Am wondering if anyone can help out with a time line of the GT Pro bars. When they first came out? When did they not have knurl and when did they? When did GT start stamping the bars? What is the correct size? Thanks to all who reply.

sdillman- the non-knurled bars were made up to and through 83. There were four sizes, mini, expert (or called standard by some), pro, and proXL (known as the Andy Patterson model). The pro size is the by far the most common you will see today on ebay. They have about a 8.5" rise and are about 28" wide.
They started knurling the bars sometime in 84 when the new line came out. I believe they started stamping them about then as well.
All I can say is that if you have an 83 or earlier GT, you will want un-knurled bars to era correct. I have never seen a set of un-knurled bars with a stamp.

Do you have a picture of the bars you want to find out the year, or are you just wondering all these questions for a timeline sort of thing? I help on 81-83 bars, but thats about it.

Yea, thank you for your input, that helps alot. I have an 81 FF and laid back seat post, my original bars were stolen from another bike I had them on BITD. Just trying to complete the bike and there are a couple of listings on E-Bay currently, but after what you've told me they seem to be later year. Check them out, the one might be questionable because the picture is not so great. Let me know what you think. Thanks

Also, is there a way of telling if the bars are GT if they are unmarked, no knurl, and the stickers are removed? Or do you just have to know them when you see them?

What years were the "Pro Series / Huntington Beach" stickered bars issued?

The only way to kind of tell on the un-knurled, un-stamped bars is that the crossbar is a little bigger in diameter than what most others used back then. The bottom section where the stem connects is flat as well to where the upward bends begin. More boxy than arched at that point.

The "Andy Patterson" bars were actually "Nelson Chanady" Bars. Nelson was sponsored by GT, Andy was not with GT when those bars came out. At least this is my recollection.
