Just thinkin about shipping costs and realised that some of us overseas collctors spend as much on shipping parts for a project as some of the locals spend on the builds themselves.
This aint a whinge or anything serious, purely just an observation based on adding up the cost for one of my recent builds and also thinking about recent trades with some of my bro's in all parts of the world.
For example i bought a NOS mongoose pad i needed to complete a set for $1USD but it cost me $10USD to ship it. For any of us that collect parts from afar we must always bear in mind the shipping cost when calculating the worth of the part to our project. I know that goes the same for interstate shipping but its nowhere near as expensive.
Once again please dont think im complaining just an observation.
cheers

Unfortunately, as buyers or sellers, we have no control over postage - its a case of either pay or decide not to. Its not something that either party are able to control.

you are exactly right.i feel the same way about this also, but collecting is just that, willing to pay for that hard to find part.
usually overseas shipping is right on the true cost, sometimes ALOT higher, depending on the seller.i have recently shipped a few ebay auctions to the uk and france and using the usps shipping caculator,it does seem high at times, but i don't think you would want to pay for the cheapest way and get it 2 months later or worse,LOST!!!
i recently paid 7.00 for 2 stickers from france.
expensive,YES,willing to pay,YES.
i needed these for a scan so i paid whatever.
HAPPY COLLECTING!!!!

It makes it hard when my $11USD pad shows up here in australia. Then i sell it at what it cost me to someone in UK. By the time it has been through a few hands the only person that wins is the shipping company!!!!!.....LOL
Yep im full aware that its my choice thats why i rarely add up the cost of a build......
Unfortunatly i had to quickly add up the total of my collection for the insurance co..
Happy collecting
i sure am
whats a a few $$ in shipping, when ive met loads of bro's who i now call freinds!!!!!!

My collection doesn't compare to yours so I haven't had to add it up and purposely haven't. Your comment is timely though as I've just had a seller want to charge me USD35 for shipping one MX900 caliper from the UK to Australia. Needless to say I have started the negotiation process.

i work out shipping online using
www.usps.comwww.auspost.com.auwww.royalmail.co.ukso far its been pretty much spot on for quoting.
Kitchen and bathroom scales are'nt very acurate but the are close enough to get a good idea on actual shipping costs.

Yes there is a worldwide problem amongst postal workers that they charge what they feel like. Fortunately my local post office is a good one except for the trainee who charged me extra because the package was one gram over the threshold. Guess it's swings and roundabouts and I've benefited other times.
I always mention that if the actual is higher than the estimated then I will forward more and so far haven't needed to. Also, people tend to be reasonable and a buck or two here or there is not a problem.
And yes Waza, the USPS page about Global Priority is in my bookmarks because I can never remember the name of it when advising the method to use.

It's a no brainer - I try not to think of the postage cost when I am buying something - lol

As Waza can attest to, the people at the good ole US Post Office also have to know how to do their job. I sold him a Cycle Pro Foiler frame. Just a frame and nothing else in the box. I had the box broken down to form to the frame too and two different post offices (3 different trips) kept trying to tell me the shipping from IL. to Aussie was $250- $300!! . No matter how much I argued, they didn't care. I ended up having to send it to another freind od Waza's out west and then he mailed it to Australia for a much smaller amount. The freight sucks but then when the postal employee is clueless, it makes it near impossible. I went through the same thing sending JC a PK Ripper complete also. Ended up having to ship it in the US to go then across the pond., which just makes for more freight cost to you guys.

Hey Brian they charge extra for irregular shaped boxes. They charge much more but 300 is crazy. Just sold redline bars on ebay for $11. . Shipped them out today for $25.80 to Austrailia. Boy that has gotta hurt on the other end. I almost feel guilty when I quote shipping.

Mush. It started out as a regular frame box and they claimed the girth was too much by the book so it was their suggestion to "wrap the box". So I did, and you are right, the price went up!!

My GT 26 frame and fork, shipped from Ginny, cost $45US to ship, via airmail, from PA to New Zealand.
That wasn't too bad at all.
I think that the postal rates have gone up tho... Its the same cost to ship a pair of 20 x 1 3/8 tires, a bottom bracket set, some grips, and chain... previously a shipment like that was about $20-$25

I have the sept 2006 Aussie post Guide. I have a set of scales at home , the reading I get and the quote from this book is accurate. what it says in the book conforms to the price at the post office.
waza I know what you mean I have AU$4000 tied up in the TA and the CW Phaze1 the parts and the shipping contribute to this ..........sure need to insure all the bikes.
