Found a CYC Stormer Looptail. Want to know more about it. It has Ashtabula forks neck and bars.
Thanks, Blackwolf
Blackwolf
Found it on Reilley1's thread.
B. Apold
That sounds like a CYC MX model. The Astabula forks came standard on them bikes. The front tri-frame is chromo and the back half mild steel. They also had MXR model which came with Tange TX 5000 forks, spider/sprocket etc. They were available in chrome, red and blue and later they had the black Panther which was an epoxied MXR frame, same metals. My brother had a Panther and all the black peeled off in about a week and CYC gave him the new all chromo frame ( in chrome) instead. Heavy bikes, but those old decals rock (lightning bolts model). I had the CYC "ames" frame which was a GT pedal's ready frame rebadged. So thats kinda the history in one paragraph. There is some debate on how CYC ended up with the Ames frame specs though... heehee
Our local bike shop had the CYC line and they sold a bazillion of them things in our little 25k populated city.

I hope this helps.
Blackwolf
Great info. Yes, MX model. Now I have to figure out what to do with it. It needs chroming. I got it for the Ashtabula parts but it could be a cool ride.
Reilley1
Earlier MX Stormers are all mild steel
B. Apold
Your right Reilley they were indeed and his probably is just that (mild steel). I failed to mention that.

You could chrome it. Look for some literature in the museum if available. They had sweet red and blue finishes too. I'll have to check but I think the colored bikes were chromed first and the colors were a translucent epoxy or something like that or the chrome, because it would peel off and then chrome underneath, as I remember countless bikes doing that BITD. Let me find out about that one though... I guess in other words it looked like a "Chrome red or blue" color....

does anyone have the decals for these????? please??
paulatgis
I collect cyc bikes and would be interested in hearing the story behind the ames being a copy of (or rebadging) of the gt. cyc also had a jr stormer which looked similar to the torker, an old panda frame, and a j&g cheetah with the double top tube.
B. Apold
The Ames frame almost identical to the Pedal Ready frame. I was talking to somebody on this sire about it once and he said CYC kinda pulled a fast one on that deal... After I ditched my ames frame I was still 12yrs old and a smaller rider so I then bought a GT standard w/ euro BB and that to "geometry wise" was basically the same as the Ames too, so ya, I'lke to know more....

Good luck on the decals Sean. I had al kinds of those BITD and chances are they got tossed or there in Polly's attic...

I had the chance to buy a NOS Ames frame from Haney'$ collection, but had to let that one go. It was worth the money he was asking but I couldn't justify it then... that was then

I found a CYC Stormer at a flea market in Denver this summer. It is a blue loop tail with the Tange pinched end forks, ashtabula neck and cranks, high black bars with Femco steel wheels. The serial number is something like 00002**. It is in pretty nice condition only really needs to be polished.

How can you date the bikes by the serial number?
B. Apold
Thats a great question. Is that the complete serial number?

I can tell you approximate dates. If it has the colorful "lightning bolt" decals then its 77-79-ish and then they came out with the "CYC" die cut style which just have a yellow colored sticker. Does that help. The new stickers were 80-83 I think. I'll have to check forsure.
rickcool
Yes that is the complete serial number. I mean that it has about six digits....starting with the zero's. It has what looks like storm or cloud decals on the rear upper chain stays.....and a yellow STORMER decal on the bottom tube. The top tube says "competetion racing frame". The bike is at my shop so I can't give you the exact serial number....

Thanks
Rick
B. Apold
Let me see if I can find a Stormer decal for the years.
rickcool
What are your resources? Do you have extra Stormer decals?

Rick
Blackwolf
Here it is.
B. Apold
WOW!! Those are the first Stormer decals in the mid to late 70's ( 76-77-ish), then the lightning bolt decals were after that 77-79-ish and then the die cut logos which were yellow 80-83 years. My timeline isn't spot on either but I'm close. My brother and I had a few of these bikes so I'm using my memory, but I'm close on the years.

That bike is old man. Great find forsure. To be honest I kinda forgot about those decals until you posted them. Thanks for posting them though. I thought about those decals when I first saw your post, but thought you would never have those so I blew them off... and here they are.... sorry bout that.
Rydjors Dark Sider Black Sheep 1%'r
any chance I get, i have to post CYC stuff!

B. Apold
Great examples Sean. Those ar the lightning bolt decals (red bike) and the chrome bike with the yellows were the most recent...

That red bike is cool.
Tanker Kranker

That red bike is cool.
I dig it, too.

Here's my early MXR project, with the flat brake bridge.

The non-drive side dropout is stamped 229, and the drive side is stamped 12-16-76.
Rydjors Dark Sider Black Sheep 1%'r
i would love to convert my bike with the checkered pads above to the Red mxr model...But I am not sure about re doing the paint over chrome they used. I KNOW it's gonna flake off just like BITD! mine was actually candy chrome blue. I NEED those Storm/clouds/lightning red/yellow/blue chrome type decals!!!!!
REDRIPPER
Anyone know where I can buy a Stormer frame???
dunphy1
Reilley1
FYI. The original CYC Stormer MX had dropouts with holes predrilled for a sissy bar/struts and banana seat. 1975 i believe
B. Apold
Kranker, great pic! 76 huh? I wasn't to far off on my years then.

Reilley, I do remember a banana seat model like you describe.

Great photos everyone. I will get my Ames bike and my Brothers CYC MXR and Panther scanned.

Here's one photo of me ( 1978-79) on the Ames bike, or Pedals Ready, LOL!

the Stormer above with the yellow decals still has the rear upper support "storm" decals on it. Weird huh? they must of had those left over put them on anyway even though they were from the storm cloud decal era??
rickcool
Wow these are all sweet bikes. So what is the story behind Stormer bikes? I need to get a picture of mine up here. I bought my CYC Stormer at the flea market for $15.00. At first I thought I could strip a few parts off of it. After these posts I think I'll polish it up and keep it in the collection.

Rick
B. Apold
I'm really not sure who CYC actually was/is. Maybe Reilley knows.
I rode my brothers MXR/Panther alot when he decided not to race, so I used it to beat around sometimes, and they weren't the best riding bike I ever rode but they were cool. They were kinda like Pro-goose if I remember.
Rydjors Dark Sider Black Sheep 1%'r
I know that CYC was a BMX distributer...I've seen the catalogs at Rydjors bike. Also, I believe perhaps WEBCO and CYC are linked in some way??? but wait!-here comes Reilly to the rescue!
billn
Hey all you CYC junkies - cool stuff here. I am in need of a downtube decal like the one on blackwolf's bike and a headbadge like the one on Tanker Cranker's bike for this bike here - I have one downtube decal already:

I need to do some digging - I may have some of the decals from the later lightning bolt and die-cut eras.
B. Apold
Webco huh? They do look very simular.

I for got about the CYC "distributing" part and your right. CYC is probably short for cycle or something.
rickcool
Hey billn, I could use one of the yellow STORMER frame decals if you have an extra. The right side of my STORMER frame say "STOPMER"......

Thanks
Rick

paulatgis
yes, it would be nice to find replacement cyc stickers. These are 3 of my four cycs. the first two are cyc ames and cyc junior stormer.

and a third I am rebuilding this weekend

B. Apold
Stickers are going to be tough I think. They were one of the companies that lost steam in the early 80's maybe limiting production.

SWEET ames bikes

Wanna trade an 82 GT pro for the ames? LOL!
Reilley1
Isn't that an RR?
B. Apold
RR, yup! cool arse bike might I add.

Reilley, who was CYC dist.? any idea how CYC got the Pedals Ready/GT frame rights?
paulatgis
I noticed that too when I read the R&R bike review in bmxa found here http://www.theomofbmx.com/BMXActionMag/BMX...nDec76Jan77.pdf
mines mild steel with stormer stickers, but i dont know the date of the bike and dont know when cyc started putting their stickers on the frames like this one and the ames. theres hardly any mention of cyc in a google search. that is no history of cyc. a history on cyc bike frames would be interesting to read.
RandyS
The R&R looking bike looks like it has a slight bend in the top tubes just behind the short seat tube. Bottom bracket isn't in line with the chainstays. Dropouts are different too. It may have been built by them but it doesn't look like any R&R I've ever seen.

anyone remember the "pikes peak decent" article from bmxa? two college kids (i think) were given custom stormers with sprocket savers welded under the bottom bracket for the ride. i have the magazine...it's the only one i have... i think it's apr '78 but not sure. one of those would be a nice addition to someones stormer collection.
mike
B. Apold
I have some old 70's BMXA magazines I'm going to have to page through and find those frames. I drawing a blank on the differences of the R&R.

As I've said in the past the Ames frame is a dead ringer of the Pedals Ready/GT frame, so how did that transpire?
paulatgis
the pikes peak is not in apr 78, see os's website above for a photocopy of that issue. i dont have the pikes peak issue but remeber reading it bak in the day. of course it would go well with my collection. im not really interested in the entire mag just a color photocopy of the article (paper or posted on the internet). keep the mag for your enjoyment. bmsa 8/79 and 7/80 also have cyc bike reviews, but i always get outbid on those $30+ ouch. a recent auction for an old minicycle mag with cyc ames review went for over $90. wow!

I can take some closeup pics of my R&R / stormer jr. this weekend after I wood bleach it. Mine has a gusset welded in place to repair where the frame cracked so there will be a difference there.
msalyers
i don't have my mag with me...but it's the one with dave clinton in shimano gear power sliding in the lead on the cover. i didn't see it on om's site.
mike
msalyers
i found the mag..it's october '78...but i don't have a scanner. maybe someone on here can scan it for you.

REDRIPPER
I owned a R&R in the late 70s and it was a cool ride. I traded it for a PK RIPPER which I broke jumping a 4 foot berm(OUCH) I traded it for a Stormer, which I raced.I am trying to find either a R&R or CYC to build.
billn
OK,

I finally got around to taking pics of the CYC decals I have. Here's what I've got:

Large dealer decal:

All of these are printed on a clear background:

Here's a few die-cuts and one printed on a white background:

And here's a downtube decal and seatstay decals for an Ames Stormer, and an EARLY downtube decal for a Stormer MX:

I REALLY need the other downtube decal and the head bage decal to match the early Stormer MX decal for my bike. Someone HELP!

B. Apold
Well your with out a doubt MR. CYC decal guy, yikes!!!! very cool!
paulatgis
the stormer jr. not sure if its just like an R&R, it appears to have 1 true gusset and a 2nd one added to support a frame break.

ill make ames stormer stickers from photos. maybe even water proof somehow.
B. Apold
WOW! sweet bike.
