Full Version: Vintage restoration.,.,do you ride them ?

After being on this site for awhile, and seeing all of these restorations that are done on the vintage bikes, do you guys ride them, or do they sit, collecting dust as a museum piece ? If they do just sit, why ? NO disrespect too anybody, but i've always wondered why, just like classic cars, why make them garage queens, when they were built too drive, (bikes) too ride. You only live once, and you can't take them with you, so you might as well enjoy them.IMO of course.

I have ridden all my stuff except the mini's as Im quite capable of crushing them . LOL now some stuff sits while others are considered riders. not dailys but riders

I ride-em but my stuff aint that nice!

I ride what I have but none of my bikes have been on dirt....yet. I don't have much time to ride and when I do it is with my son in the driveway, sidewalk, or street. What ever I build will always get at least a test drive, that is part of the fun and reward of completing a new bike for me.
jfretless
There are riders and there are display pieces. Once you ride the bike, it's not "new" anymore.

...also, the feeling between riding (not racing) a GT and a Hutch isn't big enough to justify the experience. Unlike like driving a lamborghini and a 69 z-28. In that comparison, that would be two completely different experinces.

you don't REALLY want to see me on a Hutch Lil Holeshot do you?

Yes I do. It takes different kinds of course but I get a thrill out of riding, jumping and sometimes even taking the bikes out on the track
rickcool
I have my riders and I have my "hang on the wall art pieces." I enjoy displaying them and admiring my work. Besides when it time to dust I take the shop air hose....
TONE
depends really.

if i build something thats all nos or VERY rare im not riding it.

now if i had something thats fairly common and not nos i would ride it.

however, i prefer to ride newschool stuff and LOOK at the oldschool.

i know many people feel the bikes are made to be ridden and thats true. although hutch nos pedals didnt cost 600 bucks bitd. so if that was the case..........

also, i really dont like building them anymore. i appreciate nos stuff left alone. ive had probably close to a hundred nos frames and tons of parts. yet i only built up about 10.

even those 10 i wish i didnt build a few of them.

nos stuff should be left alone. preserve it.

Exactly!!! Why this concept is so lost on people is beyond me.

I might if I didn't weigh 200lbs...

I ride most of my bikes, but not hard. Only one oldschool bike has ever made it to the track, the rest I just cruise to get the mail. And one is just for staring at, but I am sure it will get a cruise around the block as well, as I cant help myself.

I ride my bikes all the time, at 47 I'm a little old to be riding a 20 inch 25-30yr old BMX bike but I do it all the time, I even get it dirty. I have only one other bike other than the one I've had for 30yrs, that one is hangin' from the rafter in my apt retired. As far as riding the newschool stuff and looking at the old, I haven't seen one newschool frame the even reminds me of the stuff I rode in the 70's. I had a Robinson Team model and I HATED, repeat, HATED the way it rode, gave most of it away to Reilley1. If someone made frames with the same kind of geometry as the 70's frames I'd build one up.

Interesting topic.

I have recently hit this dilemma. I finished building my Profile a few months back. It was always going to be a bit of tribute to my childhood days, it has such a great deal of sentimental value to me. However, the more I looked at it the more I wanted to take it out the front and give it a hiding, but I know I would be gutted if, I dropped a chain and ate some pavement, chewing up NOS dx end caps, kashimax aero's etc etc.

This led me to take a few new school rides for a spin. In a word, I hated the way they rode (oh and they weren't cheapies either) . So I built up a Nora Cup GT, with all old school parts, some nos, some restored (with the exception of twin pinch 401), the result...an incredible smooth riding bike which I really dig riding daily. It possibly cost me about twice what a decent new school would have cost, but it holds my interest when new school doesn't.

Truth is it is a tiny little bit short, however, I'm putting XXL DK stem on it and that should make the difference. I figure if Shawn Texas could ride these bikes bitd, and I will never be anything like his stature, I will be able to get comfortable on my GT. I've already started on my Hutch Pro-Racer for a race bike (longer top tube). So I get to fulfill my old school wishes, as well as keeping my riding experience alive.

My opinion, do what is good for you. (My other opinion is, they don't make em like they did.
spike
Exactly, they don't really make anything like they used to, glad to see I'm not the only one who hates how the new bikes ride. That is why I built up another Champion like my old one , it feels like it did 30yrs ago. Besides, I more than likely won't build another bike, especially a show bike/carpet queen, unless I find something like a 70's Pro Line f/f, I have all the other parts to build another bike except a set of 6 1/2" one piece cranks.
Kelly B
Maid service to dust your collectable bikes? That is the 1st or 2nd (I can't decide) worst thing I have read on this site.
G-Flash
I ride them but have to put layback braced seatpost on them. I have three that I dont ride due to not having enough laybacks seatpost.
TIM
it was a joke, Kelly B. geeeez.

i think i'll take my Red Line looptail out for a spin and see if it can withstand a 235 lb rider on a fireroad. and when it cracks in half, i'll say "oh well".

yep. that makes alot of sense. i have an Azusa cruiser if the mood strikes to go for a ride. irreplaceable stuff stays in a safe place.
jjcmack
I ride all my bikes. I ride my most expensive build(DG 26) daily because it's so damn cool. It is neat to look at them but it is more fun to ride them. Sometimes I'll even take it off jumps. It only loses value if you plan on selling it. If I spend that much money on something I want to enjoy it. Ride on!

Truthfully, with every collectable bike I've built all I want to do once bolting on that last part has been to look at it. The urge to ride has never entered my mind. I'm 41 years old, I have a car.

But I'm not gonna get up on some flower box and tell anyone their nuts for riding an old bike. Leave the trailer queen owners alone...
rick
I prefer riding new bikes. Lots more room. I'm too squirly on 70s/80s 20" stuff. Oldschool cruisers is where it's at though.
Ted Carl
Me and my buds rode everything I brung to Rockford. Just don't use the brakes on that one, or scuff the stickies on that one, or the polished....

Up and down the street. Maybe a couple of miles to the pool park.

Sometimes a "Special" pit bike at a national.

Lot's of my friends have gotten to try out some of my coolest, nicest, and mintest ones, and scuffed some NOS tires too (lightly)....It makes everyone happy as heck....That's what it's all about....The smiles!

Usually just the rider though, you gotta have a rider, things just scuff too easily to ride'em very often.

I have ridden most of mine a little. A few of them get ridden quite a bit but there are a couple that are just too nice to get any wear on them so they sit and I look at them lustfully.

I'm 250lbs and still ride my KOS or moose (gently of course!)

I am also 6'1 so riding a normal 20" looks (and feels) kinda wrong. The newest Ride I own is either my windstyler or 600a, everything else is older.

TA on the Track

I have but one complete. And after 23 years, I was back on an NBL track with my 84 TA. It was sooooo much fun. The TA still feels right at home.

I also ride a 99 Schwinn Super Stock 2, but it does feel too big for me. Maybe I'll find a newer ride sometime that doesn't feel so long.

Ride on. That's what they were made for.

Tim, if that looptail was gona break I think JP woulda done it along time ago....lol.
jerry a hutcher
ride em all including the nos stuff...
NSR Jamie
I ride all my bikes. They aren't that rare. I change out most of the NOS parts so I can keep them NOS in case I wipe out which has happened a few time. Though I have to admit, I am pretty easy on the bikes, jumping the odd curb, doing little bunny hops and just cruising in the hood mostly here in Japan. I'm not a huge guy so the bikes don't look so funny when I ride them and Japanese people ride smaller bikes than me that can fold up and be carried on the subway and trains. My next two prjects will be to restore my first model Kuwahara KE-1 bike and my new early Hutch Pro Racer!!!!!!!!! I also plan to ride these too, Cheers
COASTY
Same for me. Nothing flash but they are/were all mine from bitd except one. I ride them all. How cool is it to ride along the beachfront and chill out on your fav ride from back when nothing else mattered? Very.
Mr. Smith
I ride 'em like I stole 'em. Thanks a figure of speech of course. You gotta watch out though. Before I sold my 84 Expert...I rode it to the corner store. On the way there I noticed 3 kids...just the way they looked at me I knew if I would have parked the bike and gone into the store the bike would have been gone. Needless to say I didn't park it in front of the store and go in. I had enough bikes stolen !
bwl007
Mine get ridden, though infrequently and gently when I do ride them.
Brian P
i ride all my bikes. once they are built, they all go to the little tabletop jump in the neighborhood and go over it. (gotta make sure everything is all tight) then they will all come out now and then for cruises whether its on the local bike trail, campgrounds, street rides... its all good.
then they come home and get cleaned off and put up till next time. that also give me another excuse to (as my wife calls it) "tinker" with my bikes.

i personally couldnt picture not riding them. in fact i once let someone go out on my t/a and they couldnt believe they were riding around on near NOS yellow label comp III's and i had no problem with it
OZZYBMX
absolutely all ridden but built to look at !!!!

Not riding your niggity NOS stuff is like having a super model wife and not letting her have it.

I ride them...

That's a great place for a pic Glen(CoastalVL)
That's right in the middle of Surfers Paradise in Queensland Australia for those who don't know...
I wish that i still lived down there... In fact i wish that i was there right now!!
I've got a few that i don't ride but if i only had 2 i would ride one of them... Only if the other 1 was built using nos stuff...
Scotty

I love Surfer Paradise, I love Australia period. Great place and that photo brings back some memories.
Reilley1
I ride them and share them with my kids even...

RYAN-GT3540
I very rarely ride the 20's around the block, they're mostly parked. The 24's are ridden everywhere with all the "NOS" and restored parts on them.
Kelly B
WOW Reilley. Those are some great pics. It must make you feel pretty kick *** looking at them. I can't believe that you have that bike. In my opinion that very bike could be the most famous BMX bike. If that bike could talk. I assume it was DC's.

I know that I'm a little late to enter this post but, I have a complete set of JMCs that my kids and I still ride. The Pit bike is our most fun to ride. My son just won the local race on it. Have you ever rode a DY on the track? I could race it and do as well as with any other newer bike. The Cruiser is the one that I still race. See you at the track. JMC forever, thanks Jim. Tommy
