Laybacks were around in 80, right? Is it just because it looks wrong, or was this style not out yet?

Juicy! Shiny and aggressive.
I want those tuffs. Swap you for 3 NOS Mongoose frames - red, white, blue.

the only layback seatposts which i recall from 1980 and 1981 in miami fl were the braced ones like the cook bros. seatpost (which i put on my 1980 mongoose in about 1981 or 1982). that said, its your build and, if you've grown into an adult, you are probably gonna need that layback post in order to be semi-comfortable riding the bike. also the cook bros. post is kind of heavy and its weight plus the rearward shift of the rider makes the bike feel a little strange. the nice thing about the cook bros post is it didn't bend (unlike a couple of fluted alloy posts i had back in the day)
