hi there.....this morning i didnt even have bmx's in my mind, or even in my memorys really.......but a funny thing happened...
im a dad nowadays, and bmx's [for me] were a thing of old, however this morning i took my son [3yrs old] for a ride on his bike on the ind-est [nice wide expance of tarmac with zero traffic at weekends] well he's getting pretty fast on it now, and stabilizers or not i felt it time to get him a crash-hat.
so off we go to 'halfords' [a uk motorfactors that sell bikes n stuff] and get him sized-up for a helmet...then i spot the bmx's in the cycle racks and think to myself "hmmm i seem to remember them being far more exciting-looking as a kid"
then i got to thinking about my old rally mag burner [or something similar sounding] that i had at age 9 [like 25 yrs ago sheesh] hehehe and i was daydreaming about my then wish-list... gt performer......haro freestyler..... mongooses......and baretrap pedals and potsmod [spell] tough-2's and all the other phrases and trick parts we all used to dream about.....
well, i figured its time i got myself a bicyle after all these years [so i can keep up with my now fast n furious son] and what better than a bmx to have a go at freestyle again [allbeit in an older/more mature/less brave way then i used to 25 yrs ago]
now im feelin real old heheh but im fit enough to get away with it [do lots of motorbike racing]....
anyways... i though i'd have a quick look through the web and stumbled on this site, and wow does it bring back memorys
i have to admit to having lost-touch with all things bmx since the mid 80's so i dare say there will be millions of questions from me
great site you guys have here btw, and hope theres room for an old-timer like me to join in

WELCOME BACK!
slugger
thanx..... a couple of Q's to keep me going....
whats nos? in my world its nitrous oxide heheh but i have a feeling its something to do with old school authenticity?
also.....i really like the old trick frames from the 80's.. could i get an old say..... haro frame and build it with new/modern parts? are the crank-casing and stem sizing still the same size nowadays as back in the 80's? or is this a bad idea?
should i just get a good quality modern bmx?
is there such a thing?
and whats it called nowadays? hehehe
thanks guys

Welcome to the site Slugger.

You'll be able to find an old Haro, just check the for sale section, or post a want ad. Be careful what you buy and do your research first. As for building one up with new parts, a lot has changed, but depending on what you pick for parts, it can be done on an old frame. Today they use threadless forks and smaller bottom brackets as just some of the differences between old and new. Also beware, it can get expensive buying and building old Haros.
G-Flash
1) new olds stock ( never used or mounted )
2) On the left you will see a bunch of sponsors to this site! You can find what you need there and on e-bay for the vintage stuff! things have changed some the biggest are: 1 and an 8th size headsets are the new trend along with threadless forks. Goodluck and happy hunting!

Well....Maybe not such a good analogy this weekend?

Enjoy.

There is a for sale section here as well as the infamous eBay. Wait til you type in Old School Bmx into an eBay search.

Now that you know what NOS is. I'll add one more to your crash training program to make the reading more understandable. BITD.......Back In The day......

Have fun!

Welcome....cheers
slugger
wow thanx guys for the great welcome

i have even more questions now

there was....... b.i.t.d. a freestyle hero of mine who did some 'off the rikter [is that old school enough] tricks....... he was real short and his team colours were yellow..... [i think he rode a curtis freestyler or at least something that looked similar]. the guy was also foreign [darker skin] .... its bugging me now ....might have been 'eddy' someone and from probably 1982 [ish]

forks.... if their not threaded now, how do you clamp-up your stem to the right torque ?
and
are there modern frames/bikes that have a bit of creativity in the frame-design? i love the old twin top tubes and moreso to single-going-into2-before the seat post ala gt pro ferformer etc
Max_Misawa
I got an old bike and i found out that my local bike shop dont have too many parts for this thing
first thing i bought was a diffrent sproket
but it didnt fit
lucky me my neighbor is a machinist
i dunno about you but i like making my own parts
or just making cheap parts work
hahaha

Welcome from down under slugger. I know your gonna love it here. it's pretty cool.
I think the hero of yours is/was Eddie Fiola maybe?
He's on here too. Most of the pros from bitd are on here. You'll see them post a bit. It's very cool isn't it?

Welcome, I too am new to the board and just renewed my interest in Freestyle. (A word rarely used anymore... I will single handedly bring it back)

Do a lot of reading and you will learn so much in a short time here. Great folks too. I am buying a bike from a regular on here this weekend. I am 34 and I am already losing sleep awaiting this purchase. Some things do not change... like riding a bike!
slugger
eddie fiola, thats the one......wow.. does he still ride/stunt
anyhoo....i couldn't resist the urge, so project old school frame with modern tackle will have to wait coz i went and bought myself [now dont flame me too badly coz its not old-school]
a mongoose villain pro.....seems a fairly robust piece of kit for the money, and has a host of half-descent components as standard [im sure you all know the spec, but what the hay]

im looking at it in disgust at the mo coz its got health n safety overload [stickers/reflectors/plastic chain guard etc] which will all be coming off in about 10 mins
and its not exactly pro-settup [cables/angles etc] so i'll stip the thing right down and re-build using racing grease/graphite lube etc [that i have for motorcyle racing] and basically set-up/adjust the whole thing to suit me.
its like being 10 yrs old all over again
this site and you guys are a bad influence on me already!!!!!

good work, keep it up
