Brian Lopes sure has a potty mouth!
incog
I cant get the link to work
incog
I got it to work by taking out all the http:// s. Brian must not read the boards on here very often though.
Mike Welsh
That was pretty cool. Who was that d-bag that was with Lopes? Geezuz what a disrespectful d-bag. Doesn't he know that us cavemen are still around? Next time do a little research.......

Just copy and paste what is below if clicking on it doesn't work.
http://www.pinkbike.com/news/Oakley%20-Int...2006-Video.html
Mike Corvin
The disrespectful (even more so than that has-been Byron Lopez) little D-bag is Corey LeClerc, another pro DH racer.
Lopes has been too big for his britches for years, and LeClerc ain't no better. They both run their mouths waaaay too much.
Yes, Lopes has a very foul mouth. He thinks it makes him look cool...
incog
Lopes has always given credit to BMX and BMXers. Do you think he could come back and compete at a high level? Also notice he didnt cuss once while talking about HIS sponsors product.
Mike Welsh
Okay so this Corey LeClerc d-bag is a "pro DH racer"....does the DH stand for D-bag Hillbilly(in his case)?

I didn't realize that about Lopes being too big for his britches. So is Lopes actaully going to air his video anywhere else besides on the net? If he does it will be one big long beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep...LOL.....too funny man.......that's messed up and it reminds me of how I used to talk when I was in 8th grade.....

that dude said scot doesn't look like a bmxer. scot is bmx.
mike
Mike Corvin
Yea, and in another 20 years LeClerc ain't gonna look like a downhiller/freerider, either.
What's his point?
He's an immature little tool, nothing he says should be taken seriously.
But, it's still disrespectful, IMO...
nitrotwang
Upper middle class brats from suburbia "in the house"....Scot, strap them kids in a sidehack on a downhill and watch them pee there panties.
billn

Exactly. What a couple of ****heads, trying to act like they're all that.
"....before we were interrupted...." I don't remember Scott calling them over to talk.

Remind me to not buy anything Oakley again.
FBM AL
Cory didn't mean any disrespect, he just didn't know any better. He had no idea who Scot was and most BMX kids these days don't either. Is that disrespectful? Nope just simple ignorance. And Brian Lopes? I just think he was excited to see someone who had a profound impact on the early stages of his career. Didn't anyone one else hear him say that Scot was like a father to him? You are right Scot never asked them to come talk to him. They were doing a piece on Oakley with Brian as the spokesman. He saw somebody who he hadn't seen in years and he used up half of his time talking to the founding father of our sport. The only one who got wronged here was Oakley since half of their segment was at the SE booth. As we all know Scot doesn't exactly walk on water. I almost died when he asked what happened to his teeth. Maybe Brian wasn't aware of Scot's recent troubles. I wish the best for the OM maybe he'll finally get his act together when he realizes what an impact he has on all of us.
scottTowne
I think Brian may have had a couple beers in him, but he was obviously excited to see Scot and I don't think he was being disrespectful at all. The other dude, however, needs to realize that DH MTB Freeriding or whatever they are calling it owes almost everything to BMX and guys like Scot. MTB is where dudes who can't cut it in BMX go to flourish (Brian Lopes, Eric Carter, John Tomac, Tinker Juarez, etc. excluded of course, those guys are the real deal).
Reilley1
I don't think the boys meant any disrepect. Lopes, looked amped out to see Scot and Cory is just ignorant of history. Not everybody lives and breathes BMX history ya know...
nitrotwang
Come on now, lets not candy coat it, we all know what's up with that clip...

I didn't quite hear from Lopes "Scot was like a father to him"... You can't think Lopes wouldn't know the whole OM addiction history at this point, unless he was living under a rock and sends smoke signals rather than e-mail?

Lopes gets real quiet and said "Where's this guy been my whole life, he was like a father to me when I was 12 and then he just disappeared"

Cory.."He doesn't look like a bmx'er, has he been over to the bmx zone and seen what those guy's are looking like?" (laughs).

Lopes "I know". (laughs)

Then Lopes leans over and whispers something (both laugh). Probably said something about how his addiction is the cause of him not looking like a normal youthful bmx'er?

If you were the CEO of Oakley would that look "respectful" to you or professional to have on the Net, or to air that clip (seen by potential customers or even Scot). Would you pay or sponsor those 2 clowns as your PR/Product Reps on your company budget...not a wise move in my opinion..

Pinkies up, everyone, and pass the Grey Poupon.

Every site has a different vibe, and obviously what's acceptable here is very different from what's acceptable on the site that they were doing that piece for.

I respect and appreciate what Scot did in the early days of BMX, and all the help and support he gave me during my race career.

But I also know what Brian Lopes has done over the years, and the kind of skill that he's shown in BMX, on downhill and in head-to-head racing.

I'd guess that only a handful of people here have known both Scot and Brian over the years. The rest only know what they've heard or read.

Picking heroes is tough. Maybe letting them go is even tougher.
Deanna
GuyB,

So well said. Many knew these guys for so long. It's a tough draw for sure.

I love Scot and Brian.

I hate Scot's addiction. It makes me sick but then again I have a sister doing time for the same thing.

Seriously lay off Brian. So he swears a bit. He's a great guy who I personally consider a friend. The "other" guy... don't know him don't care. As always it was good to see Brian in a video as it always is with the X-Bmxers.

So how ya doing Guy? Hit me up with an email when you get a chance!

Cheers,
D

Luckily the CEO of Oakley doesn't want a stiff, super serious image for his company. Consumers in the action sports marketplace won't buy the product if it's being sold to them by someone who reminds them of their high school princepal. Cory and Brian don't take themselves so seriously in that clip and neither did the OM himself. Lighten up people we are on a website dedicated to little kids bikes!
radlad1
I don't know... maybe it's just me getting older. But I have a hard time with all the swearing and 'over the top' stuff happening on TV and magazines now-a-days. All of it done in the name of being cool or hip. Oakley and others never had a 'school principal' image bitd, the image they and many other BMX industry heavys had was "if you want to be cool, you need this..."
Now it seems they (companies) are saying "hey, will you (Mr Superstar) use this or that so we can be seen on/ with you so we can be cool too." It's almost like the companies are selling out their morals to make a buck now.
Anyhoo, I'm just a 37 year old father, probably out of touch with the times, but in my mind that's OK.

Everybody sets their own standards. I'm also a dad, and just had my 25th annual 21st birthday. Brian's a big boy. He can make his own decisions.

I'm also wearing prescription Oakley bifocals as I type this, and I don't plan on flinging them onto the floor and stomping them because I heard one of their sponsored athletes cursing on a web site video.
nitrotwang
Yeah it would be tough having a high school principal popping off the "F" word every 2 seconds on an Oakley sales pitch/internet promo, he might come off as being super stiff or not an "Action Sports" hipster.....

Just an observation but I'd be surprized if the "Action Sports" market buys more Oakley gear nowadays compared with the mainstream public, sunglasses and casual clothing has kept these companies like Oakley, Vans, etc. on the map for many years, I think JT Racing went into paintball which has a broader market appeal than MX... $8 grips and goggles don't make as much money with the mass market but enough to start a fledgling company with a niche MX product in the beginning.... Once the MX grip thing played out those $60 Oakley UV Frogskin Sunglasses started selling like hotcakes, to everyone and their grandmother, anyone remember the Oakley Frogskin Wearing/Mullet/Z-28 Camaro dude hangin out at 7-11? ..Looks like Oakley's about to continue doing that with the cell phone/sunglass/mp3 headgear now and probably do very well.

Now for the $64,000 question....funny story, the company name Oakley came from??
(Scot, don't answer)

Jim Jannard's dog's name was Oakley.
Mike Corvin

Yea, homie better recognize. Little [that which cleanses internals]-bag. We were "freeriding" in Utah when he was still on training wheels. Get off your high-horse, Corey, you ain't all that.
If you are hard into MTB, you came from one of two backgrounds - you were either an ex-roadie, or an ex-bmxer. There are 2 sides to MTB now, the old-school XC types (typically ex-roadie) or Downhiller/Freerider/4crosser (typically ex-bmxer)
Socalbmxer
Pretty bold of Brian to ask Scot what happened to his teeth......

Everyone knows that it's just one of the side effects to Scot's unfortunate hobbie.
Mike Corvin
Yes, I could'nt help but wince when Lopes asked that.
And I can't decide whether he was just askin', or if he knew what was up and was hackin' on Scot on camera.
Scot, bless him, just says, "Yea, gotta see the dentist" and quickly moved on - he looked to me like he was not too comfortable with the question.
If Lopes really already knew, he deserves a butt-whuppin' for doin' that on video. Pretty immature, IMO...
MikeCarruth
Man, I gotta weigh in here. I went over to the "BMX Zone" at the show for a walkabout. I guess I am stone-ancient, cause the blokes I saw bouncing around that black floor were a race unto themselves (no pun).

I told Scot "I felt like I just walked into the bar in Star Wars...I've been out of it for 18 years...but whoa! I never seen a more sordid cast of characters in all my days. Pete Augustine got heat for having A tattoo BITD. Dude is Larry Wilcox next to these fools."

I think the "too cool for school" 'tude exhibited in the clip is the perfect topper to my yen for the BMX of yesteryear.

billn,
Where do you want your prize money sent..how many Crud Plugs does that work out to?

Too funny. But that always been true of trade shows.

Nitrowang,

Donate my prize $$ to the researchers trying to come up with the human memory upgrade. That way I can remember the things that I'm supposed to (like family and work stuff) and still have room in my dome for arcane trivia like how Oakley got it's name. It's one or the other at this point, and since I answered your question, you know which is winning right now...

Jim Jannard's dog...
Robbie Miranda
You guys are brutal. So what if Brian is cussing on a little video that would be on a website.

And my thoughts on the "teeth" thing is that he had no clue about Scotts addiction. I had no idea until I read about it here. And I still have no clue what addiction he has.. Sorry guys, News like that doesnt travel very far unless your following somebodies every move. I bet Brian doesn't know anything about Scott.

He did give a lot of props to your God.

I dont see what all the fuss is about...I think you guys are just being waaaaay to sensitive. So the one kid doesn't know his BMX history, big deal.

And about the teeth question - If you're a drug addict, you better expect to be treated like one from time to time...
Jeff Utterback
Whatever.

Can someone pay me to walk around Interbike with a mic and a camera crew?

I don't slur. I can be coherent if need be.

Oh, but I'm not some current hero either.

Forget it.

And to think, I'm on the Oakley pro-driver deal also...

Jim needs an email from this fossil to ask if his demographic wants crap like this. (not just the Scot stuff, but the whole piece).

Back to my bottle of Geritol.
Mike Welsh
....I don't know but that's just rude to ask someone what happened to their teeth in ANY situation....I mean w-t-f?.....You dudes that are making excuses for these d-bags....are you serious? pull your freaking heads out of that dark dingy place and take a look at the sunshine

And Scott is not a "God" to me and I believe that bmx would still be here whether he was there in the beginning or not. But most definitely a LOT of things would have NEVER happened without the man. That's all.

quote:

I guess if that's how you treat people. I mean seriously dude, are you saying that you ask people with missing teeth what happened to their teeth? I guess I see your point of view if that's how you roll.

To say that Brian Lopes maybe didn't know about Scotts problems is simply hilarious.

There are some really pathetic things being said on here but they are amusing to say the least.

Brian did say that Scot was like a father to him since he was 12. I might agree with you if he were just walking up to random people on the street - but this was not that.
Mike Welsh
nevermind.....forget it....... I give up...
Mike Corvin
Myself, I think that's a great idea -
Replace Lopes with Utterback!
Jeff does'nt need to use the F-word in every sentence to be cool. He'd make a much better spokesman.
He's more of a bmx hero than Byron Lopez. (at least to me)
Plus he's a better driver to boot. He races dragsters, for cryin' out loud! He can appeal to the auto racing demographic in a way that Lopes never will. (Brian who?)
C'mon, Oakley, get it together!
FBM AL
If I had known there was going to be this much fuss I wouldn't have bothered. I think those O Rockers were the most offensive thing in the video. I can't wait for every lifted truck motocross wannabe to start wearing them when they drive down to the OC from Fontucky.
nitrotwang

You forgot the 50 and over O.C. West Coast Chopper Weekend Warriors... with Henna Tattoos and Mocha-chino Milk Mustaches.
Mike Corvin
nitrowang - what's a Henna Tattoo?
Some kind of sissy painless non-permanent version?

(opens another browser and Googles....)

Yep, exactly what I envisioned.
That's perfect for all those young lawyers and doctors who just bought a $60,000 9 foot long American Ironhorse with a 330 series rear tire. (Before he discovers it's next to impossible to actually ride the thing and puts it up on Ebay)

Mike Welsh

You’re killing me……So you don’t like what these guys had to say and how to say it?

Calling these guys names like that- what does its say about you?

Just my own retarded opinion (and not trying to challenge your or anyone else’s opinion)

1) I think you’re being a little heavy handed with you lip service.
2) OM took the risk of showing up- he had to know what could happen and guess what it did.
3) Some of you guys with your e-lip service, but would not talk that S*!T to their face. If you were right there when that footage was shot, I’ll bet you a $1000 bucks you would not have said Jack Schit!
4) If you observed Scott’s replies to Lopes, he took charge and redirected Lopes questioning.

This is freakin BMX and some times it’s raw!!
Lighten up bro
Mike Welsh
LMAO....chill chill.....all in good fun....I get read wrong a lot.....However I would just add that I am the kind of guy that would step up in person and stand my ground and I would have told those punks how rude and punkish I thought they were in person....It takes a lot for me to talk cybor-trash and I try not to do it unless I think someone is a COMPLETE @ZZ.....

I'm sure they are probably alright dudes but I'm not going to apologize or anything...after all Friday, "this is freakin BMX and some times raw!! Lighten up bro!......hehe...

However, I would have waited for the interview with Scott to be over since Scott is his own man and can, and did, handle the situation on his own. I simply would have told those dudes what a couple of tool-d-bags I thought they were and as a matter of fact if I ever meet anyone of those dudes I will tell them that in person. I'm a lover not a fighter but I'm not afraid of anyone and I'm not afraid to tell someone my opinions to their face if need be.

I'm just telling you how it is and how I am. I'm not the least p'd off Friday and I appreciate your opinion(s). Anyway, you said something about $1000? Dang man, I'll take that bet.
scottTowne
Dude, are you kidding? do you even know who Brian Lopes is (or what his history with the OM is)?
Mike Welsh
If by "Dude" you mean me, yes I know who Brian Lopes is. Everybody sure is touchy these days. No I'm not kidding.
