woww. that really is nice Tim, first class..umm no chain, you have a jet straped under that seat? JK..ya just got to luv the looptail on it...but the part I find amazing is that it only weighs in at 29 LBS. Thats at least 6 lbs under what I would have guessed at....
Terry
BenOr
WOW! Really cool.
Daniel W
Coolness galore! Never seen anything like it.

It would seem that trials bikes have evolved almost more than BMX bikes have: Monty 2006.
jpbmxfool
yo.....hella rad!!!NOW that ART...

Tim:

1. Super cool rig.

2. Where did you get your hands on a 1975 Hans Johnsen Catalog? I worked for them from '97 - '00. It was before I got into collecting, but I asked about old stuff just knowing their history as Schwinn, Mongoose, and GT distributors at one time or another. Anything cool was long gone. Bummer.

Tim pre quadangle great bike !!! what a viking bike!!! is that powdercoat!!!

Oh man, that is so cool. Love the color! I wonder why orange never caught on with the early BMX scene?
Marc Tardif
Tim,

That is such a cool built you have there, I love it.

I don't know why but I kinda recall seeing the picture that Rick posted above in Minicycle/BMX Action magazine (it indeed looks like Jeff Ward is riding) but I had no idea that such a bike brand existed.

I have a soft spot for trials and used to own a Yamaha TY80 way back. Prior to that, we used to have bicycle trials 'events' between buddies. My Yamaha Moto-Bike, with its dual suspension and 40-20 gearing was really good for that.
Reilley1
That's RL at the helm on an earlier model.
Picture was in Bicycling Magazine and Bicycle Motocross News
osrlracer
hey Tim, N I C E !!!!!!! I know that bike. I missed out on one back in the late 80s. that's 2 strikes. you know what I always tell you, keep that 70s hit machine pumping !!!!!!!!!!!
DAN
Nice, but what's with the no chain thing lately???
Code Blue
Another nicely done obscure piece.

Btw, That wouldn't be NY Met/Giant orange would it?
Elvis
How many of those were ever built? Can anybody speak to the BMX/Trials tie-in BITD? I'm trying to get some idea of the significance.

I never would have described a bicycle as a Viking until I saw this....crazy.

I guess this was the "downtubes under the bottom bracket" bike you mentioned a few months ago.

uh... no. frame was originally orange paint. had bad spray can yellow paint job over it. frame has been correctly stripped and restored to the original paint. everything else on the bike is either NOS or original used condition.

Another totally bonkers Tim build. I keep thinking of Nicholson as The Joker: "Where does he get all these wonderful toys?"
jerry a hutcher
sweet!!
revcore
That is one cool looking bike. I'd love to get my hands on one of those.
TIM
so... can anyone enlighten us as to the ins and outs of trials riding?
Jeff V
I don't know anything about trials riding per say, but I will challenge you to any type of riding that could be done on that bike. Want me to go first?
Ken Pliska
That is simply beautiful.
eric hestermann

I imagine that it evolved much like BMX -- bicycle-riding kids emulating their motorcycle-riding heroes. I'd sure like to know more if anyone can illuminate this obscure corner of BMX history.

As in the Wikipedia link Tim posted, trials today is wildly imaginative and very difficult at the competitive level. Looking at the leading practitioners of the discipline today, one could conclude that it evolved from the hop/balance stuff that Hans Rey pioneered on a BMX bike.
Astrodamus
I can't believe he's doing trials on an aluminum bike!
Evan
PK sportin' a wing thing ^^^!

Also, BMXA did a test of the Montesa TI Montesita trials bicycle in the May 1980 issue. I'll pop it in here if anyone wants to see it, just hate to jack a thread on one of TIM's fine pieces of history. That bike is too cool.
Reilley1
Totally self-serving picture but vaguely related to this thread. The back of the picture reads "Doing my Lane Leavitt" imitation

How cheesy can you get? (even back in 75!)

TIM
cool info and pics! how far ahead of the curve was Matthews? they manufactured a trials specific bicycle in 1975!
Jeff Utterback
The cat sportin' the Bell helmets flat lid was R.L. (back a page or so) edit here...as Rick already said, am I losing it? don't answer that...

Us stoneage guys dug trials BITD...

the Yamaha Gold Cup II had trials as an event, I won the 12-13 class thank you (got spanked else where)

Oh and Tim...

YOU SUCK! (man! where does he find this stuff?!)

I was waiting for JU to tell us about the trials event at Soledad....

(How did I know he would mention it? the same way I knew he rode a maroon Stroker at WSA)

I always thought trials was awesome. I used to set up all kind of trials obstacles to hit on my Honda Trail 70 and of course, the BMXer too. I was cross-training at some MTB trails last week on my S&M 24" and hit some real fun trials sections with big rocks and logs and such. Me, me, me, why is it always about me? Sorry, that bike is real cool.
Nic Johnson99
I'm a big fan of trials. I had no idea it went back that far. Tim, as usual, super cool bike. Here is trials today (for those interested) check some of the video on this page --> TRIALS TODAY

...and, yeah, don't try this at home...

Once again my jaw is on the floor. This one is definitely in my top 3 of your bikes Tim.

Awesome history, awesome bike . . . tres cool!!!

This guy is pretty good too. Just like when the whole BMX thing started we thought you couldnt get any better or the tricks couldnt get any bigger people like this come along and put a new breath into a sport. Kinda like when AC Farias stopped riding motorcycle trials and went into the world of stunt riding.
Sodbuster
Aww geez Tim! Now I’m just embarrassed. Yet another one of my “back burner” projects I have to get started on. You shamed me into it. Like many of the other bike projects I have been getting done lately I have been sitting on a Matthews Trials model for a few years now. I guess it’s time to get rollin’ on this one.

Your Trials model came out just unbelievable. Outstanding job dude!!
