Anyone else think this might be a supergoose?

I won't be upset if it's only a mongoose, because to be honest, I bought it thinking it was a mongoose, and only a few minutes ago did I start wondering if it might be a super.. here are the reasons why I think it might be, and the reasons maybe not:

Why it might be:

[*]The decals have the black background and gold letters like Supergeese
[*]The rear seat-stay decals are yellow
[*]The regular mongoose decals that are black background/gold letters are only on the newer style dropout frames, this one is older
[*]the drive train and gold stem look "super" as opposed to just regular goose
Why it might not be:

[*]He says it's chrome, but the finish looks a little dull to me
[*]The top tube decal looks to be placed too far back, maybe a replacement decal..
PS: I'm hoping the back tire is a Cycle pro snakebelly!

      Whaddaya think?

      Also, just noticed this..
is this a "Shimano Equipped" decal on the rear chainstay?

Astrodamus
looks like it might be one of these (except maybe "SX" since the pedals are SX)

Not a Goose guy, but I think it's a Mongoose. If memory serves correctly all Supergoose were Chrome, that looks like Nickel??
MNW
Astro,

When I got mine it looked dull too. Turns out it was 15-20 years (Iguess) of dust and dirt and grit on the chrome. That one looks pretty clean but it's tough to tell from pics. The gusset and the rear drop outs look exactly like mine.

I guess I'll find out when it arrives..

thanks for the input fellas.

A little too close to call without better pics. I have two super gooses in the box. both say chrome on the box , but are actualy nickel.
Astrodamus
Yeah I forgot about that.. I think Sk8bones had a nickel one too..
retrodave
I do have a chrome goose too. not a super though.
Like I said. Hard to tell by the pics.
forman
looks nickel ,, alot of good parts ,to bad the photos suck,,
Randy
s/n tells all and ends any guessing & speculation.
COASTY
Oh and Astro, I had a million of those shimano stickers here. I have one on my supergoose. I put it on there too. The stickers look all wrong as in placement.
As Randy has said, s/n will tell all.
mongooseflash
thats a mongoose not a super -goose
Sknight88
Well Im not the Goose expert here, but I do also have a 81 nickel Super, and the easiest way to tell is if it has the flat spot on the inside of the chain rear stay. I dont see how any one can positivly say yes or no otherwise. Enjoy her, Shawn
Astrodamus
mongooseflash, how can you tell?
sk8bones
Cuz if it was a Supergoose it would look like this.
Wait, on second though it could be a Supergoose.
Motomag
Randy is right. Serial number will tell you. Also look for the flattened chainstay.

I appreciate the info fellas. I know exactly what to look for when I have it in my hands. I will know within 3 seconds of opening the box whether it is a super or not. I was asking opinions based on the pics I have to work with.

It's really not that big of a deal, because like I said, I thought it was a good deal even if it was only a mongoose. I thought it might be fun to elicit some responses based on the photographs only.

So, I'll know here in a little bit.
Serial number "usually" will tell the story, but in some cases there are other things you have to look for. An early 81 will have the older drop-outs and will have a SN that starts with D1 for example (if it's an April of 81) but it will have the flattened seat-stay. So in that case, the SN did not "tell the story" since it didn't start with TC.

I think some people got confused and thought my post was asking how in the world one can tell the difference between a mongoose and a supergoose when you're holding the frame in your hand. And when I asked mongooseflash how he could tell it was a regular mongoose, that was more of a rhetorical question, since it is impossible to state as a fact what the bike actually is until you see it up close and examine it. Based on those pics, it could be either.

Hope that clears it up!

going back to the decal colour point
was the factory spec
regular goose black font yellow background
super gold font and black back ground

cos in the museums 79 - 80 catalogue it
has regular goose decals in both options

so was the gold font and black back ground an
"optional" style for replacement stickers only then ?
