My 8 year old girl and 9 year old boy were watching Joe Kid with me when they were here for Spring break. They were all stoked to see the old school stuff and were excited to see Dave Clinton everytime he came up cause they know I have that bike hanging on the wall.
About half way through the movie (during the freestyle) section, they both started getting fidgety and both said they wer going to do something else. I tried to explain to them about freestyle and stuff.
Patrick looked at me and said "That's stuff is pretty cool, but I want to see some more of the downhill and sidehack racing." Reilley piped in "Me too, we'll come when they show more"
No disrepect intended towards the freestyle guys, it just made me smile how Patrick and Reilley had similar thoughts as I do

Tell them they can come over and watch my Dorkin' in York box set anytime...that oughta' break 'em in...
No disrespect but the reason I got into freestyle was because racing was boring to me. We didn't have any rad downhill tracks in IL like you cats do in SoCal....

How can you not like Aggroman?
I have to admit that I was stoked to see the BMX in Joe kid more than the freestyle. Maybe because I was around for the freestyle. Either way, it's all good. Are you in Joe Kid, Reilley 1?

We had a lot of downhill here in SF - it was just cement. Yeah, I liked the early BMX section a lot too. I was grom in the 70's and did my time on a Schwinn. The dirt lot footage covered my 70's experience pretty well. Joe Kid definitely helped connect the racing to freestyle too which was going on while I was on hiatus.
It's funny when I hear racers bemoaning the popularity of freestyle though. Reminds me of the early 80's when I still thought real BMX was going on at the tracks I couldn't get to. Then, one day it hit me - I guess I'm a "freestyler".
I know what you're saying though. I'm kind of hoping my kid doesn't take to skateboarding more than BMX. Mainly just so we can ride together.
