i was reading in the blazer thread and noticed that some guys here know about rebel racing.i own a rebel 24 that i bought through my local track in aprox 81 maybe early 82.at that time a good friend was racing for them..jimmie taylor,he raced for titan and powerlite also.i was wanting to see some old ads or magazine scans..i have been able to find very little info, other than what i already know.my frame is not the zeronine style frame but a looptail,i have my rebel uniform and rebel balboa helmet and a decal or 2.history of the company and any pics would be great...tell me how to post a pic and i will...or tell me where i can send it so you could post it for me...

Rebel was from Texas for sure
They really did not do many ads except in the ABA papers if that
they had some really fast riders
including Jimmy
Jay dAvis
Patrick Alley
Eddie Siegmund
Richard Lamb
the list goes on
Never really got that big except in the states of Texas, LA, ARK, and OK

thanks for the replies,i have looked in a bunch of the aba actions and have found very little.i know some of the basic history but not the full story.i was told bernie had to sell because of working with the aba..kinda a conflict of interest or something?? i then think someone said they went to arizona for a short time??when did the frames change to the zeronine looking frames??i heard those were not done in san antonio.does the serial # tell anything?i think the only time i saw one at a shop for sale was at action bikes in san antonio..were they available through bike shops??

For some reason the name Brock Bruce comes to mind. He was a pro from Houston and he at least rode for Rebel. Does anybody know if he was more involved in the company?
I raced a kid named Micheal Hill that rode for Rebel. He was fast.

I thought Rebels were manufactured by the same factory that built Hutch (Florida?)...I remember them looking exactly the same, just as a Profile did but with the extra cross tube.

Hutches look like Robinsons for a good reason - because Hutchins could only copy existing designs, instead of coming up w/ his own...

Hey seedoit, I grew up in Victoria back in the day.
I'm Greg Tait, aka Noodles.
I was friends with Jimmy Taylor up until about 6 or 7 years ago. I'm not sure where he went. I used to ride with him along time ago. Along with Melvin Langenberg, Chad and Colby Cardosa, Trey Ganem, Gaylen Payne, and the Corn brothers. By the time 1986 rolled around, I was about the only one left still riding.
Anyway, I had a couple of Rebels. Broke 'em both. I had the older Johnny Reb with the looptail and also had a General Lee with the Cyclecraft rear end.

Who are you?
The Camaro days with Jim T. and Kevin Schaefer were crazy.
I see Melvin every now and then. He's got a little boy and I have a 3 year old boy. I've been in Austin since 1992 and still ride just about every day. It keeps me young.

Rebels were first welded in san antonio , they had normal looking dropouts like a GT or CW or something, then they had that second generation that looks like the mcs or cycle craft or zeronine with the dropouts under the chain stays, those later frames could very well have been made in florida by then.

I've got a sweet '87 Sport, an '84 TA, an '86 GT Preformer and some other crap.

Here in Bama, more specifically the Montgomery area, there was either an east factory team or a support team which was run out of here. Billy Boyett was the main guy that I rememeber. He was an older expert in the early 80's, but because of him and a few others on the team, Rebel frames were all over the place in Montgomery, Alabama in the early 80's. Then they just seemed to fade away as the sport got more popular through the mid 80's.

There is I believe a 20" frame and fork hanging in the wharehouse down at the ABA offices. Thumperpilot ( Shannon Guilette ) should go and take a pic of it and put it in this thread.

I have been waiting for a Rebel thread to come up here. I have not seen one in ages.
I thought they were another "borrowed" Robinson design too.
I remember liking them bitd when I saw them. But you are correct, they were few and far between in the midwest. Minnesota knew Tahoes, and Texas knew Rebels....Both very localized companies. Being that the owner traveled with the ABA, I think Rebel was spread a little better, but not by much.
I'd like to see some pix and more data for sure!

I was talking to Bernie Anderson of the ABA last weekend at a big state race in San Antonio. It was like 95 degrees but I was sweating like a pig and turning red and pink and purple. I made a comment that this Iowa boy can't handle bmx in Texas. I then asked him if he remembered the time he was in Des Moines, at Vets auditorium, at the big national, 1980 or 1981. Rebel was set up in the corner, very prominently. He said that he thought he {rebel} sponsored that race. I think so, there was rebel there like crazy. on a side note: It was concrete and wood, with the big triangular first jump that said, "ABA" all over it. Denny Davidow got pushed wide and totally missed that jump but bunnyhopped air and kept going and did not get dq'ed.

Ted, do you remember Denny Davidow bunny hopping air? Also, team Skyway was there and this was before they made the T/A and the factory riders chose whatever frame they wanted, some rode GT, some Rebel, some Patterson.

Rebel was the Team to beat out of Texas. I remeber at a race in Beaumont every time one of their racers won they played the Rebel Theme song on the team motorhome. They were strong. Jimmy and Lea Chankin, Steve Haynes and Racer really stand out for me. Steve was fast enough to give the 17 and over experts fits at the nationals all over the US. Smokin Steve is right Brock Bruce's family had some form of managment with the team around 1983-1984 and Richard Lamb was on the team.
