. Wanted to be a MX superstar but without the $$$ BMX was the best sport for me. Without it I wouldn't be who I am today. So many great memories, people/places/friendships, and now interacting with them after so many years of not seeing each other.

Even though "organized" cruiser racing was started in '79, cruisers have always been a part of BMX...we rode what we could get our hands on!

MX in BMX was gnarly, what happened to that? The tracks are so fast and precise, it takes the gnarliness out since almost everything has been refined so much. Racing is gnarly today in today's terms but will never compare to the gritty days we had.

I think all of us kids had our part in this awesome sport and some more than others as noted in the publications throughout the years. Joe Kid covers that well but there are a lot of guys and gals that have done a ton to get where the sport is today. I'm just glad to be involved from the beginning and still able to ride/share the history of BMX to all that I meet.

I can assure you if I was not saying it, I was thinking "Man this thing is flying down this long downhill!" Looking back after having 30 years to ponder it, I can't beleive the ten speed front axle I laced on to that balloon tire wheel did not snap. We abused our 26" and 24" bikes something horrible. Goes to show how well/over engineered Schwinn bikes really were.

RL, you are right. It took a lot of kids and support from their parents and other adults to make BMX such an exciting sport. I am glad I was where I was at the time I was there.

I had to post the response by one of our British cousins over at Rad BMX..

quote:
Really excellent pictures, but someones got to say it - there's some ugly f-rs in them isn't there?
To all the cats who were there at the begining like Tom, Sod, Mike Rush, Tom Welsh and never really got any coverage. My respects.

I agree on all points. On Any Sunday is in heavy rotation here. I want to roost some berms!
