I read the stories of most of you guys that see an old bike laying in the alley, or have a friend of a friend type situation, wondering if that will ever happen to me. Well, today was the day. I pulled up to a customers house that I'm working on, and the their daughters friend rides over to hang out. She's on an early mongoose, say 79' or 80' I'm not exactly a sure, but it was an older frame. I couldn't believe my eyes! I thought to myself, it's my turn. My turn to experience what some of you have.
So the girl goes into the house and I'm talking outside with the home owner. I make comment to him about the bike and my interest in it, and he acted a bit surprised. I told him I'm a collector, and about VBMX, etc., and left it at that.
End of the day and I'm cleaning up, and ask Mark, if he knows that girls parents well enough to ask about the bike and if they would sell it. He replies and says, " I already asked her for you and she said 'No way! It was my daddy's bike when he was a kid'."
I thought, wow, that's even better yet, keep it in the family. That actually made my day when he relayed the message. Especially when he mimicked her voice and tone in her response. Keep in mind this girl can't be over 8 years old.
By the way, the bike had gold araya's maybe 7x, don't quite remember, one piece cranks with snow flake sprocket, yellow Uni seat with white and yellow checkered cover, gold pro neck or tuff neck stem looked to be in excellent shape, hiding behind a worn out stem pad. It also had black dia compe mx 1000's with a two finger lever.
As I think of it now, I should have taken a picture of it with my camera phone. Oh well, I'll be back there tomorrow.
