I was looking around on Garys site and came across a track thread. I was adding to it and got on a roll with things I hadn't thought of in 25 years. Here the original thread http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=9274#p9274

Here's my reply, I know there's got to be at least as many 70s tracks that I didn't think of.

cool thread. I had no idea they ran anything in Rancho Cordova. That's were I live now (gold river area.
The one across the street from Sac Rcwy must have been were they tried to open the original sprint car track before the one they have now on
raceway grounds.
What year was the USBA national?
RandyS
Yeah, it was the original sprint track, last time I was out there the tower and probably the sprint track were still there. The national was 1985.

There was a little track in downtown Livermore that could be ridden at any time, there were a few races at Sandhill MX track near Livermore, a day and a night race and some races at Freemont Raceway.
sanjosebmx
My original post

from the 80's around the Bay Area:
Anyone remember any of these tracks? We were there every weekend 8)

NBA / ABA:

Fred Watson Park, San Jose
Hellyer Park, San Jose
Thunderbird BMX - San Jose
Orion Park - Moffet Field
Baylands Raceway - Fremont
Aptos H.S. - Aptos
KOA - Watsonville
Hill Country BMX - Morgan Hill
San Martin - Indoors San Martin
Chowchilla -
Athos - Aptos

These were the local tracks, sad to say theres really only one in the area now at Santa Clara PAL.

I can remember a 100 moto single pointer at Watson Park

jeez it was still fun remembering...

Long Live NOR CAL BMX
Alan McCorkle
Hey Randy, what about the track in Grass Valley that was operated by Noel Painter and his wife? What was that one called?
RandyS
Grass Valley was listed on that thread, the ones I added weren't listed yet. I didn't want to cut and paste all of them, just what I wrote. Grass Valley was called Grass Valley or Mountain BMX I think????

I rememberered a few more.

70s

Rancho:It was between Vallejo and Napa in the middle of a eucaliptus(sp) grove.

80s
Martinez:ABA
Napa:ABA
Pleasanton Indoor:UBR then UBMXA
Atwater:ABA
Merced:ABA
jwillett
The Ho's ran the track at Sac Raceway and the Roseville Fairgrounds(covered track and the outdoor/downhill track).

The MacMonigle's ran the 84 lumber(ABA) and the track at the old Sprint Car track(USBA) on Exculsior Rd. I think they hosted two USBA nationals, 84 and 85.

In the eary 80's someone opened another track at Prairie City, it was closer to the motorcycle track.

The Stockton track on Charter Way...with the tunnel.
Maurice Meyer
McClaren park was the first real BMX track I ever went to - not that I raced or anything afterwards. I guess I was 8 or 9 at the time and I still remember feeling like I was flying forever out of the dugout jumps with the downhill ski-jump style landing. If anyone has any pictures of that track please, oh please post them. One day I'll go up and take some photos. Driving by it looked like there were hiking trails where the track used to be.

Anyone remember a guy named Johnny Ray? I watched that guy destroy the competition that day.
RandyS
I forgot about the PC track in the early 80s, that was Floyd Lewis who ran Crazy Horse and the first Folsom Rodeo track.
Michael Weaver
I don't post on the other website but someone else could cut and paste my additions.

These are regular tracks that I raced at BITD.

Susanville, 1976-78, NBA (My dad ran it)

Yreka, 79-80, independent sanction

Red Bluff indoor, 81 ?, ABA

Chester, 82-83, ABA

I could be off on some of the dates.

The Ho's ? Is that by any possible chance Sean Ho that use to race for Hank & Frank and the Bear ?

Lots of familiar tracks that I read here.

Randy,

Great thread! Nice segway for those photos I promised. Sorry but most have me in them. Such it was back in the day. Enjoy or not.

Placerville UBR National 1980?

Rad-E-Cal Track 1981

Prairie City first turn practice 1980

I think Livermore UBR National 1980 (Jon Anderson next to the "ghost rider"?)

Ghost Mountain, Pollack Pines First Turn 1979? Jimmy Deaton heading off the track.

Crazy Horse starting gate (Scott Bercier!) and famous (first?) over and under bridge.

More to come...
THdoesntride
Final group of Nor Cal photos...

Angels Camp UBR National Second turn after big downhill (Ben Troia?)

Bakersfield-California Cup 1977? Jon Anderson (the other one) leads out of frst turn. Cool track!

Calif. Cup - Doug Stewart (?) drops into turn 4

Calif Cup - Crazy Stanley enters the below ground turn 4 (great photo skiils huh!)

And perhaps my favorite of my crappy photo skiils at 14-15...

Auburn-DeWitt BMX - 1977. Thats Julian Zachary "Zack" and Tom Binns on the famous downhill last jump. Look closely at the machinery. Pretty classic old school snap shot.

Hope you liked them gang.

(Thanks for getting me to do this Randy)

Here's a few more NorCal pics...( i forgot who I got them from so my apologies)

my 'good tracks' list..
Monrezee
Todd, awesome pics! UBR Nats. were always fun.You raced some cool tracks, please post more-Nor Cal or not.I love the old school home photos of the big races. Some eon I will post me & my racing buddies best pics.
spike
Wish someone had pics from the Merritt College days.
THdoesntride
Monrezee,

Will do when I get some time. I saw some pics in an album from an NBA national in Vegas from like 76-77 with Stu and John George. John George I believe tripled there winning Pro, Open and Trophy dash. Trophys had real slot machines on them and they were huge!. I was 14 or 15 at the race with home-made BMX pants. Crazy!

Oh, and this was where a lot of us saw bikes in a skatepark for the first time. Tinker and Stu getting it done. Who knew what would come of that.
RandyS
Todd,

Who's #5 in the Torker jersey? Raza? Jon isn't the guy on the JMC but his head is behind you on the Fresno pic. I love the good style/bad style pics from Placerville. The Crazy Horse start pic must have been practice, I'm pretty sure Jeff Hallieb was the only UBR pro to ever wear a Pro-Tec, and that was one too many. That might be my hand at the left side of the photo(clutch side rear brake).

I wonder what that Quad would fetch on ebay?

I'm going to start scanning stuff this weeekend. I say we should keep this thread going and post everything we have here. The Australians have their post with like 8,000 pages.

That looks like it could be my back in the 3rd pic down, Center of pic in what looks like a Suzuki jersey with a yellow helmet. I still have the invite and number plate from that race.

I'll have to dig out some pics and make scans.

Mike
THdoesntride
Randy,

Can't remember his name on the Torker (not Raza). He was like "a real cool guy" long hair. His dad was always in some ones face I remember. That is practice at Crazy Horse. I think that is you number 11 behind the gate? Greg Robbins is in that shot too. At Rad-E-Cal that is Jon Anderson and I belive Robbins way in the back.

Yeah...Black, Quad, Graphite Tuffs, Flight Cranks...wish I had it now.

Have a good weekend gang!
Monrezee
Fantastic, thanks Todd.I will show them to an old buddy of mine that you knew from way back when- Bob Medrano. He will love those old UBR shots & NBA, that era was the "Golden Time" of BMX for me, everything so new & exciting.
Michael Weaver
Here's my contributions.

Grass Valley Flyer

This is a track that I'm not sure of the name but it was a national down around Santa Cruz? That's me over the jump.

This is Grass Valley. Giberson in the 1 spot and me in the 2.

Mike
sanjosebmx
Anyone have / seen one of these?

RandyS

That's so funny to see a Grass Valley number with a (916) area code. We've been (530) for 10+ years.

Who's #25? It's not Steve Giberson.
Michael Weaver
That was at one of the Grab-On Nationals. I could've sworn it was Gibby. We talked many times that weekend.

That was probably 82, right before the end of UBR. I gave up Ashtabula forks and motorcycle bars in 1981. If it was 81 I would have been 21, 82 I was 5. Right jersey but not me.

And I have never, I repeat never tucked my pant leg in my tube sock.

I don't know if our little French front Tuff wheel running friend ever comes here but he needs to bow his head in shame for he tucketh his pant in tubesock. A sin worse than yellow tires
THdoesntride
R,

Classic stuff man. Yeah, sorry for the faux paux there. You guys running the Schwinn gear were far and few in between. I think I have a shot of Gork and I jumping over that starting Hill.

Had to be 81 because by March of 1982 I was living in LA with Bronco and Steve Giberson and Rod's Grandma's house. Never to return to Nor-Cal. I also gave up the quad for a chrome (yes.chrome) PK in 1982.

Ever see the lil french one? I saw him at and ABA National about 5 years ago. Is he still involved with Sharp?
R. Serafin
Nice pictures. Thanks.

Hi RandyS,

Posting a picture of a flyer for Mt. Lassen BMX, Shingletown Ca.

Also posting a race picture that was taken at Tehama BMX (indoor track) Red Bluff Ca. That's me with my pant leg in my sock! I'll emit it because when I look back to that RB indoor track, I think that has to be one of the best time periods for me. Of course not knowing it fully then. I hope to find more pictures.

Jack
RandyS
Jack,

Did you see the update on your M&L post?
RandyS
Saturday I was in Fresno for an Arenacross race, I went by this place a couple of years ago but didn't have a camera. All evidence of the track is gone but the buildings are still there. The guy working on the truck didn't look too happy that I drove into his trucking company yard on a Saturday morning so I didn't stop and chat.

AbeNitro
Cool, In the pics from angels camp. I am in second. The blue and orange uniform is Bicycle Village a shop in south San JOse that folded arond 1983..

Ben Troia
sanjosebmx
Ben Troia - welcome to the site. Weren't you on Moby Dick (bike shop) team? We had some great team battles bitd.

Chris Hall - San Jose BMX.
AbeNitro
Thanks Chris,

I started the team there at Moby Dick and initiated allot of the shops heavy focus into the BMX aspect of bicycles. That said, I was part of the team off and on as well as having some factory co-sponsorships.

This site is cool. It is really enjoyable to look around at the pics stories and perspectives all bringing back lots of memories.

Thanks for your contributions.
sanjosebmx
Cool Ben, Adam Cohen had his kids really into racing a while back - and I'd see him around a lot. He hasn't been around in a while.
I keep in touch with Charles Townsend too.. he's up your way kinda.

anyway enjoy vbmx.

Hey Ben, I keep thinking I'll run into you some day but it hasn't happened yet. Do a search on UBR, you'll find lots of stuff/people from your past.

The indoor track was the McMonigles 84 lumber track. With the dirt that never dried.
AbeNitro
Here is one from Laguna Seca (UBR). This was the first race at the new track in this location, and my first year racing (645c). There was a previous UBR track there that this one replaced. This later became an NBA track ran by Phil Zeip. I rode for Bicycle Village in San Jose, and was sportin a blue Mongoose... MOTO!

More Tracks:
Laguna Seca (Monterey CA)
Sand Hill (Brentwood CA)
