1977 Schwinn Scrambler Competition Model

These were the first Schwinn BMX bikes with a diamond shaped frame and rear facing dropouts. This was the top model for that early era (1976-1978) that was later replaced by The Sting.

My very first real race bike was the 1976 model of this bike. This thing is box stock and exactly how mine looked when I brought it home from the local Schwinn shop in 1976. I picked this up an eBay a few years ago and it has sat untouched in the basement ever since (and obviously for the last 25+ years before that). I still have my original bike from 1976 sitting downstairs and one day I'll probably restore that one to the way it was when I raced it the most.

I have a 1977 frame just like that- however, my bike doesnt have mounts for a chainguard. I have been trying to figure this out. The ads for the bike show no guard mounts, but some floor models obviously have them. I have seen small black rings on the sprocket as a factory issued guard and now these "tornado" style guards. Whats the deal? which ones had'em and which didnt have mounts brazed to the frame? I am building my Scrambler Comp as a "special" with 3 piece cranks, alloys,Redline forks and V bars. here's another near stock version and some ads to go with your cool bike!

I just wanted to point out that these frames were NOT "Electrofused"-a style of machine welding using insane amounts of current to melt the tubes together-like all other Schwinns(except PAramount high end bikes). These Comp Scramblers were special!-They were hand fillet brazed and left natural...I think the fillet brazed welds are cool!

Was wondering, are those s-7 rims or s-2 wider style knurled Schwinn rims?
Curt
Mr. Pliska, exactly how many pristine 70s rides do you have? (If this is common knowledge please forgive my ignorance).

As for the bike, I dreamed of that bike as a replacement for my Sting Ray, that is until I saw and/or heard what Skip Hess and Linn Kasten were doing over in Chatsworth and Northridge respectively.

Cool Stuff!

As far as I can tell, all of the early complete bikes (1976 - mid 1977) had the full sized chainguards and chainguard mounts. I have two of the prototype frames (from 1975) as well and they have no tabs on them at all. I didn't start seeing the bolt on sprocket guard until late 1977 if memory serves. From the early ads that I have(though I can't confirm this) it always appeared that the frame only kit didn't have tabs on it.

All of my Stingray style Scramblers and Comp Scramblers have the wide S-2 knurled hoops.

Off the top of my head I can count about 15 Schwinns of this era hanging downstairs. Since I got back into collecting these things in 1998, I have gone through 350-400 different (and very cool) bikes.

Right now I have over 100 decent bikes but that includes at least a dozen modern state of the art race bikes (Road, MTB, BMX, etc.) that I currently race on.

Well that explains a the seemingly neverending supply. Keep up the good work and thanks for the info.

From memory the 1977-78 Competition Scrambler (pre Sting tri-oval) was the race version since it was all chrome-moly tubing...the basic Scrambler was the entry level carbon steel model and Heavyyyy.
