I am starting to buy parts, many nos, to build a 1985 gt cruiser. All of my Redline cranks are accounted for on my 4 other bikes and the prices these days are through the roof for another set. I was thinking about grabbing a set of Profile made GT cranks. Any thoughts or other suggestions. I realize they may not be period correct but the bars will not be either.

I have an 85' GT cruiser an I am running Takagi one piece cranks. They are cheap, work well, and keep everything correct. In fact I have a set on the Hutch Cruiser as well.
Let's see some pics of the build process!!

well my opinion for whats its worth is to build it as era correct as you can.
i would rather use a part that is cheaper, than to use one from the wrong period.
that is my one beef with the builds ive seen. many people run out of time, money, ect and put on new school parts or parts that dont match the rest of the bike.
as for your parts situation i would go for the 1 piece cranks . i would look for some sr's.
they came on alot of 85 gts.

Use the one piece cranks. Plenty of riders back then used them. The nice thing about 1 piece cranks, is they all basically look the same, even though they aren't. I have some bent Ultra-max cranks I'm going to use on another bike I have. I don't like them but there time specific.

I have the Profile (GT stamped) on my 85 GT and my 85 Robinson. Im pretty stoked with them, even if they are a few years later. The 1 piece is a good option too. Ive got a 1 piece Takagi for my Profile, until I can afford some 1st or 2nd gens!

I agree with Tone.

I agree, put one piece cranks on. A lot of us ran one piece cranks back then, because 401's were too expensive, and one piece cranks were tough.
I raced both my 20 and 24 with one piece cranks right through my racing time, and they were never bent or broken.
I'm actually going to put one piece cranks back on my GT 26 soon, and I run one piece cranks on my 20" GT Pro.

One piece cranks are good. I used them BITD because Profiles and Flights were way out of my budget. I've got a set of nos SR Turbox and nos SR Cosmolite one piece cranks that I'm saving for future builds and they are light, strong, functional and look great.... I may even run them with a Tioga sealed bottom bracket set. Takagi's are nice too....I'm looking to buy a set of black 180's for an old beater/lake jumper.

That 24" looks SWEET!!!!!!! I've got a 82 GT 24 that i'm getting some work on atm....
Did you know that GT 24's were as light as many 20" frames??? Very Very cool !!!

Nice! Nothing like classic GT chrome and blue
Are those GT cruiser bars?

I hesitate to say it because I don't want to get bashed, but the bars are KOS replicas. They are actually nicer than the real KOS bars I have on my pl24. As I mentioned with the cranks, I had to cut costs on the bars too.
I am going to add some yellow to the build. I just got my yellow comp III's and my yellow terrycable should be coming. Everthing else will be blue or chrome.
I really don't know much about GT's. This is the first one I have owned. The frame does feel lite but I didn't realize it was similar to a 20." I know the hutch xl24 is super lite. Anyone know the weight difference?
I allways liked the GT redesign in 84 and am probably one of the few who like the 84-85 frames more than the orig. design. This one will have a set of 83 nora cup forks on it. You gotta love the solid dropouts.

Here is my '84 24" GT cruiser with a more rare '85 mini cruiser fork. Other stuff: GT 1st gen cruiser bars, DK cruiser stem, A'me duals, Uni Hammerhead, MX1000/tech 4, red Araya 7X, GT 1st gen black hubs, Redline 401's, Tuf Neck disc/chainwheel, SR Speedtrap pedals (sealed version), Tuf Neck Clamp, Izumi chain, BS Dirt Skirt. I need to take some outdoor pictures.
I like your blue setup so far.

WOW! Very sweet bike you you got there. I really like the black and red setup. How annoying is it that stem pads don't fit the inverted DK. I have the same stem but am considering using a GT mallet just because of the stem pad issue. My repop GT stem pad barely fits but it looks kinda stupid.
I will be rollin on GT hubs too.

yeah, those DK's are so thick on the bottom.
Oh well, maybe someday a mint red inverted tuf neck will drop in my lap free of charge. lol

Hehe, Andrew, I know what you mean about the inverted Tuf Necks. I need one for my 26, but I dont need another mortgage
I found on my 82 24, that an inverted neck (I ran a helix one for a while) with first gen bars, put the bars way too low. A standard tuf Neck positions them just right

Quick, destroy the bars before the repop squad catches up with you. JK. I'm assuming that they aren't engraved with Maurice, so they are easily identified as repops. I got one piece Tiogas on my '82. I agree with the SR's on it. The GT Series One 3 pieces are nice too. I think they are period correct. I'm gonna put some on my '86 World Tour when I get around to trading my brother some new cranks for his Hoffman.

Those Kos style bars look just right on that 85 cruiser. Real nice!
Dang Kyle, get some grips on that 82 24, and come riding with me!
Oh, wait.... You're in Okie, and I'm way down here in New Zealand

You are right on with repop squad. That is why I was afraid to mention it. They are not engraved.
I thought the gt 3 pc came out in 88 or 89. Can anyone confirm this for me. My knowledge of bmx ends in 1985.

I've been looking for grips. I want some black Mushrooms or Oakleys. I keep missing the Mushrooms and the only black Oakleys I can afford are 3's for $50. That seems pretty steep too. I guess I could always wrap 'em with black hockey tape or something. Still need pads too.
I'd love to go ride with you mcam. It would be nice to visit NZ some day.

Bring your bike You're more than welcome
Kyle, run some A'me rounds. I have them on my 83 Pro, and 81 26. I like them, and black ones would look cool.
I know what you mean about the cost of black Oakleys. Up there with the $113US chrome DC Hinged seat clamp that just sold. This hobby is going a little nuts

I've got a bit of a thing for GT cruisers and 20's to.
And you guys have made me even more to finish my GT's off.... Funny thing is that i've never even ridden a GT other than a new box series.. I'm just happy to know that in the early days GT only made full on race bikes...no street thrashers... You gotta love that!!

OK, I picked up some Oakley 3's. I had some on my GT standard bitd, so they'll be plenty nice.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...=ADME:B:EF:US:2It'll be ready for the Grand Nationals in Tulsa (except for the pads) at the end of the month. Here's a pic of how it looked last year at the Grands. It had yellow/gold stuff and Cook Bros longhorn bars on it.
