I was always under the impression that GT serial numbers went something like this:
483xxxx
4 = april
83 = year
xxxx = frame number
I acquired a frameset with the serial number: 821004
Does this mean August, 1982 frame #1004?
Any help is appreciated

That's what I would say, yes.

KIW, yes, sometimes they numbered them like that. If the frameset has the straight cut top tube, solid dropouts, and undrilled front fork, then it would be a 1982.
Is there a seperate number (a 2, 4 or JR) stamped near the serial number as well?

mcam...it is definitely a pro-sized frame (it has a seperate 4 on the dropout)...solid dropouts, undrilled fork.
I just thought that serial number was a little screwy.
Thanks guys!

I apologize for the hijack but it is related to the thread's issue.
What do you make of this SN?
12 21500
4
Seems a bit different that the others that have been discussed. Yes the frame is 18.5" and it has the straight cut top tube.

Thanks KIW. I was just curious 'cause the 12 is separate from the 21500, same line, just a few spaces away. I figured 12/82 or 2/81. 12/82 makes more sense. Cool, and the search for parts begins.

Scotty,
The Pro is 18.5", and the Expert is 17". The Expert has a more laid back seat tube angle, and the back triangle is longer too.
