Full Version: The First GT 24" Cruiser? .........

At first glance, this appears to be a run of the mill Early GT 24" Cruiser. Sure it has some cool components for a survivor; Early GT Cruiser Bars, Campy Record High Flange Hubs with Track Axles laced to 7x Hoops, GT Block Stem, JMC Straight Post, DX Pedals, Tuf Neck Disc, etc., but when you look closely, very closely the true history of this bike is revealed.

It actually started out life as a very early GT 26" Cruiser that sometime in the last 25+ years, had its dropouts cut off, seat stays and chain stays cut and shortened at the rear, and the rear most portion of the piercing top tube cut off and rewelded at an angle that would work for a 24" wheel.

The fact that someone went to so much trouble to cut and rework this GT 26 would lead you to believe there were no other options for a GT 24 at the time.

That is sick......in more ways than one. Very cool looking though, imo. When you're ready to unload the seatpost let me know, haha!

I had a 1981 GT 24 that I recently sold. Is that the first year of the 24's ? A bit shorter & higher profile than the 1982 24's.

I am working on a 1981 GT 26 right now.

Ken,

Kevin Harlow might be able to help. He raced one of the first GT 24's at the Jag World Champs (I remember him telling me this about the photo below)

Maybe he can recall any "first offs" like that.

Cool bike Makes for an interesting GT 24, as its a 24 with the top tube length of a 26. I must compare the geometry of my two
