That's about your only issue - the brake lever. If you are ok with it, so am I - it's still a very nice looking build, especially for your first time...

dude, whats up with that brake lever ??
the bike looks great bro, everyones just jealous of your bad *** GT...nice, everything looks "era correct" too.
ya, just mount the lever under the crossbar, like the other dude said, those levers are pretty useless no matter were there mounted, but they do look cool, and it fits the bike...

Also another quick suggestion....just for sheits and giggles...maybe some yellow and red F1's or b1b's would break up and add to the yellow and red scheme...just a suggestion.

Looking good. I don't think anybody is slamming here... all positive crits... Is life really that much easier on the freestyle side? ;-]
I agree the brake lever is cool if mounted in the right spot so it's parallel with the grips.
Yeah, 2-tone Oaks might be fun too.
Say, did you re-anno those Maxi's? Weren't all Maxi-Cross shine-side-like? That's how my old blue set (from '82) was. Super Maxi's were the solid ones right?? It could accomplished with careful and patient block sanding on the arm sides... finally finishing off with a 1000 or 2000 grit or whatever matches original. But don't try it if you're uncomfortable messing with your parts! I don't want to be responsible for anybody screwing up their cranks. It's just what I would do.
Here's a pic of a red set I found online... that little touch of silver could add just the right amount of extra dimension to your bike...

Did you know that number plate is Australian? They were big in Oz BITD - especially the air flow versions.

the dia compe lever will work just fine if mounted below the crossbar.
mine still works fine -- the key is to get it far enough below the crossbar that you can get full travel with the lever and not so far down that you cannot reach it.
personally, i always thought the MX 1000 lever looked cool -- especially in chrome/polished on a chrome handlebar
