I was just digging through my old BMX Mags from the
early 80's I'm on a quest to restore my
1981 Patterson Long. And it occured to me
That Brent Patterson was all over the place back then.
I stoped racing in about 1985 and lost all contact with
BMX until a few weeks ago.
What ever happened to Brent Patterson and
Patterson Racing Products?
I'm actually in San Jose not far from Hayward where
Patterson Was. Are they still there?
Does anyone know where all of the Patterson
stuff when they closed up shop?
I'm also looking for Stickers for my Patterson Long.
I had it re- Chromed (looks awsome !!)
But I need stickers for it now.
It had the Red 'western style' Patterson on the bottom tube, And the Yellow and Red 'PR' logo on the head tube.
Good looking Reprints would be fine.
I've also considered just leaving it bare.
My Tange TRX Forks and MCS Wingbars are at the
Chrome Place now.
Superior Chrome of San Jose does good work yall.
let me know on those stickers.

Brent and Brian run the fire protection service company founded by their father, Vance. You can easily find them in the local phone book in Hayward.
NOS decals can be a tough find -- good luck.

I believe GT had something to do with Patterson going away. At one point GT was making frames for a lot of different companies and Patterson happen to one of those companies. GT aquired Robinson, Powerlite, Auburn and some others. Patterson chose not to be one of those companies. That's why they still own their name and Pacific doesn't.

GT did weld some latter frames. I think the mid or late 1980's lull happened to Patterson. Brent and Brian retired, freestyle was getting big, bmx racing really almost died then. Lots of companies bailed. Boss endured thru the 1990's a while though. Red Line, SE, Diamond Back, there are only a few left, although they have all gone through changes.

Patterson was and is better than any Hutch, there I said it. '83 Brian had caught up with Brent's size being a few years younger, Richie with the Skyway graphites, not the biggest team, but an awesome trio, and the best brother combo in the sport to date. Only thing I'm not sure about was those funky Meno Helmets!

When I first moved to California in early 86 (after the Patterson was officially done), they had racks of un-stickered Pattersons collecting dust at GT. I wonder what ever happened to those?

I think Patterson was always more of a way to fund Brent and Brians racing, than a brand setting out to take over the world. Brent retired in 85 or so and went to work full time for AAA, Brian quit racing the first time in 88 or so and did the same. After Brian quit they called their friends and told them to come get what they wanted. I don't think there was much left, a few frames, mostly small stuff. What we did with the sticker sets(about 200 or so sets) that John Crews got seemed funny in 1989, sickening in 2006. I can personally attest to the fact that Patterson stickers work quite well to tape off screen printing frames. And I think quite a few bikes went out of Bicycles Plus in Folsom(Johns shop) the first year with a free set of Patterson pads. OOPs.
Brian raced ABA Masters/Vet for the first few years in the early-mid 90s. Today Brent is Pres, Brian is VP of AAA Restaurant Fire Control. Rocky might be able to correct me a little but I think that's pretty accurate.

Randy,
That's a pretty good synopsis of how it went down. I retired in 85 and Brent wasn't to far behind. I think Vance really wasn't sure what to do with the company after Brent and Brian hung it up. I remember taking a call at the office with Vance standing over me telling me what to say. It was like he still wanted it to go on, but wasn't sure how to promote it, since the names sakes had retired. I know AAA Fire was doing quite well at the time and I believe it was easier to grow and expand that company than to take the chance on the dying BMX industry.

Thanks for providing that information. I've always wondered what happened to Patterson, and the Pattersons.
The Patterson bikes were really rare down here in New Zealand, in fact, so rare, I never saw one in real life. I have yet to do so.

Well Mike - you know I probably have the only Patterson in NZ- yet to be built...
Interesting stuff.
Yes, Brian and Brent were the main guys at PRP (obviously a way to fund their racing).
John Crews and Ritchie Anderson of course were awesome teammates.
For such a small team and company they had a massive profile.
Definitely one of the coolest BITD.

Wow,
Looks like some of you know quite a bit about Patterson. Norcal74 seems to have worked for
Patterson.
Does anyone have contact with the Pattersons now?
Where did the original sticker artwork go ?
Is Brent Patterson a Member of this Forum?
I've always loved my Patterson.
It's a really great Frame.
Looks really great Chrome !!!
Thanks all for the info,

Andy, you're supposed to be on your honeymoon. I'm sure your wife thinks that its great that you're hanging out in sleazy internet cafes getting your Vintage fix...LOL
BTW, your's maybe isn't the only Patterson in NZ. I have it on good authority, that there was a guy in the Wellington region, who had a Patterson 20 and 24 in the mid to late eighties.... I was talking to someone who knew him back then

Towne , I think some of those unstickered Pattersons were sold by GT as Dynos. That is the legend, and somebody confirmed it on here, I think it was Gary Turner himself. Also, Boss made a frame in 1982 that looked just like a Patterson, and it's very hard to tell Patterson cruisers from Boss cruisers.

I never had a boss from bitd. I just know they exist, There's a picture of Cheri Elliott somewhere on one and Darren Chan has had a few. I think they had clear decals with blue and yellow. They were just like the chrome 1982 Patterson, long and low. But, the seat tube went way up high past the top tube, like 4-6 inches or something. Maybe the decals were foil who knows.

Here's the shop website, there's some other pictures on the contact page.
