What year is this stem from?

Is it a Pro stem?

What is with that second bolt under the first?

Do you just loosen the top bolt to remove it?

Be easy on me, I'm a freestyle guy. This stem is just weird to me.

Probably late 1970s or early 1980s. It's a square-edge Tuf-Neck. The Pro-Neck version has rounded edges. That bigger second bolt attaches the neck's baseplate to the quill. The top bolt is the standard wedge bolt that tightens the quill into the fork's steer tube. Loosen it, tap it to loosen the wedge, and it should lift right out.

Yep...what Evan said..... whatcha doing with that Goosy 24? that is/was one heck of a find!!!!!

I have the Pro Neck version of the stem and can not for the life of me get it loose. I have used wd-40 and some other stuff to try and loosen it but it is stuck in there! Any other tips? Thanks

Usually you can loosen the bolt somewhat ,not all the way. And hammer the bolt down . Be careful though there is alot of tuf neck stems with hammer marks. Hate to contribute to another one dented. So dont miss.

Trick I've used to sucess: Flip the bike over and add a generous helping of light machine oil, Three-In-One works good, into the steer tube. Leave it for an hour or two and it'll penetrate around the wedge.

Hold a rag under the steer tube and flip the bike back over with it in place or you'll oil the garage floor.

If you haven't already done it, loosen the wedge bolt and back it out until it's about a half-inch above the big nut. Place a piece of wood over the wedge bolt for protection and give it a sharp whack or two with your hammer. The wedge bolt should come free.

A better way: soak everything in PB BLASTER (near the WD-40 @ any hardware store) - this stuff makes wd-40, 3 in 1 oil etc., look like a joke. It works real good, real fast. It's a way old school product that most old timer mechanics still use.

Now, take your stem bolt completely out, yank the stem loose while the bars are still clamped in it. Most likely the wedge will still be stuck in the steerer tube. Turn your bike over, find a socket and long extension that fits smoothly (not tight) up into the bottom of the fork steerer tube and with a big rubber mallet tap the stuck wedge out. One hit usually does it.
No damage to the stem, bolt, busted thumbs, etc.. a regular hammer should never even come near a bicycle.

i guess its a bad Idea to use a pair of pliers to loosen the bolt then, huh...

He came toward me with a pair of rusty pliers...
