I miss chrome... as stated in another thread everything old is new again. So want to start a pool? Who is first out with a chrome frame and when? (personally a Supercross UL in chrome would do it for me!)

Unfortunately the current bikes have just cheap chrome plating. Not like the triple chrom finish like JMC or Hutch used bitd.
I want it in chrooooooooome!!!!

yea, Ive noticed the chrome nowadays is nothing like the old-skool chrome, most stuff just doesnt "bling" like it used too...the chrome rear triangle on my 06 Haro Sport doesnt look nearly as good as the chrome on my 81 GT Pro, thats hasnt even been polished, and its 25 years older...
I luv chrome, for looks and durability, I dont think anything will ever beat a good chrome job ! I wish I had a good chromer, they all seem so expensive though, I guess it's the EPA stuff and all that.

Maybe it's beacuse all the kids wear black clothes, cover their heads with hoodies and don't want to stand out these days.
Sheesh - all the bikes I see on those X Games things are just black, souless metal with guys in jeans and t-shirts and skate helmets.
Bring back the good old days of colour, uniforms and stuff.

Good Lord, that bike is SHINY!
I'd be afraid to squeeze the brakes on those rims!
What kind of cranks are those?

I have to agree with you about the quality of old chrome. I just picked up this NOS '85 Pro Class 10th Anniversary frameset. It was covered with 20 years of shop grime, so I polished it up when I got it home. This frame has the most beautiful chrome I've seen in some time.

Amen Andy, I agree.
Ndptrs4hro, those are Supercross cranks. I have a set on my Staats and I must say they sport the deepest, nicest chrome I have seen since the mid/early 80s when Hutches were on every street corner. Props to SX for remembering what chrome really means.
sk8bones, I never knew mongoose made a 10th anniversary frame and fork. Looks just like a Eric Rupe Signature Edition. I wonder what the differences are. Killer frame too, it was found in an old shop? Great find!!

It's a Pro Class frame. Rupes have beefier top tubes. Dunno the differences in the geometry. I don't know if I'd call it a find. I mean it's been in a shop the whole time. Everytime I went in there I got that old school feeling. You know, "Man if I had some money that thing would be mine." I got my GT 24"er more or less NOS from the guy too. I bought all his wheels with 7x's and Campy hubs. I go in to get a set of pedal or a chainwheel or something and this frameset says, "Take me home already." I just couldn't bring myself to buy a frameset this nice with the intention of building it, and I don't want a wallhanger frameset. I bought it for someone I'd consider the premier Pro Class collector, so I know it's going to the right home. I'm sure regretting selling it, but I gotta get it outta here before I start buying NOS Pro Class gear to fix her up.

How much would it cost (ballpark) to get a frame and fork chromed if I bought a bare metal frame?

sk8, from the pic, its hard to tell if it was beefy as a Eric Rupe (I have one) or a standard Pro Class. I was wondering if the frame its self had different geometry from a Pro Class since it was a special 10th anni frame. Thats cool you got it for someone, cant wait to see it built...whoever gets it.
Mark, 2-3-4 hundred bucks for chrome, depends on where you go and how well of a job they decide to do.

Modern chrome is done with a different process, that's why it just does'nt "bling" like it's supposed to. Early frames were "dipped", a chemical process that has been all but shut down by crybaby environmental treehugging lawmakers. At least on an industrial level.
There are still old-school chrome shops around, but it ain't cheap...

I love chrome too. My LaserLite with chrome pads, okay maybe not chrome but silver and you know what I mean.....I want chrome grips, a chrome seat and some ultra rare chrome comp II tires. now

There are still a lot of chrome auto, cycle and other parts being made in this world, I can't believe the environment is the deciding factor. If one of the quality frame manufacturers out there were first out of the gate with a chrome frame, don't you think it would sell? The kids would would think it was something "new" but we'd know better ;-)

The top tube is 1 1/8" diameter. Downtube is 1 1/4" diameter. Top tube is 18 1/2" long from center to center. The wheelbase looks like 13 1/2" if it's measured from the center of the bottom bracket to the closest the axle could sit.

The place that has chromed (and nickel plated) stuff for my vintage bikes the last few years does absolutely amazing work. I have just given them un-prepped, rusted or painted parts and they are absolutely beautiful. I haven't had a frame done, but I'm guessing it would be about $150.
mdurg

150, that's not too bad. I was thinking it would be much higher. I contacted Standard and they replied they could give me a raw frame and fork but said they don't do chrome because of the strict regs. Well I did just buy a 125R off the bay. I could ride it for a few months until winter, then maybe have it chromed.
It would be so cool to build a new school bike all chrome. Does the chroming process weaker the parts at all?
