Just a shot in the dark, but I'm gonna say it's a Californian. Crazy, I know, but that's the way I roll.
Seriously, it's either a late `84 or early `85. The `84's had a sticker for the head tube and the `85's used a badge.
Did ya spot that from the tree stand?

The serial # won't tell you anything besides the year, and this one proves that that isn't foolproof either.
Other than the tubing diameter & rear brake bridge holes on the Pro Class and some Supergooses and tubing wall thickness of the Pro Class' there isn't anyway to tell what model a looptail `goose is without it's stickers. That's why you see every naked looptail `goose on ebay advertised a Pro Class or Californian. The components used on the the M1/Expert/Californian/some Supergoose are what make the differences in models. There are also trimoly/full chromoly variations of the Experts & Californian's, and without the top tube or seat post sticker, there isn't anyway to tell what it is. Clear as mud?

Exactly.......
However, that sticker also says Chatsworth & 1983 on it and the S# is saying it's an `85. Mongoose moved to Moorpark in `83/`84, and I believe only the early `83's should have a Chatsworth sticker. Sometime in the last 22ish years someone could have put that wrong year sticker on an Expert to "upgrade" it.
VROBB, does the seatpost sticker say "chromoly mainframe" or "chromoly frame" under the Maurice logo? If it's "chromoly mainframe", that doesn't jive with the top tube sticker and I would say the sticker set was changed at one time.

chromoly mainframe.......
my point exactly, could have been restickered
if I put f-350 badges on my f-250.......will it make it a f-350?

Only if you change the springs too.
I would say call it what you want. All other components point to a Californian, regardless of year. An `85 M1 or Expert would have had a 5-spoke one-piece sprocket and Pro Steel wheels (the cheaper steel, coaster brake version of the alloy Pro Class wheels).
The brakes look to be painted/PC'd grey, which aren't correct either, and probably came off a different bike. I think from `85 and up (for sure `86 & up) it should have MX 1001/MX 901 calipers. You'll need a headtube badge as well-there's probably a couple 1/16" holes for the rivets under the sticker in the center of the headtube.

Or clean it up and ride it as is....

yea the parts in my opinion would lead to believe its a cali........don't think the brakes were painted, if so they replaced the decals in the process, they are marked 999a and 1000a
just took the bike apart, no holes for rivets in the headtube

The parts are all Cali as the EXPERT came with steel rims and asteel chainwheel etc.....It is a 1985 Californian.....

was there a difference in bar height tween a cali and expert........the bars on the "cali" or a little bit taller than my expert.....

My `86 catalog says:
Pro Class 24 = chromoly 5 1/2" x 28"
Eric Rupe (Pro Class) = chromoly 8 3/4" x 27"
Californian = steel 8 3/4" x 27"
Expert & M1 = steel 7" x 25 1/2"
My `83 & `84 catalogs are out on loan, so I don't have those exact specs, but I'm sure trhey are pretty close.

just measured my expert bars, height appears close, but length is 27, the cali bars are close to that height but measure 25 1/2.........but better inspection apperars they have been cut down.....and not that straight.....but ther is no 1 3/4 difference in the height of the two bars, I give it bout and inch difference.....
