I personally always avoid this, I dont care, its says something about the person and I dont need it. You can call it free market, make more money, etc, to me, it shows you care jack crap about vintage.

Im all for it. What if you already had the frame. Your not going want to buy another frame and fork combo. And the people that do are going to split it up anyway. So whats wrong with capitalizing on it.

Yeah,,, I dont like it either!!! its true "why not capitalize" but it sucks in my opinion,,, they simply do it because they can!!!! Whaata ya gonna do??

If you list the frame and fork separately, photograph them separately, and don't show photos of one in the auction for the other.
And why does selling a frame and fork separately show that you "care jack crap about vintage"? Frames and forks don't have matching serial numbers. Half the time they don't even have the same provenance. It's not always the best idea to separate them, but it's not always heresy either.

The knuckle heads usually close the fork auction first too!
Then all the buyers that need them both quit bidding on the frame after the forks have already been won by someone else.
So the forks go high because of all the people that want them both. Then the frame falls flat on its face.
I just bought a set of Sting forks on a separated auction. same story. I paid 100 for the forks, and then watched the frame get no more bids, and it went for 100 bucks......
Not wise marketing.....

I agree w/ Dave totally - if you do wish to separate a frame and fork into 2 different auctions, at least have the common courtesy to photograph them seperately.
Personally, I think that a matched frame/fork combo should be kept together and sold as a single unit, but that's just me. I don't remember ever seeing a frame and fork with matching numbers. Seperating something like that would be blasphemy.
Can you guys imagine how crazy collecting these bikes would be if frames and forks DID come as matched sets? You guys would have to hunt the world over for not just the correct frame/fork, but the NUMBERS would have to match as well!!

Chrome is different, paint is different, the elements and conditions in which they were kept is key too. I will never buy an unmatched set (if I can help it). You can tell up close they were from separate batches/sets. Period.

Man Ted carl you seem to have it out for me. I am the knucklehead who sold the sting fork first, then the frame. Good point though I didnt even think about that. But I am also the "ignorant bidder" from your "ebay joke" thread, when I won that bike for $511.. The bike did come with Profile box cranks , silver square corner tuf neck in good condition, blue and silver bullseyes laced to silver arayas 7xs in great shape. Turned around and sold the frame , headset and fork for $275. And kept the parts for $236..Not bad for an ignorant bidder. So are you out to bash me and then buy my forks or is this just irony.

Dang, guess i'll be buying a Ripper w/landing gear and then I'll have a frame I don't need! Ya, you know, good economics buying that frame and fork combo when you don't need the frame!

Mushkow.
I think you misread something in the thread you mentioned. It was the talk of the Schwinn board (I didn't start it there though) before I posted comments on it here.
I pulled a quote of mine from the Schwinn board.
My response to the first posts in that thread....
quote:
A REAL GENUINE, Paramount built, Sting sold today for 511 Dollars. It had Profile cranks on it too.
A Chicago Built Sting Comp. just sold for 861.99 with one piece cranks, rat trap pedals and thruster bars. I sold a Sting comp Frame and got like 30 bucks for it!
I used YOUR purchase as an example of a GOOD purchase, vs. the UNHEARD of price of $861.99 for a Sting Comp., which was the topic of stunned Schwinn guys.
So I think some signals got crossed there. Unless you are the guy that paid $861.99 for a Sting Comp.. Then I still think that is nuts. But the real stink to me there, is the whole Sting, and Sting Comp. deal. Too many people knowingly bend the truth and call "Comps"., "Stings", for more money.
But you are correct. I should not have even posted that other thread. But it was already in full bloom at the Schwinn site at the time, and so I did. It is kind of a dick head thing to do, but I figured anyone paying that much for a Comp. was probably not a member of the VBMX community. But that doesn't make it right either.
As for splitting up sets in auctions, and using the same pics. I stand by my statement that "I think that is unwise marketing" for the reason(s) stated.
I would never bash anyone for paying $511 dollars for a Sting, with Profiles, and Bullseyes, on it. I probably should have held my tounge on the $861.99 price for a Comp., But I didn't.
My apologies for that. Especially, if you thought you were the one being called crazy, in error.
I don't see the thread here anymore, but here is a link to the other one if you are interested.

A quick follow up.
I found it. It is still an active thread here.
http://www.vintagebmx.com/cgi-bin/ultimate...t=022498#000000You got a good deal. IMO someone else did not.
I certainly don't "have it in for you".
Again, my apologies for the miscomunication there.
You are free to take a shot back at me on splitting frame/fork auctions. But I don't think I earned the other pounce....

Thanks Ted Carl for clearing that up for me. Seeing the whole post from schwinn paints a much clearer picture for me. And your comment about the way to market a split up frame and fork.Made alot of sense to me. I have more experience buying than selling. I really appreciate the time you put into explaining yourself. You seem like a stand up guy. thanks Mitch Ushkow
