THE DOPOUTS ON MY 82 LANDING GEAR FORKS FIT LARGER DIAMETER AXLES THAN MY 84 L.G.'S. ANYBODY KNOW WHY THE DIFERENT SIZE OLES IN THE DROPOUTS. I'M HAVING TROUBLE FITTING MY BULLSEYE'S OR SUNSHINE GYROMASTERS ON MY 84 QUAD. PROBABLY A SIMPLE STUPID QUESTION, BUT I'M NOT A MECHANIC BY ANY MEANS. HELP IS APPRECIATED.

same question? but in lower case letters. sorry guys but i really am a beginner when it comes to typing and computers. which is largely why i don't post more often. thanks for your patience and any advice you all can offer. gonzobano

If thats the case then someone has modified the dropouts. The dropouts on all Landing gear from 81 (when they were introduced) through 85 (verical stamped) were all the same three hole (or no hole) thin dropouts that all accepted a 3/8 axle. The 86 and newer horizontal stamped forks had thicker dropouts and two holes but still accepted the same 3/8" axel. If your 82 forks are opened up or modified then it's something someone has done. Can you post pics of both?

I wish I knew how. The only camera I own is a cell phone camera. Hmmm maybe I could take a picture with the phone and send it to an e-mail address? The resolution of the pics from my phone are horrible though. Anyway, I'm the second owner of my 82 quad and I bought it from the original owner/racer in 84. It didn't look modified when I got it. My 84 L.G.s accept the same axles as my 82 GT Pro forks. Thanks for your help, Gonzobano

the blades tabs were thinner on the 80-82 models - they got thicker 82-84 (thats with the unstamped verisions) --- the holes were the same on both 3/8ths .... heres a simple stupid question ... are you using the Fork washers ? you need to if not, if you are and are still have trouble, its a fair chance the axle slots got expanded and may need slight repair (attention) .... thats a normal issue with they earlier versions and a reason why they got thicker on the later versions

Yes, the tabs are thinner and I am using fork washers. But the problem is getting the axles past the initial opening (where you slide it into the opening or slot) of the dropout. I just took the front wheel off of my 82 GT and noticed that the axles on the wheel are shaved (for lack of a better term) on opposite sides, to allow the axle to pass through the opening of the forks. Where can I get these kind of axles for my bullseyes or sunshine hubs? Thanks again for all the help.

Ah, OK, yes if you have full round axles then it is a complete pain to get them into the forks but it can be done. The two flat sided axles make it easier. The difference is the axles, not the forks. Been there many many times with LG forks. You can get the flat axles through your local bike shop. I always just put the axle nut on a bit and hit it with a rubber mallet to get it past the tight spot. They make the forks like that so the wheel can't fall off it the nuts come loose.

Cool. I didn't know those axles were so readily available. My L.B.S. has zero old school stuff and only like, two bmx bikes. I much prefer getting axles that fit than risking damage to my dropouts. Wow, sorry for all the going back and forth for such a simple problem/solution. I forgot those axles were like that until I took the wheel off my GT to see how it fit. Thank you all very much for the info. Have a great weekend, Gonzobano
