I've never owned a set of Hutch pedals. Suntour XC-1's were the closest I've ever had. Anyway, I always scope 'em out on ebay - on the off chance I may find a restorable set I can afford. I was looking at the auction below today, and it says the cages are original...and the teeth look different than what I think original should be. Anybody want to chime in on this?

Geez...you're right! I didn't even notice that. I guess I was hyper-focused on the teeth!

Ask the seller to stick a magnet to the pedal shafts. If it sticks, the shafts are not TI...I don't think they are though...
Did he sharpen those cages? what kind are they?

those are not hutch cages. on a very, very outside chance...maybe Hutchins, but i don't remember them ever using a cage like that (i was a hutchins dealer from start to finish).
they do have the same cut/teeth as Revcore pedals (revcore and hutchins were part of the same company), but revcores were square.

They are Crupi replacements. Wow, they spin for days. Then they are in some serious need of new bearings. Buyer beware. I don't know the seller, but the description is all wrong. I just put new sealed bearings in my Titrons. They spin smooth, not long. I hope that his description of the chrome is right, but since he's been wrong about everything else I say be extremely cautious. Hope I'm wrong about that.

Definitely wrong cages, and it looks like he bought one of those sheety rebuild kits from 302zapper,don't EVER buy his replacement bolt sets, don't even come close to fitting correctly, they will look just that, not screwed down all the way...

Titanium is a non-ferrous metal. A magnet will not stick to it. If a magnet sticks to the shafts, they are steel.
Sk8bones is exactly correct, if they "spin for days" then the bearings are dried out and need attention. Good bearings with proper lube will feel like butter, but will only do 2-3 revolutions when spun.
This guy has an issue with improper thread pitch also, even with some dirt and minor damage you should still be able to thread the bolts into the body, right?
But they are HUTCH pedals, so, why was'nt the starting bid set at 750 bucks or so like usual? C'mon, they say Hutch on them, they must be worth a mint!

Ok..I'll take the point on this one and clear up the confusion...
Spindles: As stated by Mike Corvin stated titanium is non-magnetic so that answers the first question. Hutch also did NOT chrome plate the titanium spindles because doing so would be a very unusual thing to do to titanium; even today. Furthermore, Pro size Hutch titanium spindles are also about as rare as a freshly butchered cow.
Cages: The cages are Hutchins era cages (not Crupi, Trog, or Urchins) but whether or not they are the original cages on those pedals is doubtful.
The Hutchins era pedals did not use a chrome plated spindle like these pedals. The spindles were black oxide and also had a much wider, about 5/16", wrench flat. The chrome on the bodies also looks a little to good to be NOS even if they were Hutchins era.
The bodies and spindles are a good match but there is reason to be concerned about the state of the threads with the cage bolts not fully inserted. If you look closely you can see that one of the spindle bolts is also not fully inserted because there is a gap between the collar on the spindle and the bearing.
The auction details are wrought with descrepancies but I am sure that is largely due to the fact that the seller just doesn't know what he has.
Good luck!

Cages: The mini Hutch pedal used to ran with similar thick cages. Like era wise not very beautifull if you ask me though. But noone asks me so I would better shut my mouth if I was me.
And Alan talking about the spindle bolts. Sometimes when the cages are not drilled right (and that happened a lot with especially the mini alu cages) the bolts are screwed in the wrong way and damaged the threads of the body... so ask the seller whether the threads are still in good state!

The mini cages had the same shape as the PRO size cages. These are all wrong for HUTCH original equipment. As already stated above.

Jim...right on...the original Hutch mini cages were nothing more than a cut-down version of the pro size and I have yet to see a set that really looked as good as the pro size cages for this reason. They always look kind of buggered up because the bolt holes are modified to make 'em fit. I asked Bill Grove why they didn't make a mini specific stamp and he said they just never took the time to do it. The later Hutchins era mini pedals came stock with that nasty looking cage in the auction.

Nasty it is for sure as in my opinion that the cages doesn't fit on the bodies. It is not 1 complete pedal...
