Back of SE's Signal Hill warehouse just several hours from zero hour when we left for Murray World Cup, June 1982. Right before OZ shot famous photo of all od the guys hanging out the windows and doors.
The story of the trip. TM Joe Licklider, Duane Ballenger and Jeff Davis with "Breakdown #27" sign....sigh. PK and Aussie TM work on belts, hoses, or something...again.
After the 1982 Murray World Cup in Knoxville, TN. PK, Bronco, Bubba Hayes. Notice bus engine doors open again...
Lake jumping in same Knoxville campground. PK and Mike Lynch watch Bronco launch off totally safe ramp. Lonnie Tatton and Bubba Hayes to the left...
Todd and Bronco wet... (and skinnier) Tracy from Australia and Jeff Davis look on..
Bus parked proudly with others at Opryland in Nashville.
The Team at campground in Nashville.

Todd,
Those pics are great. Thanks for sharing. I was at many of those events at the same time those pics were shot. I didn't think we dressed that much differently from today (nice shorts and hair cuts).
I remember watching the lake jumping off the very rickity launch ramp.

Duane did become a pseudo SE rider in 1982. Kinda factory, kinda not. It was a little weird at that time.
Randy-Keep me posted about the UBR thing. FYI-Didn't you bust on me in January about being in front of you in that BMX Plus spread from Marine World? I almost posted but didn't. Take care LOL.

RS,
Sorry dude, as you know some of us only got in the mag once in a while. Was it a holeshot for the win or for Johns Kerr's shutter?
I'll look at the UBR post and add some pics. I have some before I was even on SE. Coupla nationals.
What are you up to in GV? Is the track still there?

Todd,
No the track is long gone, the land is still exactly as is was though. Every once in a while I strap a mattress to a tree and hit it full speed just for old times sake.

Ohhhhh, the Ghost Riders...You got me there. Remember we all had to ride out the back of semi-truck...I think it was Fresno or Manteca...how gay was that! We were just setting te trend for factory big rigs at the ATB and SX races..20 years too early.

Great photo's x 1000 & a quiet curse of jealousy & envy by me (& possibly a few others) who missed out on a genuine "adventure" of a lifetime.
At least you wouldn't have had any trouble finding or giving directions to the Tour Bus when it was parked in amonst all the other vehicles in the carparks , speaking of which , is it my imagination or has one of the cammo spot's painted under the drivers side window of the bus been deliberately painted as freehand map of Australia ???
JB
PS
You even got that weird exposure effect & head cropping that all my early Kodak instamatic 1980's BMX photo's seem to take as well. It's a very distinct look that you just can't get anymore & really didn't want at the time either

JB,
I guess it was the adventure of a lifetime only at the time we didn't know it, we only were hoping to make it to the next race and barely at that...
At one point the bus gave out completely. Middle of the night 90 miles west of Nashville (I think 15 year-old Duane Ballenger was driving) all the hoses, belts, etc. went...I was summoned from sleep by the sounds of the emergency flashers once again and our TM Joe Licklider, saying I had to ride into Nashville with a stranger in the middle of the night to rent a Ford Mini-Truck U-haul then drive it 90 miles back west to pick-up the guys then go east again towards Knoxville. I was wiped out so PK drove with the Aussies and I was locked inside from the outside with Bronco and Dwight Lowell. Dark, east coast June humidity with PK and the Aussies up front, me, Dwight and Rod in the back with gear and bikes. Just made it in time for last practice at the Murray World Cup.
(Oh, yeah we had already flown the amatuers out of I believe Albuquerque so they would make their practices and early races.)
I remember hearing the OM ask PK "Where have you guys been? You're going to miss the race".
Meanwhile, we're in the back dying from heat, body and other stenches we were forced to deal with...yeah an adventure.
I got 4th in Pro Open behind Harry Leary I think at that race. Perhaps my only trophy I still have. I silver cup the size of a large shot glass or brandy glass.
Good eye on the camera quirks. I think that's what I had. And also, yes, Dave Roberts (SE Artist) did the tribute to the folks down-under under the window. "Good-eye mate".

The legendary SE bus - when it still had the gun turrett! I remember seeing the thing at the ABA Grands in `83. It was legendary even then. Cool pics.

I rememeber being in Vegas at the World Championships and the bus was unloaded in one swope by the canopy of the Hotel the race was held in.

Jul 7 2006, 02:35 PM
Rusty,
That was the Tropicana and yes, the OM was at the wheel and didn't think about the clearance on the canopy. We were all inside and heard this big crash and all of the sudden all these bikes come flying over the sides and the turret exploded. The security guys at the Tropicana was ****ed!
They got in Scot's face and he turned the whole thing around to make it their fault! It was hilarious except for the few bent bike parts. I think a seatpost or two and some handlebars.
Other funny stories from that trip as well I'm sure but that was the end of the turret.

They broadcast every moto of that race over the cable system in the hotel. I remember going back to my room to breathe and watch between motos. I wonder if tapes of that exist? Maybe some TV type guy could track them down!

TH thanks again.
My definition of "adventure" is something that dosen't kill you at the time & you are able to recall what happened in safe & much more comfortable conditions later on.
Mad props to the bus's pre tour exterior decoration team.
I guess the pre tour mechanical team were busy working on their bikes or something , rather than having a quick lookover at the condition of the engine & cooling system in the old clunker they probably just bought & were taking on a summer road trip

Yeah JB, the extent of mechanical re-working on the bus was "get it running" from it's decaying state sitting out back of the warehouse in an oil field from the original bus tour. More time spent worrying and working on camo paint schemes, turrents and motorhome like features on the inside. But that can of starter fluid really did the trick.
Who would've thought that the engine and drivetrain might actually need "a look at" before a bunch of kids pile in it for a trip back and forth across the country for the summer.
I need PK to chime in on this trip because he was the old level of sanity and common sense (funny as hell too!) besides Joe the T.M.
Peeks...where are you?
Still...good times.
Randy- Don't know about that footage but Jag had it commissioned (Renny) Probably in a box somewhere or in the trash. Haven't we seen it somewhere on a forum that somebody has tapes?
RandyS
Jul 9 2006, 02:57 PM
Todd,
Yeah, I think some of the mains are on that DVD someone is selling. I was more refering to the tape of every moto from the first gate drop until the Trophy Dash. Actually, I was mostly refering to the ones I was in.
