What were the finest one piece cranks BITD?I'm looking for a light set(?) of 180's to go on a 82 cruiser..Any ideas?
motomags
Thun or Takagi would be a good choice.

Takagi
BumpyTrumpet
They used to come factory on Hutch's

GT made a crazy beefed up pair of one piece back in the day.

takagi

SR Tubulars (turbox) are my favorite. Not quite as strong as Takagi, but much lighter.
Mike Corvin
Takagi, period. I ran a pair of 180's for 3 years racing cruiser, and I certainly was'nt nice to them. They finally developed a very slight bend in the center section from jumping w/ the same foot forward all the time, but it took years.
Absolutely bulletproof.

Thun or Astabula (sp?)
madturk
Sugino.

The pin that goes into the sprocket always snapped off on Thun cranks. Takagi is in a class by itself, followed by sugino.
pk ripped
Takagi was all I rode from 1979 till my first Flites in 1985. They rule.

Yep, Takagi 1 piece are the only cranks I haven't bent yet. Including my flights.

I snapped an arm clean off a set of Takagis BITD.

That said, Takagis are a perfect choice.

Alternatives would be Suginos.

Later options are SR Turbox (very cool).

Thuns (pronounced 'tune') are cool to but try to find 'em...

Also Ultramax - those would be cool.

i owned a set of ultramax,,,,got them thru a ex robinson guy that did not like them,,,,,i never broke them but i had bikkes i took to the the parks and bikes i raced,,,,,,,those cranks were put into my hands in 82........the finish and build quality were something else,,,,,,,,,but yea i ran 181 suginos,,,and then flites,,,,,,,,,,i would love to see a pair of exisiting ultramax cranks,,,,,,,,it was the weirdest thing to hold in your hands.........jeff perscales (sp?) factory robinson ,,i think his dad made them,,,,,,,any info ?

Thanks for all the advice..I remember reading about the ultramax, but haven't seen any for sale.Likewise with Thuns...It sounds like Takagi's would be the way to go...
Are they much heavier than flights?I always thought flights would be a lot lighter than they are..
EMilner
Ultramax cranks were 120 bucks and Thun was like around 30. I had a pair of really light one pice arms but could never find any markings on them to tell who made them.
Kurt.
A Takagi crank weighs about 2 lbs (without chainwheel).

A good tubular cromoly 1 piece crank (i've got Tioga max-Flo) weighs basically 1 1/2 lbs. Don't know about the weight of a set of flights.

Well, let's see. There's Takagi. After that, I'd go with Takagi. If I exhausted all resources, I'd probably resort to a set of cranks made by Takagi...but only as a last resort.

TAKAGI! I had a set that NEVER bent or got tweaked, and I was really hard on them, broke my forks before anything else failed. I broke a set of SR Turbox's, the pin that nested into the spider busted off.
meatpie
I like SR tubular's only because they are the only 1-piece cranks that i have....... other than 9 sets of Takagi's...... And i run them on my Floval
mcam
I liked Sugino. I ran them on my 20 and 24 bitd. One thing I never see, is 180mm Sugino one piece cranks. I'd be real keen on a set.

All I ever seem to find is 175mm

Another for Takagi ... I'm still riding my 180's I've had since ... about 1985.

By the way Corvin - make sure you tell everyone how much you weighed when you tweaked those 180's on your cruiser!!!
