brilliant guys , i would love a parts break down .
i had an in depth talk with the chromer , he quoted me $60us for a "bmx" frame and handlebars , when he seen the frame and the amount of tubes and angles he started laughing ...$60 BUCKS !!!! it will take me $60 worth to polish it before chroming !!!
he says he'll be able do it show chrome for around $80au .
good by me any road !
even if you have a pic of ANY chrome quad , post it coz i want to get a few tips on bits and colour !

lol, yeah the quad probably has a bit more work to it than he was expecting out of a "bmx" frame!

And isn't that chrome quad on eBay a steal at $675? Seems like a pretty fair BIN.

1983? That surprises me. I'm not a Quad expert but that doesn't look like a looptail. Did SE change the dropouts that long ago?

I believe the quad dropouts changed before the PK's did.

i think ...
they made loopy quads to 1981ish.
they then changed the loop to the normal mid 80's shape BUT the dropouts came to below the seatpost angle .
in 84 the dropouts met the seatpost angle ...look in the vbmx museum for clarification .

82 was the last year for the looptail Quads. 83 was the first year of the new design Reynolds Quad like Buff had. In mid 85 they went back to the looptail style frame where the seat stays came up past the seat tube but they were no longer looptails. This design remained till the end in 99 (even the alloy quads in 98-99 and 04 for that matter).

I guess I never even thought about the drop-outs on a Quad. They were such an exotic back in the day that I don't recall ever seeing one in person. I must have just assumed their drop-out evolution was the same as the PK. Always fun to have a monolithic block of ignorance exposed like that, especially when SE should be the one company I know something about ... Damned rookie, go ride your Huffy.

The set-up in the ACS ad is strange for the fact that he's got a freewheel and still has the Dia Compe seat clamp/coaster brake arm holder on the frame. Also, he's running one piece cranks (no profiles) and those wacky ACS canti's (a few pairs of those on the 'bay awhile back). And ACS pedals...good luck finding those.

The design of the new none looptail style started in 82 not 83 and they where 501 Reynolds Cromoly before Reynolds 531 Milled Steel. Don't mean to make you look bad Brian but get it right! You where correct about Reynolds 531 stating in 83 but I believe the Buff model was Cromoly.
