I was looking at this 1980 Skyway ad & noticed that Denny is riding a double downtube loopback frame , I don't remember seeing the frame tested in any magazines at the time anyone know who made these frames ?

It's definately not the same as my Australian made 1980 double downtube non loopback rear frame. They only made 3 of these.

thanks

Denny's on a TW Racing frame. Very cool and rare frame. Don't think I've seen one since then.

Ahh, yes..a TW Racing TR80C! - What I and someothers here consider the holy grail of frames.

Check the search for TW, there have been good threads. - Very, very few made. Breakage common, Pete Loncarevich's Dad project. I did learn from here that DG produced 'em.

Would love to see one turn up, but that seems slim to none.
scottTowne
It's the holy grail to me. There were reportedly only four made, with perhaps a variation or two (wink, wink)....
Jet Black
TW Racing dosen't really ring any bells with me ,I'll try searching the archives here for info on them , but it's good to hear that 20 inch double downtube frames in 1980 were a rare item & considered cool in the US as well

Seems like team Skyway riders had plenty of lattitude in their personal frame choice in the early days before the TA & XL TA turned up in 1982 or so.

I still have the bike & all the stuff that is on it from the photo taken in mid 1982. Less the tires & the early GT frame & gooseneck pads (dammit) It's still a rider as well
fitted out with a lot of the stuff I would have liked to have on it bitd but could 't quite afford at the time , not too sure if it's a survivor , evolver or a retro bike now.
Sealed bearing DX pedals , new Graphite Tuffs with Ted's campy flanges sort of throw out the era correctness thing but make for a much smoother ride & cool looking bike with a 36 1/2 inch+ wheelbase

...come on Scott give it up..
variations- added gusset??
You know how I love these

I hear rumors that Haney may have one. Wouldn't surprise me one bit. Those guys have almost evrything that is brought up around here.

I posted some stuff on TW a while back.
Denny Davidows first press release on him
getting sponsored by TW Racing in late 79' or early 80'.
Pete Loncarevich on the cover of ABA Action on TW, ect....

BUT THE THREAD HAS VANISHED!!!!!!
Frustrating.......

Fergie,
You save any of those pics I posted?

Naw, Johnny...sorry..
..but it adds to the mystique of the existence of our holy-grail of frames..the pics vanish as well..

See what Shannon just posted?..
Does Mr. Haney really have one?

Am I losing my mind, but didn't Rod Miles post a pic awhile back of a frame that looked like one with double head tube gussets?
Gooser
TW...holy grail...Haney's got one...blah, blah, blah. You guys were so busy being "vintage" no one commented on Jet Black's vintage style. Now THAT'S rare! Bears a striking resemblance to Skyway team style, doesn't it...Denny, Andy Patterson, Bob Medrano...looks like Jet could've been on the team, no problem.
Jet Black
My searches proved fruitless too , maybe I wasn't looking far enough back , someone did mention "to have a a look at the TW racing thread" but I could not find it. The few references I found about TW Racing involved it being on "Holy Grail" lists & other rare or desireable bike lists.

Thanks for noticing the other similarity between the 2 photo's , Gooser It looks like Denney is holding back a bit in his promo photo.
Given the right transition & jump , skatepark or dirt , I could get plenty of air time bitd. Enough to _really_ hang off my bike in all sorts or weird positions & still get back to land straight & ride away. Table tops were a breeze once I learnt how to swing my hips & bike at the same time , I'd usually have at least one pizza knee or elbow when at school during the week tho
That photo is a scan from a pictorial /article we (CoastVL & I ) did for a local national magazine published in 1983 called "skatepark styling"
I was training regularly & very fit & flexable back then , but I didn't quite have the physical weight to muscle it with the larger guys in my age group (who were shaving twice a day @ age 13/14) & damm puberty didn't help much either , it turned me into a total unco mess when the "pressure" was on in the finals of a big interstate race meeting. I was out racing for the fun of it , there were was no money in racing as a full time pro here & guys like us who rode ramps , parks & liked to jump were classed as show offs , unlike todays new Xtreme breed of riders...

again, wink, wink.... It ain't me, unfortunately. And yes, the Crews/Medrano style is just as crucial as dual downtubes. Good work.

This might just be a dead end but "John WFO" may have information about TW. I think he was around that group of people.

The second generation TW frames where made by Green Duck Corp. Green Duck also build second the generations DG’s, and some frames for SE Racing, CYC’s, S&S and more.

I remember the two gentlemen behind TW Racing, but I don’t remember their names. I do remember working on prototypes and a small production run for TW Racing frames.

Those were very cools days!! Make frames all day, head out a shred some laps at Kearny Moto or the San Diego Velodrome and then head home to some great home cooking by Senor Al Johnson, Johnny Johnson’s dad! Then onto some gate practice with Johnny and KIYOMI “Yo Yo” WALLER. Johnny don’t be afraid to hitting the gate! If you aint flipping the gate and hitting the dirt once in a while your only giving a half hearted effort!! I used to yell at Johnny….. only P*****s are afraid of hitting the gate and chest slamming the start hill!! Johnny eventually stepped it up!! Yeah baby!!
J.T.
You should have been at Rockford this year! Had a gate malfunction during the Pro Vet's semi's, two guys flipped including Eric Rupe. Then did the A Pro's go...if so, 90% flipped and one face planted bad!

Waller was cookin'!!!

Byron,
What can I say.
It was so killer havg you at the pad way back in 1980. You pushed me to become a better racer and I did. That was the coolest when you invited me to go to DG Green Duck. Saw tons of frames everywhere. It was insane. It was BMX frame heaven.

First time I saw Pete Loncarevich was on one of his last races on TW Racing. It was at the 1980 Cook Bros. Classic at the usually BMXL sanctioned Irvine track. I was 12, Pete was 14. He slaughtered the comp. It was brutal.

Shortly there after, I was at a race at the Van Nuys Valley Youth Center in Van Nuys Ca. and saw him again slaughtering the comp. Just smolering debris.

EXCEPT he was wearing a Diamond Back t-shirt with elbow pads and a Diamond Back frame. It was his first race for Diamond Back.

I've posted that days Trophy Dash on the Greg Hill picture thread. It's of Hill winning and Medlin, Atherton, and Loncarevich.

I know one of the founders of TW Racing pased away last year. Can't remember his name.

I believe Roger Linder of (current) BMX team Linder Racing was on TW for a little while.

More TW Stuff guys.
Post some pics.

Bicycle Motocross Action Sept 1980 Hot Shot of Denny on a TW , it may help better date when the frames were in action.

thru experience getting a good shot with the double downtubes showing required a swinging a tabletop towards the camera guy....

Photo taken close to my house in 1982 launching off a
6ft dirt jump.

I'll match any TW picture with me on my BBR

Hopefully the threat won't kill the thread
Frame strength on this bike was not an issue , it was my skatepark & general weekend jumping bike , after 26 years it's still intact & uncracked.

I forgot to add....

What sort of handlebars is Denny running ?
Another factory special or was someone making bars with a single drop on one side to better accomodate the rear brake lever placement ?

JB

those be cook bros handlebars.

did they make the tw in 24''? what other bikes had the double down tube?
Jet Black
I think Champion made an old school double downtube frame , cruiser size not 20 inch.
I don't think there are that many double downtube 20 inch BMX frames made in the early 1980's still in existance.
I still got one of them built up as a rider evolution bike & the other double downtube frame I had , is now sitting on a shelf collecting dust , unbuilt I think... Pete ????

No one in the US has put up there hand to say they have a 20 inch double downtube TW , yet......

JB just a note, I was with pete porker the other day & he had a Quicksilver frame that looks exactly like that TW. He got his quickie from the original owner who was sponsored by Quickersilver at the time.
shinburger
Vector made a dual downtube frame late mid to late 80's.
Jet Black
Bennyg: If the double downtube frame that you saw @ Petes had a long weld running down between the double downtubes from the headset & had BBR 2 July (?) 1980 stamped on the BB , then he got it from me , not the guy who made it. I know the history of these BBR frames & where they have been the past 20+ years _very_ well.

Originally named after racer Billy (Flying W) McIntyre.

Back then, Torker's Clint Miller ran those bars too.

Hey Byron, Johnny still steps it up at KMP, but he wears a chest protector now!

JB, as you described the downtubes that's how I remembered it. Didn't get to see the BB but he showed me a picture in Pancake magazine of the original owner riding it, is that picture of you or did you buy the F&F off the original owner. I thought Pete said it was a Quicksilver F&F, whats a BBR frame? Enlighten me please.
STRIKE
OMG I've been looking at that picture of Denny for years...studying it...one of my favorites...and I never noticed that was a double downtube frame! Wow, that clinches it...I am stupid. lol

TW was owned by James Taylor and Brian Whipple. James died a couple years ago, don't know about Brian. Here is another TW Pic.

No, TW never made any cruisers.

I was on the TW team for the about two minutes, unfortunately it was the last two minutes of their existence. The last time I saw one was at Orange County wed. night race - I was given a "loaner" for the race by James. I was picked up by GT a few days later, good timing considering TW's pending collapse.

Pete L. was running around the pits on a TW with a chainsaw engine - highlight of the night.

TW imploded for reasons unknown to me, but one of the big issues was that the frames had a tendency to break - if there is a survivor out there that's not broken, it's an extremely rare frame.
caferacer
Benny, BBR stands for Bradley Brothers Racing. Two brothers who rode for Quicksilver from very early on and the older brother was a welder at Quicksilver who made the 3 BBR frames.

Like Jet Black said, Champion made a twin down tube cruiser. It was a 26". Quicksilver made a couple of versions with twin down tubes...I think. They may have been cruisers as well.
JohnnyJohnson OMAS DirtSlinger
Andy Patterson and Tosh Muraviov were also on TW.
Neither of them have their old frames either.

Wow cool thread. Denny Davidow was my idol. He raced at the South Pacific Nationals in Hawaii and tore it up. He was very cool to all the local kids and even looked local. So alot of the Hawaii kids here idolized him. I even tried to copy his riding style. angel.png
