Does anyone know when Minicycle magazine became Minicycle/BMX Action, then Super BMX (Super BMX/Freestyle)? Also, what was the final issue of the magazine?

Thanks,
Greg

Rick,
Thanks man! The earliest issue of Minicycle/BMX Action is a Sept. 76 issue, it has you listed as "BMX Editor", and Scot Breithaupt as "BMX Tech Wizard'. It says on the inside that it is Vol. 3 NO. 9. I am assuming that the first issue was sometime in 1973. I am specifically looking for the date of the fist issue that would have been titled Minicycle/BMX Action. Would you know if there was any BMX coverage prior to the name change, or your being the BMX Editor? I probably have about 75-100 issue from 1976 through the late 80's, and would like to get a better idea of the life of the magazine, so I can see which issues I am missing. Sorry for the long post. Any help is greatly appreciated.

1st year, being Vol 1, would have been 1974.

(Vol 1 1974, Vol 2 1975, Vol 3 1976...)

I never knew there was a relation between Minicycle/bmx action and Superbmx. I LOVED MINICYCLE/BMX ACTION. I must have read the issue that tested the DG RM80/DG YZ80 500 times. I wish I still had it.

No offense; I didn't care for Superbmx. The TV celebs features came off as cheesy to me... of course, I still bought it and have a bunch of issues to this day But...

Now I like the Superbmx issues. They seemed to capture the corny 80's trends best. The music and fashion features....goood stuff.

Cornfed,
I never cared much for Super BMX either, BMX Action was always the best, followed by Plus. But, for having a good research library the old Super BMX mags rule. They covered a lot of the more obscure races, and sanctions (UBR, NPSA, FBMXA, etc.) Mid 80's Super BMX was pretty high on the cheese factor though!!

Cheese and all, Super BMX was a cool mag. Tons of coverage.

I think another thing that held it back (Super BMX) is the quality of the photographs both black/white and color. It seemed to lag behind BMX Action and BMX Plus! in that regard until near the end in 1989. Also, it seemed to be geared toward a slightly younger crowd, at least until the mid '80's. On the other hand it did, as someone else said, cover the more obscure sanctioning bodies, especially the National Pedal Sport Association (NPSA). I could had done without the celebrities, but the issue with Justine Bateman in the centerfold of the January 1983 issue (with Ron House) was great!

One thing it did have over Plus! and Action is that it did have an editorial page that covered "hard news" more often than the other two. Like covering the actions of the sanctioning bodies and their rules. OZ at BMXA could be opinionated but I think SBMX did it more often. The best example is the two part expose on the battle between the United States Bicycle Association (USBA) and the ABA. "Reflections on the ABA vs. USBA Battle" by Bob Hadley in the September and October 1986 issues it was called. What an eye opening thing it was for me. Did that sort of thing happen between sanctioning bodies all the time?

I do remember BMXA did do a serious article about the politics in BMX in the April 1982 issue on the fight between the various sanctioning bodies scheduling their nationals counter to each other. I don't recall BMXP! ever doing any "hard news" like that during the old school era.

Anyway, the earliest SBMX I have is the July, 1981 issue with Scott Clark on the cover. The earliest and only copy of Minicycle/BMX Action I have is the October 1976 issue. My earliest BMXA is the May 1979 issue with the 1978 Jag WC on the cover and my earliest Plus! is the October 1981 issue with Greg Hill (racing for Mongoose) on the cover.

I hope this post wasn't to long!
