I'll be the first to admit. I don't know that much about bmx bikes.

Flatland and freestyle bikes now that is a different story.

Today I saw a kid on a old bike in the hood. (92 gt) I asked him if he knew of anyone with any 80's bikes. He told me his buddy had a old 81 mongoose.

Now, I see mongooses everyday in the hood, but something told me a 81 mongoose might be something...

So I went and looked.

I bought it from him, (it had a blue annodized Tuff Neck stem, which I knew was worth what I was paying).

and this is the rundown, camera is at home but I'll take pics this weekend.

1981 Mongoose Two Four competition racing frame and fork, serial number A2001452

single piece cranks with KKT pedals
Araya blue anodized 24 inch rims (back freewheel is shot)

pete's precision products 42 tooth chainring

cruiser bars, old style mongoose grips, old style seat and seat post, and clamp.

Are Mongooses of this age desirable?

I know the new ones are wal-mart fodder, but I figured this might be something.

part it or sell it complete?

They are Not worth a Penny!!!! Take the 20 bucks i am offering, and be HAPPY you are getting offered that much!! Well, since its an 81, I will go 30 bucks...Final Offer!!! LOL
FreeEnterprise
You sound exactly like I did about a hour ago...

and yeah, he took $30...

glen....shoot me a pic of the grips...i need some for a motomag

I'll double your money. If you plan to sell it, try to sell the F/F anb bars (if they are stamped mongoose bars) together. ..but you would probably get more if you parted the F/F and the bars. The other parts, I would sell separately.
hutchheaven
The frame is from 1982.Count me in on the list of interested people.Would you consider any trades for nice NOS freestyle stuff?I would be most interested in the frame, fork, bars, wheels and grips.

OK, so I checked it out this weekend, and took some pics.

On the seattube it has a mongoose sticker that has 1981 on the bottom, but the serial number says 1982. I guess the first questions is what year is this bike?

The rims are araya, with shimano hubs (loose ball bearings 10 per side, I repacked the front wheel spins like new with almost no wear on the bearing chases).

The front wheel has spokes that taper in and then back out, never seen that before, the back spokes are normal.

Back wheel has issue with the freewheel. Can you get replacement freewheels for this bike?

The bike is in amazing condition. I only found 1 spot of rust that I think I can get off on the bottom bracket (see pics)

Someone mounted a kickstand and bent the frame slightly by overtightening it... but, that is the only issue with this bike. It is really clean and in amazing condition.

pics

This picture should show the 1981, but I didn't preview it and the cable blocked the year...

I'll let the Karate kid know you have his bike. If it gets damaged Mr Myagi will fix it!

Those are double butted spokes.

Yes.

That is a beautiful bike!

Score!

I didn't see any stamps or markings on the bars.

Where would they be stamped?

I didn't remove them from the stem, as the bolts were really tight and I wanted to let the WD 40 soak in before I tried to loosen the bolts. (don't wanna strip them out now after all these years...)
Olefart
Yup that's a score and a half, still laughing about the karate kid crack, good on you.
Moosegoose Nick
Definately a KEEPER. Nice score there, bet it fits you good in comparison to a 20" too.

I got a bunch of offers on this bike...

But, I don't know what it is worth.

Should I take $550? or part it out?
OLDSKOOLPK
550 SOUNDS GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But My $551 is better....j/k...
Nice looking bike...sure it went or is going to a good new home. Man...whatcha gonna do with the 550 beans....that could turn into some nice F/S gear....hint hint...

Jon

It is definately a valuable bike.$550.00 doesn't sound too bad either way?It would be less of a hassle to sell it all together as well.Value is subjective especially on this stuff.Good luck on whatever you do.Plus it sounds like you aren't really into the bike soo you could buy a bunch of nice FS gear as Jon says!

the bars will be stamped in the middle of them- take them out of the stem and the stamp would be there. Nice score indeed.
Gooser
As far as the "freewheel" is concerned, those are Shimano DX cassette hubs...Ginny Rini has them, and they're also on eBay. It the mechanism is toast, you can always buy a new hub...they're surprisingly cheap.

The sprocket has Pete's precision products.

I've never heard of that, is it some homemade part?
Criscobath
I'd buy it for $550. Quite a find.
velocidad
what a find! the stem alone will drag you good quality loot - think carefully.

Definitely not homemade. More of a boutique brand to use the MTB nomenclature.

Some more questions...

What kind of seatpost is this? year?

The bottom bracket has schwinn marked on every piece except the bolt (even the bearings), it has two hearts next to the stamping on the bearing chases. Is that anything special?

The headset is marked mongoose I am assuming it too is from late 70's to early 80's?

Any idea of what kind of cranks these are? year?

The stem is in great shape, a couple of scratches but the threads are clean and the inside of the stem isn't worn (no slippage ever).

The bars are marked with the mongoose logo and say mongoose, stainless steel.

What year are the grips?

The forks have a 7 inch tube, will they fit other bikes? or just the two four?

should I split up the forks and frame? The frame has the slight damage from the kickstand, but the forks are perfect.

I guess I asked too many questions.
hutchheaven
Those look like SCHWINN cranks as well. There should be a date code on them somewhere.
hutchheaven
Sell the frame, fork and bars together. You should probably just sell it whole.Less of a hassle and the bike has stayed together all these years already.....
rumblerdave
Personally, I'd sell everything seperately- frame, fork, spokes, remove the decals and sell them individually, sell each ball bearing seperately, etc...
rumblerdave
that WAS a really beautiful survivor (although the tractor tires were kinda fugly)

Good luck!

Beautiful find !!!

I'd keep it and ride it instead of selling it though.

Wow, you guys are touchy...

The first thing I do when I get a bike is strip it down.

Clean everything, remove all the old dirt, caked in grease, and grime and rebuilt it fresh with new grease and everything property done. (I've built a bike for Kevin Jones back in the day, when I was done he said it was perfect, with zero changes needed).

The headset was so tight the bars wouldn't turn, and the bottom bracket was loose. The only thing done right was the stem. I figured I'd find busted bearings and stuff.

You guys are acting like I murdered a "survivor".

I haven't decided what to do with it yet...

Its a bike. albeit old its still a bike, I got it off the front porch of a house, and trust me it would have been in the rain and rusted to a nice brown patina if I hadn't come along. And the comments on here were that the parts weren't very good.

I was offered good money, but when I said OK, they "changed" their mind, so I was trying to keep it all together. But, the only solid guy will only pay $400 for it, and that includes shipping.

So, I'd make about $350...

I had my old school custom flatland bike up until about a year ago, I was offered $300 for it.

I parted it out and got $1,000 for it.

Like everyone else, I've got bills to pay. I need to get the most for it I can.

The comments I have gotten are that the frame is damaged from the kickstand, well, the forks are perfect, so it is only logical that if I sell the perfect forks with the damaged frame I will get less money, because the frame value will lower the forks value...

If it is so important to keep it all together than where are your offers?

Would you have sold it for $350...

I don't think so.
KOSY-MOTO
Thats Tops! well done!!
