Unbelievable. I ran down to the basement the other night to look for a red Comp III and under it was a blue Mitsuboshi Silver Star Comp II. I must have pulled it off my Hutch about 5 years ago when I first got back into BMX because it was filthy and used I didn't know how rare it was. Rather than throw it out, I stuck it in a box in the basement for sentimental value. The tire and the Hutch had literally sat in a barn collecting diesel exhaust, dust, and oil for atleast 10 years because I donated it to a cousin back in the late 1980's who wanted a 4 wheeler not a bike. After I rescued the Hutch from the barn, I immediately pulled off the tires and bought some NOS Comp III's as replacements (can't have tires that have ever been ridden, oh no).
When I pulled the Comp II from the box the other night the rubber was sticky and crud colored but I noticed it wasn't brittle or rotting. In fact, it felt pretty flexible and the skin wall wasn't frayed so I cleaned it up in the sink with a brush. The more I scrubbed (carefully) the better the blue tread began to look. The gunk and crud came off and the skin wall looks spectacular.
I just installed it on the rear blue Tuff II of a PK and I'm very psyched. Sure the tire is used and sure it's a little more teal than the original blue, but what a score for the money (totally free). I should go look through more boxes. Maybe I put the Aerospeeds in a box too ... no wait, I rode 1-piece takagi's.
